"Dancing with the Stars"
Doesn't this show start tonight? I'm surprised I don't see anyone discussing it.

I think it'll be fun. I admit that I've seen ballroom dancing on PBS with Juliet Prowse as a commentator.

It should be campy and fun.

I think it'll be fun, too! I'm summarizing the first episode and depending upon how it goes (and whether or not anyone will actual read it), I might summarize each episode - at least I know I'll have one reader!

If I were a 'star', this would be the ONLY reality show I'd do (unless they had a celebrity TAR edition) - I'm not trained in ballroom dancing, but I'm trained in just about every other form of dance imaginable. I've always enjoyed watching ballroom dance competitions - I think this show will be lots of fun!

I must admit, I already have a favorite: Evander Holyfield.

I have no reasonable explanation for this pick, but I want to
root for his dance duo and boo Rachel Hunter. I don't like her,
and I think it's because she's such a DAW "celebrity". Isn't
this her third reality show?

I also like John O'Hurley. He's already got the built-in cheese factor.

I am an amateur ballroom dancer and these couples are atrocious! While the professional dancers are pulling the weight, their partners are struggling to keep up, with hardly any frame or connection at all. These "dancers" are getting thrown around the floor and and need much more work before they should be seen on television! I'm sorry, but to have these kinds of dancers on television is an embarrassment to the ballroom community. I've seen 15 year old kids dance ten times better than them!!! To all who are watching this show: if you want to see some REAL dancing, tune in to the Ohio Star Ball championships that will be on TV in the fall (hopefully at this point, the world can see what real dancing is supposed to look like!). Don't be fooled...

Best,
Mriss

while we defintely do bash reality daw's here, the whole point of the show is that these stars can't dance. They're learning how to dance so I expect them to be awful and that's part of the fun of watching the show.

They'll get better over time but I dont expect any of them to turn into Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers

I had no intention of watching this show at all...I was annoyed at the promos during Lost.

That being said, I put the TV on to wait for the repeat of the pilot of Lost and surf the web while DH is out for awhile.

I kept watching this show! The guy from Seinfeld was trying so hard yet still looked stiff! I still like him the best so far!

The whole show has a telethon vibe to it...just missing Jerry Lewis.

The biggest irony is that I called Rachel Hunter a DAW, until
I found out that Trista "15 Minutes" Sutter was a "celebrity"
on this show! She out-DAWs Rachel by a landslide.

I thought Trista did the best, overall. The judges seemed
to favor the male celebrities more, and the worst for me
was seeing Tom Bergeron.

I kept waiting for the America's Funniest Videos reference,
and he didn't disappoint me. Geez. Either that or make
a Whoopi Goldberg/center square comment. I don't like Tom.
I don't know why.

I have to give the celebs credit. It took guts to do this.

I thought Trista did very well but I think her scores suffered beecause her routine was too easy wheras some of the others were more difficult though with more mistakes.

J. Peterman was my fav too.

I actually dragged Mr. B into watching this with me. He was so disgusted by the arrogance of Trista's partner. His favorite moment of the show was when the female judge criticized him for throwing Trista around.

So, anyone surprised that Trista wore pink?

OMH, we stumbled on this last night and ended up watching the whole thing. What a pile of nacho-flavoured spray-cheese!

1. Tom Bergeron? Sucks rocks. Could you be any more stiff and boring?

2. Celebrities? Um. Maybe in some alternate universe.

3. Dancing partners? How very odd-looking most of them are. And what about Trista's partner's penis ponytail. WTF is that? He could put her eye out!

4. Running tally: Who is sleeping with their dance partner? My money is on Joey (who, IMO, did the best job), Evander, and maybe, just MAYBE the nauseated soap-opera girl.

That is all.

But you know I'll be tuning in next week to point and laugh.

Guilty pleasure indeed. I was afraid the cast would take this too seriously, glad they didn't. Wasn't expecting a "ballroom dance" program, glad it wasn't. I was expecting light summer fluff, with plenty of fodder for snarked postings...glad it delivered.

Nothing better to do, so checked it out. I can see this getting old REAL fast. I hope the guys stay in the longest, just for amusement and to keep it interesting.

My Fave - J. Peterman. Funny remarks and I just loved him on Seinfeld. Hope he stays for a while. I also thought Evander was hilarious, especially with the faces he made while dancing. Worst dancer, best entertainment. Joey was just eye candy, shaking that thang.

Trista GO HOME to Ryan. She's been on my nerves since the wedding. I think Ryan fell in love with Trista and Trista is just in love with herself and the limelight. Basically, the women all take themselves way too seriously and they can all go home.

22. "My thoughts"
First, the show wasn't formatted how I thought it would be. I thought most of the show would be footage of them learning the dances and that the actual dancing would only take up like the last 20 minutes of the show. It's better the way they did it because you barely have to hear these DAW's talk and whine at all. I like that the dancing is the majority of the show.

Second, I can't believe that the soap opera girl is in last place! I thought they did a really good job. Much, much better than Evander Holyfield who barely even moved and just let his partner twirl around him and basically do the whole dance by herself while he just stood there.

My favorite was the Seinfeld guy, followed closely by the New Kid. I didn't think Rachel Hunter or Trista were very good at all. (BTW- Trista looks horrid as a brunette. She should go back to blonde asap.) Evander Holyfield sucked.

Thats my $.02. I'll be watching next week.

She nice, the Syren.
Did anyone actually vote? I didn't. I would have voted for the soap opera chick though, because I think the judges were wrong about them.

It's going ot be interesting to summarize this thing, that's for sure!

I actually rather enjoyed it - they were MUCH better than I anticipated (they weren't good, but they weren't nearly as bad as I anticipated - except for the soap opera chick who was absolutely TERRIBLE) and I enjoyed the judges and their honesty. The booing audience is gonna get old, though.

I think the best overall dancers were John O'Hurley & Joey McIntyre. John and Charlotte were definitely my favorites, though. He was very impressive after just a short time and those two worked very well together. I think the guys (overall) did a much better job than the gals (celeb-wise). Evander was just cute up there and you could tell he was enjoying himself even though he looked like he was trying too hard. It was still cute.

I don't want to take away from my eventual summary by saying too much, but I actually thought the show was fun...I was wondering when on earth we were going to get a dance reality show (not exactly what I had in mind...really looking forward to the one on FOX in July).

I didn't even know about this show and was flipping around last night trying to find something to watch when I came across it. I missed the first half, and I came in right when they were showing Evander Holyfield during his practice session. Then I saw he and his partner do their dance number. I actually enjoyed their performance quite a bit. I agree that he didn't do much but stay out of her way, but he looked delicious in his dance clothes, very sexy. Liked how he grooved with the music. It was fun to watch them dance together.

I also really liked the J Peterman guy, but thought he looked a little stiff. I think as time goes on, he will loosen up. He has a great presence, very charming.

Trista - eh. If she has disk problems, maybe this show isn't a good idea. And I agreed with the judge who dissed them for the "Hansel and Gretel" walk off - lol.

I also liked the judges - they seemed to be giving real opinions. I liked that they also did not turn to respond to the booing. I loved Tom Bergeron from years ago, on FX when he was co-host of a morning show (with Laurie someone). So I still have a soft spot for him, although the patter gets a little annoying.

27. "Dancing with the Stars was a ratings hit!"
LAST EDITED ON 06-02-05 AT 12:29 PM (EST)

I'll be writing a news story about the ratings this afternoon, but just a quick note that according to last night's preliminary ratings, Dancing with the Stars is a summer hit.

The show averaged about 13.2 million viewers during its hour, easily winning its time period (although I wonder how many of those folks initially thought they were tuning in for Lost?)

Regardless of how they came to be watching the show, it also added over a million viewers from its first half-hour to its second, meaning that (unlike something like Britney's show) people liked what they saw -- and told their friends.

Unsurprisingly, the show didn't do as well among men (it placed 2nd in Men 18-34 and 3rd in Men 18-49) but it dominated the women's side of those demos so much that it easily won the overall Adults 18-34 and Adults 18-49 demos.

NBC's one-time Eagles special finished 2nd in viewers (about 9.5 million) meaning that, combined with the strong build over the hour, Dancing with the Stars might do be better next week.

If next week does another 13-14 million, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that ABC is planning another 6-week "Dancing" edition for later in the summer -- even with the 5-week training time, they could easily get a second edition on the air by late July/early August and still have it end before the Fall premieres.

PS Yes, I watched it -- and found it surprisingly enjoyable. I thought some of the initial live camera work was kinda weak (maybe it was just my TV, but the spotlight lighting seemed to be washing out the dancers at some times) but I think that (assuming the dance order wasn't random) the producers did an excellent job in starting with Joey and his partner. Unlike some of the later pre-dance segments, theirs came across as very light, airy and fun, setting a great mood for the show.

How about the rest of the cast of Seinfeld? This show could end their second series curse! I'd love to see Michael Richards dance and this would be another chance for Julia to show off her patented Elaine moves. Jerry might actually look pretty romantic in a tux doing a waltz. Jason's appeared in musical comedies on Broadway, so he might actually be a good dancer. If you include some guest stars, Teri Hatcher could bring back her gorgeous twosome.

That's actually not a bad idea. They could have the casts of show's (past and present) compete, like the casts of Friend's, Frasier, ER, Everybody Loves Raymond, CSI, etc. I'd watch that!! It almost reminds me of that show "Circus of the Stars", that was good stuff.

I think that it would be great to bring back some of the casts of classic shows like these. In the heyday of "Pyramid" and "Password" the then current TV stars were always on. Carol Burnett and Elizabeth Montgomery were Password regulars. I think "Circus" also had the current stars. More recently, when Regis hosted "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" he had Kevin Bacon, Ben Stiller and Queen Latifah. So if a show gets hot enough, there is a cachet in doing it. Of course, the dancing does require weeks of work but they all have long hiatuses (and for the cancelled shows- endless ones - LOL) But celebrities like John Travolta (whose wife, Kelly, was on Fear Factor- the only episode I've ever watched) Richard Gere and Uma Thurman are already good dancers, so they'd have a leg up.

I stumbled across this show last night by accident, and I couldn't turn away from it. I thought Joey and his partner were gonna get it on right there on the dance floor. Tom calling her a groupie was classic! Even tho I can't stand him. The next funny joke he tells will be his first. I'm rooting for Mr. Peterman and Ivana or whateverthehellhernameis. I'll be watching next week.

I have two questions:
Did anyone catch whether there's actually a prize (other than the honor of being the best ballroom dancer in this group) for winning? I rewatched the beginning and nothing was mentioned. Usually, on the type of show, people play for their favorite charity (or half goes to it).
I thought that Trista and her partner got ahead of themselves and finished their routine before the music ended. That's why there was that awkward exit walk. This happens sometimes during ice skating routines and the skater tries to pose prettily but you can see how uncomfortable he or she is. Anyone else have a similar take?

I thought John O'Hurley (J.Peterman) was great. He and his partner looked like they were having fun. Rachel Hunter was pretty good, too. Evander also looked good, and I'm looking forward to seeing him improve over the weeks. I'm surprised how graceful he was!

Some of the male professional dancers are SO stuck up and snotty! I feel bad for Kelly because her guy (the "ice king") or whatever she called him, is SO into himself that I'm afraid he'll be mean to her. Trista's partner seems snotty too... "ohh.. I'm the most handsome man in the ballroom. blah blah blah. yada yada yada" sheesh!!! The female dancers seems more down to earth, especially Joey's partner and John's partner.

Joey and John's partners definitely seemed to be having fun with it -- the women's partners... not so much.

I've actually gotten a couple of emails from male dancers upset with the snotty attitude exhibited by the male dancers, they feel it's sterotyping all of them.

They've also pointed out that just like most Hall Of Fame baseball players suck as managers, dance champions don't tend to be the best coaches -- which means that given Joey's partner has a crush on him and I've been told that John's partner does summer programs with kids, that probably gives them a leg up in the patience department (which I would think is important when working with amateurs.)

I watched the show and enjoyed it. But I am left with 2 questions.

1) How do they determine who gets eliminated. We have seen the scores of the judges, but how do they incorporate the votes from the viewers into the overall score?

2) Are these guys competing for a prize? Is it a donation to charity? Or do they get paid a set amount for just appearing on the show?

Does anyone knows the answer to these questions?

Supposedly, the viewers and the judges each determine 50% of each couple's final score.

Although how they get combined remains unclear -- since the viewers aren't voting on a 1-10 point basis, you can't just average the viewer's scores with those of the judges. Instead, the viewers are simply voting for their favorite performer, like American Idol.

The only way to combine them would be something like averaging the couples' overall judging rankings and their overall viewer vote rankings, but with several of the couples getting scores that were the same or very close together, that might not be the fairest system

For example, since threee couples tied for first with 20 points, you would probably have to award all three of them 6 first places points, with the fourth couple getting only 3 points -- something that would make it pretty likely that no matter where they ranked in the viewer's own 1 to 6 point ranking, none of the highest judged couples would be going home... then again, maybe that's the way ABC wants it.

The other option would probably be to have the three first place couples split the 15 points that are would typically be awarded to the first, second and third place rankings, and although fairer, that would still leave each of the couples with 5 points each, still making it extremely unlikely that they would end up at the bottom of any averaged ranking

The official ABC website:
http://www.abc.go.com/primetime/dancing/scoring.html
explains the scoring. SurvivorBlows, you called it in your prediction!
I was surprised to learn that the phone lines were only open for one hour- that seems a really short time when phones get so busy. Maybe they'll extend it since the show was #2 in the ratings nationally!

I watched it too, and will be tuned in tomorrow night to see it again - nice to see something a bit different.

I really liked "J. Peterman" and his partner, they're the only ones I'd bother voting for.

Unless I could vote AGAINST Trista - she didn't look her partner in the eyes even once and it made me crazy. She just kept her eyes on the camera the whole time... blech.
