LAST EDITED ON 07-16-03 AT 10:01 PM (EST)I'm assuming they have "helpers" like Trading Spaces does. TS have a construction assistant and a sewing assistant. Plus, anyone allowed on set gets roped into helping with projects. Since they are known for their work, like Ted and Thom for example, I'm sure they have assistants outside of the show that can help shop for them. The only budget I've seen so far was from the application--$2000 salary for each guy per episode.

I LOVED this show! I finaly saw a rerun of the episode with the gallery opening makeover for Butch. I liked that they didn't try to totally change the guy they were making over, they just enhanced him, and made the most of who he was. And the Fab5 were like a group of Superhero makeover specialists. I loved them all! I can't wait to see more of this show. It was so fun! I agree that the ending where they watch and critique the outcome was wonderful. They were so supportive, and so thrilled at Butch's every success. I really got the feeling that they had changed this Man's life in a really positve way. And wow, the makeover guy looked great when they were done with him! This is a show I can get into. It's funny, and nice. There isn't enough nice lately on TV, this show is refreshing. It is warm and funny and just wonderful! I was sad when the hour was over. Can't wait to see more.

I saw that they were showing them all today. There are only 3 episodes I know of so far and they are re-running them like crazy to get people watching.Did you see the Artist one Cher? I think of the 3 that is my favorite ( I've seen it 3 times now). This show has heart; something I think is missing from the other Reality offerings this summer. Sure it is funny, and plays on the stereotypes of Gay and Straight men, but the 5 seem to love helping people. It is done in such a warm and caring way, that you can't help but smile. I have a huge crush on all the Fab 5 (wish they would take my Hubby out for a makeover.) This is my favorite makeover show since Trading Spaces, and I can't say enough how much I love it. I think everyone should see it, and can't wait for fresh episodes.

Was the artist one the one with the long-hair guy? I saw that one and the one with the Jewish couple. I thought long-haired dude's girlfriend wasn't worth the effort, she seemed manipulative and bitchy. The guy was sweet though. I really had to laugh when he went to pick her up and the Fab Five's reaction cause it was the exact same reaction my friend and I had while watching it: Oh. My. Gawd. The Jewish guy, wow, what a change! He looked so much better, and the furniture was fabulous! Even though his wife didn't like the foie de gras, she seemed really happy. This show does have heart, Buggy, and it's becoming one of my favorites really fast. I mean, hot guys (unattainable as they may be), cooking, decorating, culture and style tips? How cute is the grooming guy? ( the personnal style expert) What a doll! No! Wrong long haired guy ( I liked him, hated his girlfriend)
The Artist Guy is the one you didn't see, and the best episode so far, I think. The guy they make over is an Artist, and they set up a Gallery opening for him ( his first). He has long stringy blond hair and scrubby looking facial hair, clothes are awful ( bad ugly overalls). They totally transform this guy ( his name is Brian, his friends call him Butch). The change in his whole personality is wonderful. Butch gains confidence along with style. And I really liked his Art too. I enjoyed the other two episodes, but this one was my Fav. The viewer was left with a feeling that his Man's entire life was changed by the 5 bringing out the best in him. (yikes! I am still raving over this show. Love it)

Buggy, I can't believe I'm still raving about this show too, but I have to say it is one of the best reality tv concepts ever. And it's not just fluff and junk, these guys are really having a life-changing experience and learning and growing. I guess I can kind of compare it to sex. Most reality shows are like one-night stands that just leave you feeling dirty and empty afterwards. This show is like a good relationship, where you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. AZ Leo, can you believe how open these guys are to change? It is really cool to watch the transformations that aren't just physical. *Hugs* Mon Another Fantabulous IceCat Creation "What the hell, go and put all your eggs in one basket."

I am a gay person and I LOVE THIS SHOW! The way that both the straight guy and the 5 gay guys get along is great and male bond is wonderful. I have noticed a couple of my fellow gays have 'shuddered' or been 'embarrassed' by how some of Fab 5 are over the top (Carson). I think that Carson is my favorite because he is not afraid to act zany, crazy and is comfortable with his own sexuallity that he can be free to be himself. I JUST LOVE HIM.Come on my fellow gay compariots. We gays are like the rainbow flag that we use as a symbol for ourselves. We gay people are all different and varied and I love that about ourselves. We shouldn't be so up-tight and freaked out when some of us act campy. Don't tell me some of you guys haven't had or met a friend like Carson who was comfortable with himself, with his sexuallity and just plain fun. Why are FELLOW GAYS trying to put out-going gays into the closet because they feel 'uncomfortable' with they why they act? Who cares what SOME in the straight society think about us. There are a lot of caring straight people who love us no matter how we act. Also Kyan, Ted and Thom are not 'campy'. So why not mention them. Besides life is to short to be up-tight, self-hating, and judgemental about our more flamboyant members of our community. We already have people who are like that looking at us...the religious right. We gays should not try to conform to their up-tight ideals about us. We should embrace them not treat them like they would. I know I am on my soapbox, LOL, but I love free, outgoing gay people. I for one love Carson. He is sooo crazy and zany and a true DIVA! I LOVE THIS SHOW. They are all warm and caring to their 'client' and it shows that gay and straight men have alot in common and that they can learn form each other and get along. CARSON I LOVE YOU...YOU GO BOI! YOU ARE TRULY THE ONE! YOU HAVE A FAB HUMOR AND YOU CRACK ME UP! ...as for my up-tight gay brethren...please lighten up...we gays are not cookie cutter clones. Remember Kyan, Thom and Ted are also on this show so don't freak out. ;)

Welcome, Foofoodeedoo (I hope I spelled that right) and Gay_Bob! I don't think the series will further the stereotypes of gay men because none of my straight male friends or uptight friends are watching it, nor do they care to. I have gay friends so I know that gay people shouldn't be stereotyped when they are all so different. No brainwashing occuring on my part...I love the Fab 5 and I hope they get paid lots of money for their work. Now, the Family on ABC might encourage some stereotypes about the Italian American family. *laughs* La Métropole

LAST EDITED ON 07-31-03 AT 02:07 PM (EST)QUEER EYE just shows that America can only see gay men as fashion-conscious clowns. I know too many gay professionals to take any of this nonsense seriously, but most of America only knows these stereotypical camp-it-up qualities. Why don't we have a show about black men who rape white women? How about a show with Jews telling us how to pinch-a-penny??!! Yes, those stereotypes are gone after those affected protested. Now, I am protesting. Yes, QUEER EYE is damaging to the view America has of gay men. No we are not all queenie men whose only concerns in the world are fashion and interior design. Why would America even consider granted equal rights to anyone not portrayed as an equal? The absolute worst part of the show is the ending in which the guys watch the straight guy interact with his friends via a TV. Once again, gay men are only allowed to come and fix you up. Then we must leave and not be part of the party. Once again, gay men are skirted to the sidelines, out-of view.

I thought it was kind of bad that they didn't get to hang out at the gallery opening. But then they had the proposal, and it would be quite silly for five men to stand around while a man proposed to his girlfriend. The guys aren't all queenie men concerned with fashion and interior design. The most flaming one is the fashion guy. The rest aren't even queenie, really. Also, this show *IS* about fashion and interior design, so doesn't it make sense to have the gay men who are experts on this? You can read the news articles and the bravo/nbc websites about the show. These men have credentials in their areas of expertise, and were not chosen simply because they are gay. Yes, there are some gay men out there who are into sports and stereotypically straight-guy activities, but that isn't what this show is about. The show isn't about depicting a gay man's lifestyle. It's about fashion and design. I can see your point on this, and I can argue for your view if I choose. But, instead, I've chosen to have fun with the show and just enjoy it. ~ cq

I agree with you, cq. I think there is only one queen on the show--Carson. At the interview process, Ted reports that Carson showed up in hip huggers and a gauzy shirt and proclaimed that it was nice of the company to interview all those other guys that obviously weren't going to get hired. I don't find any of the others queenie at all. I love Ted. Ted is a contributing editor for Esquire and has written several books for men--Things men need to know about food, sex, or clothing. He was picked for his expertise. Carson worked for Ralph Lauren. Thom has his own business. Kyan worked on "What Not To Wear" (another show that has the makeover-ers watching the fashion victim to see if they've learned anything). Jai is an actor. In my redneck of the woods, the straight men and 700 club crowd aren't watching this show. The absolute worst part of the show is the ending in which the guys watch the straight guy interact with his friends via a TV. Once again, gay men are only allowed to come and fix you up. Then we must leave and not be part of the party. Once again, gay men are skirted to the sidelines, out-of view. I believe they took this from "What Not to Wear"--to see if their fashion victim can fly on their own. Of course here in my redneck of the woods, the gay men are the party--but I'm a catering woman. They get more attention and tips than I will ever get. *laughs* La Métropole

Then >we must leave and not >be part of the party. > Once again, gay men >are skirted to the sidelines, >out-of view. LOL, first of all there are already several movies, tv shows and other media that show that gay people are NOT ALL THE SAME. We are a varied group of people. We gay people are not all straight acting, stuff shirts some of our more 'embarrassed' members of our community wish we were. You see one gay person acting queenie on a show and you go on a tirad. He is NOT an ACTOR acting queenie...HE IS WHO HE IS. Why are YOU discriminating against some of our flambouyant members of our community? Should the network only have hired someone who 'ACTS STRIGHT' because some people who are closed minded only want to see someone who THEY can identify with. You can't tell me as a gay person you have not met any Divas or Queens? You would be lying if you said no. Why should they be put in the closet because you want straight society only to see a relection of its self. Do you want to discriminate against our more flambouyant memembers by hiding them away because they might embarrass you? No network should hire them because we don't want to be embarrassed or we are ashamed of them. Then that would be like Jerry Falwell...don't ask don't tell as long as they don't act "Gay" they're OK. I for one am not embarrassed or ashamed of them. I for one love their openess and yes their 'queenie' ways. Who are WE to judge them? WHY DO THEY MAKE YOU UNCOMFORTABLE? Should we gay people all "act" straight? Then you would make it that only the straight acting ones would be accepted while our flambouyant members should be put back in the closet to make straight people comfortable. Maybe then some of our more up-tight members wouldn't be so ashamed to be compared to "them". LOL, That is homophobic...isn't it? You can't tell me that the gay community is not the driving force behind a lot of fashion, style, grooming, and interior decorating industry. This is a show about make overs...who would be better then us to do a show? Since we are a major force in most artistic industries which include those I mentioned. You would have to be deaf, dumb or blind not to see that. As for the so-called "Worst part of the show" that you call it when they watch them do their task by themselves while in their lair. THE WHOLE SHOW IS ABOUT THEM HELPING THEM DO IT FOR THEMSELVES...NOT WALK THEM THROUGH THEIR 'MOMENT'EVERY STEP. If they were there they would be doing everything for him instead of him doing it for himself. They would not have learned to do it themselves like cook the meal, dress themselves and present the house. Besides it would be ridicules for them to there when a guy is proposing to his finance. Like I said "SOME GAY PEOPLE NEED TO LIGHTEN' UP".

As an auto mechanic here in Houston, I am pretty much the opposite of the "Fab 5" in most every way save for one - I'm Queer too.I see nothing demeaning by "Queer Eye...", quite the contrary, I think it is 'high camp' at its best. Behind the fun and camp, something else comes through, five men with a passion for their jobs and a deep seated humanity that most everyone who sees this show appreciates. What better positive image could the Gay community ask for. I can't imagine that too many people who tune into this program come away with the impression " So, that's what all gay men are like!" The majority of folks are just watching a fun show with five likable Gay men who do makeovers (this ain't no PBS documentary). The fact is that camp is part of the Gay community, no matter the degree of masculinity. I'm more offended by Gay men who shun or belittle those they consider too "over the top" or "queenie", (even the most flamboyant American is entitled to equal protection under the law). Queers come in all sizes, shapes, colors, ages, degrees of masculinity and degrees of style (I couldn't decorate my way out of a wet paper bag), and I'm pretty sure that most straight viewers of "Queer Eye" understand that, and are just enjoying a clever twist on reality shows. Long live the Queens!

LAST EDITED ON 08-08-03 AT 07:46 PM (EST)I read (sorry can't remember where) that they don't have a budget, they've actually spent at least 10g on one of the makeovers. I'll try to find a link, but that's what I know so far. ETA: Still haven't found a link, but I also recall the article stated that the Fab Five, although they have a profile of the guy and his situation, don't know what they are dealing with until they show up at the guy's house. Also, the show is taped over 3 days. Mon Another Fantabulous IceCat Creation "What the hell, go and put all your eggs in one basket."

65. "NBC to show full hour on Thursday" |
Looks like everyone will get a chance to see what we (who have Bravo) have been talking about. NBC will show the full Urban Cowboy episode this Thursday. He's a little bit country, she's a little bit rock and roll and he wants to propose. This one was so sweet and loving it almost made me cry (and when was the last time a reality show made you tear up in joy rather than frustration). It will be replacing ER for the week. It will be interesting to see what kind of ratings it gets compared to ER.

66. ""Queer Eye" GMA style & Wife-zilla" |
LAST EDITED ON 08-12-03 AT 12:11 PM (EST)Did anyone else catch Good Morning America's spin on Queer Eye? Aaaargh, how pathetic can you get, even for network tv? GMA's twist was to have a competition between 3 queer guys and 3 straight guys to see who could do a better job of making over this creature in a bad dress (who knew Pep Boys had a clothing line?).! The woman already says she trusts the straight teams judgment (it should be noted that her hubby is on that team), but with such sound judgment its no wonder she looks like ##### Cheney in drag! Off to Bloomingdales they went, on Wednesday we get to see the results of the two teams and America gets to vote! That's right, a makeover is turned over to the people... the same people who think fanny packs and biker shorts on fat folks are acceptable! This surely a sign that civilization as we know it is coming to an end! Edit: me thinks RTW filter is a tad too PC! "####" refers to the VP's first name, not a male body part (though a case can be made that VP is indeed aforementioned body part)

68. "How much it all costs" |
In case you're wondering how much the Fab 5 spend on each episode, Time magazine confirmed what I've been hearing through the grapevine...Zero.Every item of clothing, food, decor and grooming is giving to the show in exchange for the publicity. According to the article, the merchants in exchange for letting the camera crews in and giving away product have seen their sales go through the roof. Remember the pink cashmere jacket last week? Its' few seconds of air time led to a dozen sales of the same item (at $795 a piece)in that store alone. If the Fab 5 pick it up or say they like it, it translates in to gold for the merchant. I imagine some items like paint, etc are of course picked up by the show, but thats just a drop in the bucket. Unofficially, I heard that indeed it only takes a day for the Fab 5 to do their bit with their subject, but an advance team proceeds them to determine what needs to be done and arrange for work crews to come in and put together Thom Felicia's ideas. Makes sense, I don't know any professional decorator that actually does it all his/her self It takes a lot of work in order to be spontaneous!

And alot of work it is...I saw the show last night (back-hair man) and they turned a real dump into a nice place. Same thing with the solo singer. Have you ever seen such a mess as that? I can't imagine that only took one day. The one liners that the five throw out are what make the show for me. Also, I'm kind of surprised to hear about (some) negative backlash in the gay community. I know my perspective is different and all, but I just don't see the branding and typecasting. Each of the five are completely different. What more would you want? Very funny show, and I'm actually learning from it (gasp!). I even trimmed my own eyebrows this morning! LOL but true.

It's great to see you Lion! I think the show makes light of the stereotypes. And I agree the 5 are all very different, just like all types of people are different. Of course not everyone is going to like it. Just from the posts here we can see that some Gay men like the show, and some hate it. Seems to me that makeovers are mostly about making the most of who someone is, and not totally changing them. Can't believe I am still raving about this show, but every week I am struck by the kindness of it, so different from the mean tone most of the Summer shows have had ( your eyebrows look great btw, I am hoping my husband will be more willing to update his haircut)

my sentiments exactly. I think they did a stunning job selecting the Fab 5 because they are all so different. It gives a nice representative sample.

74. "Queer Eye book" |
As reported by AyaK:http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=1639 A spokesperson for Clarkson Potter, the Random House unit that actually won the auction for rights to the book, said that it would contain "edgy yet practical advice" from the Fab Five. Although Clarkson Potter would love to have the book for the lucrative December holiday gift-giving season, it says that the most likely release date for the book is February. Of course, it's possible that a few more of Random House's dollars could change that timetable.... Let's hope so. ARRRRRRR!!!!
