Although I was not much of a poster in the old days, I was a dedicated lurker and felt like I knew y'all.
It's been a long time, but with the new season of Survivor starting, I came back to see what's happening here in RTV-land. It was Survivor that brought me here originally, many many many years ago --- and seems appropriate to check in here again.
OT was always one of my favorite places to visit. Estee, AyaK, Puffy, Breezy, Wheezy, JSlice, DriveMyCar aka Buggy, AnotherKim, Bebo, Zombie, Tummy, Moley, Sagebrush Dan, Pepe, Fooner, Draco, Starshine, Syren, Spanky, Tribe, RudyRules, Wallflower, Dragonflies, Miamicatt, Sahara, Weltek, ARNutz aka Nutzy, Mysticwolf, the By-bros: Byoffer and Bystander, Landru, Sami, Tech, Swami, Gothmog, Dweeze, Ginger, Augie, CanadaGirl and tons of other peeps (including the scary evil clown) and others that I cannot remember their user names but I do recall things about them --
Such as the pooty one from San Francisco (Bravie? or something like that - BrvnKrzy?), the one with the TV shaped siggy and name like Can'tWaittoWatch or MadeToWatch or something like that-- shaving hairy toes, discussions of Cabana Boys, DAW status, crap baskets, zHrelp, kittyloafs, lvoe and pooh, and the guy who always used the yellow bird Woodstock cartoon - (a total diplomatic, peaceful, sweetheart guy I think was from Seattle and maybe his name was Dave?) and the user who's name was something-Mom, but it was a guy who's posts were brilliant. There were discussions of Uterus-shaped pancakes, a glowworms bum, siggy parades and more....
There were very real, deep discussions about depression, racism, sexism, homophobia; dealing with the vicissitudes of life. Kids and parenting, travel and adventure, alcoholism and substance abuse, politics and real world implications, religion and the meaning of life, etc. etc.
When I joined, the voice of OT was definitely more leftie overall but there were amazing in-depth discussions from all viewpoints. If I were to categorize it - I'd say we were a good blend of being socially liberal and fiscally conservative.
As a progressive democrat, I often came here to read and learn from people about political positions contrary to my own. AyaK, PRE, Spanky and others were very helpful to me since I wanted more than soundbites and slogans. And I was able to get insights from smart, caring people who I respected and trusted. I felt it really helped me clarify what my views were and why I believed what I did.
But more than anything, I came to OT to laugh and be amazed at the wit and wisdom of the people here. To this day, everytime I see the hash tag #butfirst on Big Brother, I laugh with fond memories of something that I read here -- I believe it was written by Estee in response to why Julie Chen said "but first" so often. Using the Jeopardy-style fashion for the question/answer format - Answer: "But(t) first" Question: What does Les Moonves says to Julie Chen when they have sex?
I am not sure why I found that so outrageously funny the first time I read it here, but it really has stayed with me and I still chuckle whenever I hear Julie say "but first" even today.
I am grateful for all those fun times here in OT. Thanks to you all that are still here, keeping it alive!
A JSlice of snowshine!
