"Spring Training."
With football over and the PTC eagerly looking to enforce their brand of non-justice on CBS, the local papers have switched their focus to baseball. Both tabloids have the resident teams as their lead stories -- one paper, one team. It's only a week until pitchers and catchers report, so some kind of coverage would be understandable in this slow sports time. And what are our stories today?

The Daily News has a leak from the Alex Rodriguez legal/PR camp. According to this carefully-crafted rumor release, the player in question continues to declare his innocence regarding the latest PED drug charges. Those charges are false. And contrived. And invented. Especially invented. Because he has decided there is a Conspiracy. That's right: someone is out to Get Him by Ruining His Reputation, giving the team a reason to Take His Money Away and cost him any Hall Of Fame induction which he wasn't going to receive anyway, and the reason he wasn't going to get in was? The Conspiracy. So as the paper proudly proclaims, he is now -- Par-A-Roid.

(It would sound a lot more credible if he played for Boston.)

Not to outdone, the Post is focusing on the Queens boys. They're in some financial trouble, as you might have heard. A little Ponzi, a little payroll cut, a whole lot of lawsuits. The team claims not to be making money and a lot of people believe them. As such, they have asked the city if they can place a new building on the CitiField lands. Something which will bring the team a little more income. Something guaranteed to funnel cash into the franchise.

They are asking for their very own casino.

So the count is now Ball 3, Strike 2, and Red 25. Any time this weak offense puts up a snowman, it was automatically a hard eight to begin with and now? It's harder. Want to comp your hot dog? Beers in the stadium are eight dollars for a half-full cup, but wander across the parking lot and liquor up for free all night long! Say, any truth to the rumor I just started about Pete Rose being the next manager? And the slot machine reels come up Playoffs -- Playoffs -- No @#$%ing Way!

*sigh*

Is it fall yet?

Some of you have to be doing better than this.

There's an article devoted to the question of post-NFL season attention.

For now, it's my home basketball team, which dropped its #1 ranking to the unrated Illini a night ago. The Hoosiers are a wicked, although still inconsistent team this season, which pretty much summarizes it for every college basketball team going into March Madness.

Steal! Fast break! Slam dunk! Followed by a boom baby from 3!

Go Hoosiers!

While it's cute that Jason thinks football is now America's Pastime and all, for me it'll be interesting to see what football will become over the next ten years. It may be more "Past Time" than anything.

In the meantime, yes, fortunately baseball is upon us. The workouts in Arizona and Florida, the smell of cut grass (and not rubber), leather, chewing and spitting and antler spray - I say "play ball!"

Here's more here, including a completely empty concession stand and a fan who showed up while wearing a Blue Jays cap in protest:

But thanks to the team's superb skills in dealing with the public, that line is still there today because no one remembered to turn the ticket printer on. Which wasn't much of a problem, because they sold the ticket printer three months ago.

At least they have their daily rain delay to look forward to.

...and right on cue, Teixeira hurt his wrist and has withdrawn from the WBC.

Even more ominous: The same guy who tweeted about Melky Cabrera's failed drug test last year a month before MLB announced the 50-game suspension is now saying that four guys will all be suspended in the near future for failed tests - and three are Yankees; Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and A-Roid with the fourth being Ryan Braun.

Yikes. Sure, the guy isn't some known columnist or anything like that but he's saying his same source from last year is telling him new info, and until this guy has struck out, we shouldn't dismiss anything that he's saying - yet.

ETA: More info here and here.

If Cano is on that list, I will first try not to collapse from laughter, then wait for Boras to open up a new lake of brimstone in his fit of denial, pique, and sudden inability to get $40m a year. Oh, and then I'm going to see if I can find John Sterling. Who's on steroids? It's Robbie Cano, don'tcha know! And then watch as the ultimate Yankee apologist tries to put a positive spin on it which he can later trademark for no bucks whatsoever.

Is it wrong to be looking forward to this? ...yeah, like I care. Bring it on!

As for Braun? Cue millions of deaths from not-surprise.

Let's see. How many of the four would claim there was a giant conspiracy against them and the tainted samples were just a strike from the Master Plan? How about -- all of them?

So not only does Par-A-Roid have something to be paranoid about, but Braun has already restarted his media tour of Not Only Did Those Substances Never Enter My Body, But You Can't Even Prove The Body Is Actually Mine. And the protests get funnier from there.

Can this stick? Possibly: there's always the problem of The Source, but the commissioner's office doesn't quite have to follow trial procedure. (Unfortunately, the commissioner's office doesn't follow anything but the money.) And let's face it: if they're unpaid suspensions, then the Yankees at least might ask for something along the lines of several years...

Fun approaches. Or at least headlines. Lots and lots of pointless, ineffective headlines.

Oh, and appeals. Guaranteed-to-succeed appeals.

Well, the supposedly-behind-the-scenes rumor is that the Yankees would like to use this as an excuse to void A-Roid's contract. Me, I just want to see Braun detoxify back into a guy with warning track power at best.

So for the cost of establishing badwill among the fanbase and losing a good percentage of their competent current employees plus getting the dreks of the future crop, they each get to sign one backup infielder. If they're lucky.

Next up, replacement umpires.

19. "RE: They pick the strangest places to be cheap."
The story is basically correct (except for the headline), but your inference is incorrect.

Owners are not going to eliminate the MLB pension plan. What the majority of owners want to do is move from a defined benefit plan (currently required) to a defined contribution plan. In other words, they'll have to put in a defined amount of money a year.

FWIW, most private pension plans in the US are defined benefit plans. Any employees who want to leave MLB because of this change will have to get government jobs if they want a defined benefit plan, because governments are generally the only employers still offering them. Or. of course, they could go work for a team that continues its DB plan, because some teams are certain to do that.

What will happen, if this proposal passes, is that clubs that choose to offer a defined contribution plan will freeze their current defined benefits plans and then offer a defined contribution plan from the time of the shift going forward.

I understand where you're coming from on this, but I reserve the right to be completely unsurprised when the owners walk out of the meeting room and announce no pensions of any kind for any employee, plus a 30% pay cut. Oh, and the office soda machine now charges concession prices.

Abuse of workforce is how a few of them undoubtedly got to the point of being able to own a team in the first place.

Okay, so there's a scale and relationship issue to this: all El Cheapo Golfer was asked for turned out to be a girlfriend needing a mere two hundred dollars for car repairs, whereas El Cheapo Former Shortstop got hit up for six digits. And A-Roid's case is really more towards what used to be called Danegeld: you never get rid of the Dane. But still -- given how much suspicion was already on him and that he'll probably wind up spending about the same or more on legal fees, some would have thought about it.

Note his change in legal representation. It's not a cry of 'I'm guilty and I need someone who got the other guilty ones off!', but it's very close.

24. "Explanation for Cashman's rant?"
Here's a crazy scenario being thrown out there by the NY Daily News -- it sounds insane, yet completely plausible in the megalomaniac world of A-Fraud.

A brief play-by-play:
- A-Twit tweeted that the doctor gave him the O.K. to play and that he was thrilled at the prospect of getting back onto the field.
- Cashman was in a presser when a reporter told him what A-Twit said. He blew up and said, "You know what? When the Yankees want to announce something, we will. Alex should just shut the f--- up. Thats it. Im going to call Alex now."
- A-Fraud, Cashman and Randy Levine had a conversation for about a half hour yesterday.
- An unnamed source claimed that A-Fraud now suspects that the Yankees are intentionally trying to screw him over to avoid paying the money left on his contract. Cashman denies this is the case.

Now here's an interesting scenario laid out by the News:

A-Fraud tweeted this info because he wants to be able to go down to the minors on a conditioning assignment then claim that he can no longer perform at an acceptable level due to his bad hip, then announce his retirement.

The catch? If he is declared physically unable to perform and retires, he gets all of the money owing to him (a mere $114 million). If he waits until the Yankees decide he's ready, there's the possibility MLB comes down with a lifetime suspension for his repeated involvement in Biogenesis/steroids (or a 100-game suspension) and the Yankees would be off the hook for the contract and A-Fraud gets zippo, zero, nada.

So in that context, it makes sense why Cashman blew up over what A-Fraud said.

Believe it? I don't know. But part of me is hoping it's true as I want to see the soap opera blow up in the Yankees' face. Then again, I don't want to see A-Fraud earn another penny as he's a complete farce by now. *holds both hands palms-up to weigh which scenario is better for a Jays fan*
