I follow Peter Sagal on twitter and he tweeted, he had just finished with the blind friend he was leading and was just past the finish line when it went off. Bad enough to be in that chaos when you can see. He reported that they were fine, but has to be scary to be that close.

I'm waiting for follow-up explosions. The following is not intended as disrespect to the dead and their families: as a terrorist attack, this would be incompetent. If this was deliberate (and I'll leave a tiny chance of gas explosion or the like on the board for now), then those responsible could have conceivably planted bigger charges, timed things to get more people, and wouldn't you place this near the starting line for maximum carnage, setting it off just after the race began? But if you mainly wanted to get police, medical, and fire responders, you'd start with a relatively small charge, get everyone in the area, and then trigger the major explosion. I'm dearly hoping I'm wrong and this is simple incompetence -- or accident. And I'm sure someone else has thought of this -- dozens of them, some on the scene. But until they clear the zone... By the way, do not read any commentary sections on this story. The trolls are out in force and warpainting their faces with innocent blood.

8. "A third explosion?" |
LAST EDITED ON 04-15-13 AT 05:17 PM (EST)BOSTON (AP) — Boston police say there's been a third explosion in the city, following two blasts near the finish line of the Boston Marathon that killed two people and injured many others. Police Commissioner Edward Davis says authorities aren't certain that the explosion at the JFK Library was related to the other blasts, but they're treating them as if they are. David says there are no injuries stemming from the third explosion. He urged people to stay indoors and not congregate in large groups. Update: Two people died and 28 are being treated in hospitals from the first (apparently two) explosions, with reports of another (possibly two) unexploded device(s) found.

An completely unrelated incident could be construed as related, and apparently this is not related, but the facts remain to be seen. The Library is distant from the Boston Marathon scene which was the focus of the bombings and this could well be unrelated. If this was the act of a single person, a JFK Library bombing would seem spurious.

10. "RE: A third explosion?" |
The odds of a single person being responsible are starting to drop. CNN claims the 'JFK Library incident' is 'fire-related', whatever that truly means, but that typically indicates someone wants the media to lean towards coincidence -- whether 'tis or not. The Boston Globe says over one hundred people are injured. Also that the Red Sox have identified the persons responsible and are demanding the immediate arrests of Bobby Valentine and Carl Crawford. (Note that the BoSox played their traditional noon game. Plant a bomb just outside the gates, set off after the last out, and things could have been so much worse.) In the land of the Suspicious Backpack, we now have a field day in progress: many runners carry small ones when they're on the marathon course and most of them dropped the things when they ran for their lives. There are Suspicious Backpacks everywhere. Watch your step. {dark}Well, they're attacking an event which non-citizens always win and the life records of a Democrat in the home of the original tea party on Patriots Day: anyone want to take a guess?{/dark}

This bombing smacks of a domestic lone wolf, like almost all of these in the past, but we'll see, pending more facts. It's almost certain that it's not Al-Queda, or else the results would have been much different.

From CNN:"Investigators warned police to be on the lookout for a "darker-skinned or black male" with a possible foreign accent in connection with the attack, according to a law enforcement advisory obtained by CNN. The man was seen with a black backpack and sweatshirt and was trying to get into a restricted area about five minutes before the first explosion, the lookout notice states. Also, a Saudi national with a leg wound was under guard at a Boston hospital in connection with the bombings, but investigators cannot say he is involved at this time and he is not in custody, a law enforcement official said Monday evening." The later sounds a little too much like a visiting spectator or participant (remember, the marathon draws from all over the world) who had the triple bad luck to be from Saudi Arabia, at the explosion site, and sighted by police after. Hopefully he's under guard from The Stupid: I fully expect some resident idiot to try a retaliatory attack on a Bostonian tonight. The former has a slight chance of panning out, but assumes the attacker was planting the explosives up through the last minute and/or had to detonate from extremely short range.

That's a mail storage box. We still have office-to-office deliveries in Boston, and those brown boxes are actually locked and used by the letter carriers to hold mailbags so that they don't have to carry everything at once.

38. "We're going off on a tangent here" |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-abortion_violenceJanuary 29, 1998: Robert Sanderson, an off-duty police officer who worked as a security guard at an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, was killed when his workplace was bombed. Eric Robert Rudolph, who was also responsible for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing, was charged with the crime and received two life sentences as a result. Emily Lyons, a nurse, was severely injured, and lost an eye. October 23, 1998: Dr. Barnett Slepian was shot to death with a high-powered rifle at his home in Amherst, New York. His was the last in a series of similar shootings against providers in Canada and northern New York state which were all likely committed by James Kopp. Kopp was convicted of Slepian's murder after finally being apprehended in France in 2001. June 11, 2001: An unsolved bombing at a clinic in Tacoma, Washington destroyed a wall, resulting in $6,000 in damages. September 11, 2006 David McMenemy of Rochester Hills, Michigan, crashed his car into the Edgerton Women's Care Center in Davenport, Iowa. He then doused the lobby in gasoline and started a fire. McMenemy committed these acts in the belief that the center was performing abortions; however, Edgerton is not an abortion clinic. April 25, 2007: A package left at a women's health clinic in Austin, Texas, contained an explosive device capable of inflicting serious injury or death. A bomb squad detonated the device after evacuating the building. Paul Ross Evans (who had a criminal record for armed robbery and theft) was found guilty of the crime. May 31, 2009: Dr. George Tiller was shot and killed by Scott Roeder as Tiller served as an usher at church in Wichita, Kansas. January 1, 2012 Bobby Joe Rogers, 41, firebombed the American Family Planning Clinic in Pensacola, Florida with a Molotov cocktail; the fire gutted the building. Rogers told investigators that he was motivated to commit the crime by his opposition to abortion, and that what more directly prompted the act was seeing a patient enter the clinic during one of the frequent anti-abortion protests there. April 1, 2012 A bomb exploded on the windowsill of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, resulting in a fire that damaged one of the clinic's examination rooms. No injuries were reported. On April 3, the FBI arrested 50-year-old Francis Grady on charges of "arson of a building used in interstate commerce" and "intentionally damaging the property of a facility that provides reproductive health services".

My prayers are with all who were directly involved in this. Last I heard there were a lot of critical injuries, so the death toll might go up. I don't think this is a home grown attack. Home grown would have targeted a building, an organization, a group, not a random crowd. Guess we'll see. Do we know if any RTVW people were there and if so, are they ok? Agman's Spring Fling '12.2

One theory floated out there relating to this was that the guy tried several times to get into the restricted area where all the finished runners, families and officials were. Right now, we have no way of knowing how many times he tried to get in or how long beforehand he did so, but he was last seen trying to get in about five minutes prior to the first explosion.

Probably not, terrorists tend to like using surprise and hitting big targets, now there has been an attack everyone is a little more on edge and triple checking everything, particularly with big events, I know the Met Police have/are talking to the London marathon organisers to check their security, so any attack is more likely to fail.

Although I've seen a couple of comments from Spokane that they wonder if the thwarted bombing of the MLK walk couldn't have been a dry run for this bombing. That was a pipe bomb in a backpack and also placed in a way that would have taken out of a lot of legs if it had gone off.

LAST EDITED ON 04-16-13 AT 06:36 PM (EST)It's certainly worth investigating, though I don't think it as suspicious as the tinfoil crowd would have it. Two lines of speculation converge. 1. The culprit filmed the event from a safe vantage point. 2. The explosives were set off by remote control and the culprit needed a line of sight to pick his time. I don't think either speculation is of much value. Why bother filming what would already be being filmed? The investigators should be able to figure out how the devices were triggered.

Doctors expect all of their patients to survive. Investigators have an image of a potential suspect but do not know his name. The U.S. Marshals Service said the federal courthouse was evacuated due to a bomb threat. Workers returned to the courthouse later Wednesday afternoon. A portion of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston was also evacuated. According to the Boston Globe, an unattended car with gas cans inside was left at the valet entrance. President Barack Obama and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are among those planning to attend a Boston interfaith healing service on Thursday. The second suspect — the one in the white hat in photos released by the FBI — was on the loose, and police ordered people in the Boston suburb of Watertown to stay in their homes and businesses not to open. Boston shut down its buses and subway system for the hunt. The suspects are brothers with the last name Tsarnaev, law enforcement officials told NBC News. The suspect at large, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, is 19 and has a Massachusetts driver’s license, they said. Law enforcement officials told NBC News that both men had international ties, had been in the United States about a year and had military experience.

Lets get a law passed outlawing all military experience. And large capacity pressure cookers. Sounds like the second suspect's days on the run and on earth are very limited. Hope he isn't allowed to take anyone else with him. So they spend a lot of time and effort putting together the hardware and the plan, and also some effort to execute the plan. But they didn't give any thought to their escape plan? Or was it their idiotic plan to rob a 7-11 on the way out of town to provide the cash and beef jerky that they would need for a life on the run? They didn't use suicide vests, so they probably thought that they could survive the bombing.

While I generally avoid religious themed comments, I must say that I'm certain this particularly cretin is now enjoying the eternal company of other killers of Innocents, such as Bin Laden, Stalin, Saddam, and their ilk. The added pleasures of fire, brimstone, and the occasional poke up the wazzu with a pitchfork rounds out their routine.

LAST EDITED ON 04-19-13 AT 08:38 PM (EST)This could be the end of the road for Suspect Number 2. If they've actually got him cornered, it doesn't seem likely he'll come out of this alive, one way or another.
(eta) Apparently, he hid in a boat in someone's yard and somehow got discovered. It's now a "standoff" according to some news agencies, including CNN.

A CNN crew near the scene heard about two dozen gunshots fired, but it was not clear if the shots were fired by the suspect, authorities or both. A number of small explosions, believed to be stun grenades, also were heard.Sounds like a (maybe a Fed) SWAT team moved in very quickly with non-lethal weapons to knock him out after the initial skirmish and haul him in. Thinking about it, it's impressive how much effort went into finding and stopping these guys, to the point of literally shutting down a major East Coast city for an entire day, with thousands of law enforcement and intelligence personnel work on it around the clock. There was a sense of determination that was shared from the Oval Office, federal agencies, the state government, and the Boston (and let us not forget, university) police. No doubt the intelligence services are investigating all of their past contacts and visits and it's quite possible that there's more to all of this than meets the eye. And it's sad, the bombings and shootings, the death and all the injury that was caused in so many peoples' lives by two very highly misguided brothers in a dysfunctional family with roots in a war-torn land. My heart and my thoughts go out to all of the people there who suffered for this.

LAST EDITED ON 04-20-13 AT 07:14 AM (EST)They are making a big deal of whether they should be read to this citizen of the United States are not. Does he have a different set of rights if that statement is read? So the right to a lawyer is not absolute, but only if the people arresting me decided I get to have one? I mean I thought the point of reading it was to make sure people know the information the should probably know but may not (like you have a right to plead the fifth and not talk). Not that in reading the rights they then apply to you and if they don't read them you don't have those rights? Or am I confused about this. I mean I had thought this was about not giving a citizen of another country in our borders the same rights as a citizen or something, not that I only can have these rights if they are specifically given to me, and they decide if I am a criminal or a something else before there is any legal proceedings so it is just up to whoever puts the cuffs on me if I have rights or not. Because that is how the reporting makes it kinda sound, and I just want to check. ETA: Well based on how careful they are about reporting his medical condition it is good to know that his HIPAA privacy rights are absolute and cannot be revoked by anyone at any time for any reason.

LAST EDITED ON 04-21-13 AT 02:03 PM (EST)Good question, and it depends on whether this is treated as a crime or an act of warfare or terrorism. From all that has been said so far, from the Prez on down, it's terrorism, so all bets are off on legal protections. This could become quite a media circus with the legal proceedings, future discoveries, and the spotlight on the brothers' dysfunctional family. In any case, it seems unlikely that he'll end up in Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Capn's temple lions
(eta latest news) Federal terrorism charges against Boston Marathon bombings suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev could be filed soon, even as he remains hospitalized, a Justice Department official told CNN on Saturday. The 19-year-old could also face murder charges at the state level. Federal prosecutors are at the heavily guarded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where Tsarnaev remains in serious condition while in federal custody, and they are working on formulating the charges.

I read around a bit on the public safety exception and if I understand correctly, they can question him about whether and where there are other dangers that he knows of in order to identify and neutralize those dangers. And nothing he tells them can be used against him in court. Once that line of questioning is exhausted he would be Mirandized.

141. "Sibiling impact." |
Two parts of the capture story stood out to me: the bit where the younger was only taken in because a good citizen violated his 'orders' by leaving the house in the first place -- that's Americans for you: don't tell us what to do -- and how the older got caught. According to police, at the end of one car chase phase, the brothers had theirs stopped and the older got out. Presumably he did something threatening, because the police then shot him. And the younger brother -- decided to resume the getaway, got the engine going, and hit something which was in his way. Namely, the older brother. Right. He ran over his own sibling in order to escape. Truly no greater love. I don't know if they had a getaway plan. The 7-11 robbery seems to have been an unrelated crime, so that takes out 'get money to run with'. Killing the MIT officer -- recognized? Cause as much terror as they could before they were dropped? The carjacking makes it look like they might have been heading out, but there are ways in it was incompetent at best: two of them and the driver escapes? Unless you're trying to lure the police in for a firefight -- in which case, we're back to 'kill until we're killed'. When I heard the younger was in a boat, I thought he'd headed for the water. Someone's backyard didn't really focus in until more details came through. It seems as if potentially having gotten some of your ideas from those who regularly engage in suicide bombings tends to hinder the 'and then what?' part of the strategy. And I'm still surprised we got the younger alive. One circlemate proposed the nastiest thing he could do if too wounded to continue would be finding the most isolated place to die and letting the authorities waste hundreds of thousands of search hours looking for a suspect who no longer strictly existed while the entire region continued to shiver through the nights. Maybe that's what he was going for in the bottom of the boat. Or maybe he was waiting for any chance to do anything at all where more people would die. We'll see what comes out when the rants begin. Just be glad he wasn't seventeen.

I thought they had just lifted the "stay in your house" order shortly before the guy went to the back yard.I wouldn't have looked in the boat. I would have just called the cops if I saw blood and a cut tie down. From what I've gathered that house was just outside the "search every building" area so that is how come it wasn't checked out before. I was thinking he might have just found some hole to bleed out in and we wouldn't find him until someone called in a really bad odor. I think the find a spot to hide would be pretty instinctual at that point and I don't know if he was still in plot and scheme mode or shocked how did I get away and did I really run over my brother mode. If the reports that he just went back to campus and was living his life until he was on a wanted poster are correct they may have had a "they will never catch us look how long it took them to find that Unibomber guy" theory. Sure running immediately puts you on the radar as someone who might be guilty, but it also gives you enough time to get out of reach. Can't lock down the whole country and do a house to house search.

CNN story.David Henneberry had been cooped up for hours, stuck inside as police searched for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings. He ventured out for some fresh air after police lifted their order to stay indoors. He looked at the boat parked in his yard. What he saw brought an end to the authorities' sweeping manhunt. "The tarp on his winterized boat had sort of been flapping in the wind," his stepson Robert Duffy told CNN's Piers Morgan. Henneberry had tied down the covering on the vessel in his backyard so firmly that it had not budged all winter long, not even through this year's blizzards. "He got closer and realized that one of the retention straps had literally been cut -- not chafed, not broken or unhooked," Duffy said. Henneberry saw something else -- something on the tarp that looked like blood. The Watertown resident thought some animal had forced its way into his boat. Maybe it was a squirrel, he told his stepson. Henneberry climbed a stepladder to look inside. "He basically stuck his head under the tarp (and) noticed a pool of blood," Duffy said. It was dark under the tarpaulin, so the boat owner could only make out vague contours, "but he definitely noticed there was something crumpled up in a ball," the stepson said. A pool of blood; a manhunt in Watertown; time to call 911.

When they talked about it more about the only thing it means is they can ask operational questions. Is there another bomb, who gave you money, etc for a few hours before they have to say the words and if you do say something before they say the words they can actually use it in court. But in this case do they really need that? I mean it isn't like they have nothing at all to hold him on from the evidence collected so far. And I don't like the idea that you can just for giggles decide you have probably cause for certain crimes and remove rights from a citizen of the USA indiscriminately. I'm sure there are some limitations, I hope there are. But it seemed really jarring to see that the Hospital is protecting his HIPAA privacy rights as they would for any other human being, but the judicial system/police seem to act if they don't keep him from his rights as long as possible they will never convict him of anything. I mean if they just want to talk to me at the police station (they think I saw something) They have no intention of arresting me. I can still bring a lawyer and not answer any questions I don't want to, right? Because they were almost making it sound like until a cop says those words you have no right to have a lawyer and have no Fifth Amendment rights. I didn't think Miranda granted you the rights. Just remind you of them if you haven't passed the citizenship test in the last year and may have forgotten them from the 57 million times you have heard them read on TV dramas.

If he did, then he did it illegally. The younger one might have been able to vote in the last election, but I'm pretty sure Massachusetts doesn't release suspect ballot records. And if such records exist, worry lots.Sorry, but I posted that as a velvet glove nod towards the extreme edges of both faiths having more in common than either wishes to admit. And if you've been following the thread, you know the New York Post has been blowing what remains of their journalistic credentials left and right -- mostly far right -- so I have no idea how far to trust that story anyway. Disappointed? No. I wouldn't have been surprised if they were Religious Reich -- for any faction. It sounds increasingly like they're Islamic fringe. Which is mostly like the Christian fringe, only with looser clothing. But until this part of the (maybe slightly accurate?) story broke, the lack of claimants, videos, and general You All Deserved This Because We Said So statements made me believe they might have been thrill killers. And their silence still bothers me. One can no longer testify. The other may never do so. If I was as much of a cross-hater as you seem to peg me to, I'd have a talk show, documentaries, and even more people would pronounce my name wrong.

I just think you use "Christian" and "Religious Right" interchangeably - maybe something that you should consider not doing? I'm not sure the Religious Right is a faith, either, any more so than Vegans or Environmentalist’s... and any of those groups can claim holiness or god. I know you generally write these things to provoke. And I don’t know how much of a Christ(ian) hater you are, I haven’t had a pizza and a beer with you to find out – so no, that’s not what I’m thinking. I hate how a minority of high-profile, loud Christians have made it a punch line and mockery to have a faith in God. But I really can’t do much about these people – and most of the time you are generally correct with your assessment of… “us” (there probably needs to have some definition around your “us” and my “us”). In the mean time I know who I am and why I have faith and what I do with that; and others shoot people and blow things up in the name of their faith.

It depends on how you break it down. Food stamps for the family -- I don't know how Mass. determines assistance rates: around here, it could easily be $200 a month (which still doesn't help much). Utility assistance, figure that's another $100. Nothing a lot of people living in poverty (or faking same) can't get by filling out the right forms over several months.Section 8 housing is the big one. Locally, it's almost impossible to get into -- applications are taken once or twice a year for one day -- and if you get through, they typically pay just about your entire rent. But it's generally limited to the disabled and seniors whose rent increase has outpaced their Social Security. Again, I don't know what the New England rules are, but I'd think it would be hard for a working household -- or even an unemployed one -- to get into. Weird. Incidentally, someone apparently did propose regulating and tracking pressure cooker sales, and at least one place tried pulling them off the shelves. Direct that outrage. The one that gave me epidermis irritation: people who called and tweeted ESPN to demand the network stop covering news: just drop the marathon and go to a backup lacrosse game. Priorities!

LAST EDITED ON 05-14-13 AT 07:31 PM (EST)As reported it was a silly series of lies, and is suspicious. But why bring a pressure cooker thru customs anyway when every Walmart, Target, sears, garage sale etc. sells them? And, although the missing page from his passport might be a cause for detainment, is that even illegal? At some point the authorities are going to realize that bringing a pressure cooker thru customs, for whatever reason, isn't illegal.
