"Pirate Master Episode 5: CBS Misdirection" |
Two crews scavenge Blackjack Bay in search of the perfect hand.
Is the "perfect hand" a land formation they need to find during the treasure hunt? A snooping Pirate learns their fate after spying on their loose-lipped crewmates in the galley. One Pirate knows that a losing bid on the Royal Pardon will doom their voyage forever.
The preview made it look as if Nessa is in danger and Joe Don is helping her out with $ to buy the Royal Pardon. If this is true it implies she is no longer an officer, and therefore the red crew finds the treasure. Unless I am totally confused, which is always a possibility.

It could also be that JD is loaning money to Nessa so she can buy the pardon for him, from him, since he is not allowed to keep it before the next cast off. I'm not sure if they are allowed to give it to someone else if they win it? That would put the money back in JD's hands as well as having the pardon.

Is the "perfect hand" a land formation they need to find during the treasure hunt? Since I have more than enough vices without adding gambling to the list, I may be wrong about this. But isn't the "perfect" Blackjack "hand" Ace - Jack (of Spades)? And I have no idea how this combination would 'play out' as the objective of a scavenger hunt unless Blackjack Bay refers to a waterfront community as well as to a body of water. Perhaps they'll be looking for a tavern? Or a local character with distinctive body art? Another ship or boat with those markings? ETA: Or a casino/resort where the winning crew will be permitted to attempt to increase their expedition earnings? With any luck, maybe we'll even be treated to an imaginative "sabotage point" and share a few pints with friendly Dominicans (the secular rather than the priestly variety). Just island dreamin' ...

Well, according to the Locations Map at this Dominica tourism site (scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link or the map for the interactive popup) the working title for Episode Five was “The Pilot’s Jackpot”. Curiously, though, this is the one Episode button that doesn’t reveal the name of the location. Or, if it does, it has defied all of my determined efforts to ‘pull’ it down. But, in the gallery of filming-site photographs found on the same page is one of Hodges Bay on the northern coast of the island (my searches of several ‘official sites’ for Blackjack Bay produced no results) and renaming a large body of water would be child’s play for a producer accustomed to having them part at his whim. And all of that coupled with the misdirection reference to a “perfect hand” make it, I think, a fairly safe wager that the expedition theme is the dealer’s dream game and that the crews (like its players-against-the-house) will be frantically scavenging for that magical Ace – Jack (Jackpot!) combination. But why do I think that you knew all of that? ... The rest of the story, of course, is only wishful thinking on my part. I’m a little weary of the current expedition formula. But I think that I am going to have to give up the vision of a casino dancing in my head. If Dominica has any gaming establishments, she is keeping them a very closely guarded secret. So, unless MB built one just for us to come, I am probably … out of luck. By the way: I knew about harbor pilots. And riverboat pilots. But I had never before run across a reference to the pilot of a sailing vessel. So, as they tend to do, one of my clicks led to another and then another until I landed at these fascinating places: Black Pirates by Cindy Vallar and Pirates and Sailors: Black History on the High Seas at National Geographic Kid's News (I liked the pictures). So curses on the fools who set Christian adrift before Episode Five! And double their afflictions for keeping Joy until it! I really liked those pictures!
