All of us have griped from time to time about those "non-elimination" legs. Sometimes a team who we don't think deserves it gets saved by a non-elim.Now we've seen the "to be continued" episodes twice. I'm curious, which do you think is worse? or which do you think is better? I'll chime in later because I don't want to influence any opinions.

Last night's "to be continued" was fun. The racers all thought they would get a rest, but they had to continue on. My scadenfreude side was pleased. I'm pretty sure this will be the end of Meredith and Gretchen due to fatigue. Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

I think it is a matter of semantics, as in both cases the episode ends with no one Philiminated, but at least a non-elim leg results in someone losing their money and belongings. It was obvious that last night's episode would be non-elimination, so the only suspense for me was to see who lost everything by finishing last.I was chuckling about Gretchen's senior citizen discount at the airport backpack shop, but figured it didn't matter if she bought one or not since she'd be giving it to Phil at the end of the leg. Guess I was wrong... "to be continued..." "Twenty minutes into the future..."

I didn't mind this one as much as I minded the one last season. Last season it felt like they were doing something just to keep Lori and Bolo around. (I know, they weren't. But it felt that way.) I like how this season it's obvious it's an extra long leg of the race. I like that idea.

I agree. If it's a planned superleg, I like it. That Hungary incident last season was bullcrap! ... but I think the producers stumbled on to this new twist accidentally and it's great.I'd much rather have the TBCs than the non-elims. I think TAR is on to a great alternative to those gosh darn non-elims which, IMO, just prolongs the agony for those teams. I was pissed when Brandon & Nicole went for the Fast Forward, decided they wouldn't cut their hair and then were saved by the non-elim! Those dumb-dumbs would have never been in the fianl three without it. There should've been a severe consequence for their action, namely elimination!
With the TBC episodes, there is none of that! I like it so much better. This way too (if they get rid of the non-elims and make more superlegs, say three per race) nobody will be saved at the pitstop when they are the weaker team or make a crucial mistake.

I totally agree. the non-elims only encourage a lacksi-dazical attitude toward a task, or even a leg, "...becasue it might be a non elimination". Every pit stop, someone should get eliminated. Turn the 12 leg race into a 16 episode series by having a few TBCs. The resolution then becomes much more suspenseful.Heck that way you could even have a TBC in one of the early episodes. Unlike the non-elims that are saved for the later legs of the race. "Golly, The batcomputer is none too frisky today, Batman." - Robin, The Boy Wonder

I rather favor the resolution of the non-elims. Sure, the teams each remain in the race, but there are clear consequences for having come in last on a given episode. The "To Be Continued" gimmick smacks more of "we want ratings for next week" than "you just never know what will happen here". And yes, I realize that ratings are always a major consideration for TAR, but some methods are less obvious (and so, less annoying) than others. I prefer it when each episode has a start a middle and a finish while remaining part of a larger story line. The race within the race. Right now, I'm just seeing The Fonz frozen in space above a shark tank, leathers on, thumb up...

Well I don't think the TBC alone is really "jumping the shark". Let's hold off on that judgement until we see how the "family edition" works out. ETA: Welcome to the boards! 'nutz: Proud member of the inoffensive OT Triumvirate... and Shroomhater! - shroom go boom!

I hate non-elimination eps because I like to see the stupid people get offed.I kinda liked the "twist" of Phil handing out a clue. I hope they have double tasks with no rest at all. If the first thing that happens is another production-produced bunching I will be mad as h@ll. Double tasks should be a chance for one team to get way ahead, or for a stupid one (M&G) to fall wayyyy behind. The Lori Bolo 'to be continued' seemed way too manipulative. This one seems more like a planned, mean thing. I like it when the racers have mean, hard-to-do challenges.

I think Its a bit unfair calling meredith and gretchen stupid. =P lets outline all the parts in the box challange that used human intelligence: 1) ability to move from box to box and around the room 2) ability to disinguish one box from another 3) ability to open box 4) ability to reconize if desired result is met by opening boxI mean, they could train a chimp to do that. =P to be fair, so little intelligence is actually used in the amazing race, its almost of no advantage at all to have a higher education or experiance, as the challanges are all pretty much about either endurance or physical strength =P and no, I dont consider pulling aside locals or dealing up for the best tickets at an airport particularly indicaive of intelligent thought ;/

I don't mind the TBC at all. It's mean and fun. In addition to possibly offing M&G, it could be a factor for the remaining teams. Those with less endurance may not recover after they do get a pitstop and could be in a weaker position for the next leg. Hopefully this means L&A go ... The racers decision not to yield anyone could come back to bite them if at the end of next week it turns out to be an elimination leg. If Romber had yielded L&A and they end up finishing next week just ahead of M&G, who get eliminated, then Romber will have missed out on an opportunity to get rid of L&A.

As much as I don't like non-elimination rounds, TBC is worse IMHO. At least in a non-elim, you have a winner of the round (that usually wins a trip) and you have a loser (and in recent seasons, the loser does get consequences - loss of money and now items). TBC just leaves the viewer hanging. And if you are wondering, I don't like TBC cliffhangers in non-reality TV shows either. I WILL end up on a spoiler board trying to find out what is happening. Three is the perfect number.

I think it would be great if the clue Phil hands out has a fast forward -- that would give some consequence to being in first or a very close second at the cliffhanger point. Or if there were another yield right away. I would hate the cliffhanger if they first had a bunching point, then had a yield or fast forward. I didn't like after the cliffhanger last season they had a bunch first and there was no consequence as Lori and Bolo had the same chance as everyone else. But I am optimistic because they are doing much better with the use of only occasional bunching this season versus last.
