I was curious about that remark too. But they never explained it.

LAST EDITED ON 11-25-04 AT 11:12 AM (EST)Me too! We have to do some digging! Let's see... was there an Olympics there in 1952??? ETA: 1952 Winter Olympics Oslo Norway... check! Speed Skating (500m) Silver Medal won by a Donald McDermott... is this him? I can only find medal winners, not all participants. Opening ceremony was likely held at the location of the ski jump. hmmm... interesting!

In his bio, I think he is listed as 69 years old, so it is very possible for him to have been a spectator there.

As a 23 year old backpacker this past summer I found myself at the ski jump (was there in June). First, to those stupid girls who can’t drive it's very easy to find using public transit. Second, one of the things I remember about the whole “tourist site” was that it had undergone a number of size increases and renovation over the past many years. In fact, at the jump, they have a whole wall on the outside of the museum showing shadow diagrams of the many stages of its height. I remember thinking to myself that “that old dude’s comment is inaccurate” because the ski jump would not have been the same 52 years ago. Maybe it was too dark for Don to see that. Also I’m pissed because the zip line is not an actual tourist attraction.

<the zip line is not an actual tourist attractionSurely it wasn't constructed just for TAR? If not, and if it's not a tourist attraction, what's the story? Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

I think it probably was just for TAR, it’s not to hard to construct a zip line. If you go there as a regular tourist, the launch area is completely enclosed. You have to walk up a few flights of stairs (they actually have an elevator for much of the height), then you can look all around the platform (maybe 15 feet by 15 feet) and even walk to where jumpers would get ready to launch. The wind is howling across the enclosed glass, but you can't get off the platform without going back down the stairs and then elevator (under normal circumstances), it was enclosed (at least that’s how it was in late June’04) Anyone could get up there who went through the museum without the option of Zip line down.Has anyone else been there before or since?

the ski jump would not have been the same 52 years agoBut perhaps he was in Oslo for the 1952 Olympics, he never said he was at that ski jump, just that he said he was there 52 years ago while he happened to be standing by the ski jump on the show. So I guess we assumed he meant that ski jump. Mon Dieu, Mon Cherie... c'est magnifique!!!

The zip line would have been created for the race. Nearly all of the road blocks/detours are created.Look at last season, do you think that the NZ tourism authority would daily take people out by boat to under a bridge, hook up clibbing safety gear and let them walk along the rafters? The budget is big for this tv show and will always create special activities.
