I'm just glad I'm not the only one who was disappointed by that. I mean, they have stretched the genres before, but neither of these artists were even singing in the Big Band era. Seems a bit unfair to say the least. Big Band can be a very weird (yet entertaining) genre for AI, but even if they aren't that suited for it, they should have to do it. I don't exactly think that George Huff was suited well for Latin week, but they didn't let him do Elton John and add in some spanish language. It is at the least unfair it seems. I'm sure that John Stevens had to feel a bit scorned that he missed what could have been his genre by one week, and then someone does Queen and Barbara.

It was definitely a weird choice, but LaToya had already admitted that she was making a Streisand song a big band song, so why isn't it okay for Fantasia? I think she did a far more excellent job with the second one, that's for sure!(We gotta b*tch or we'll explode!)

1. Fantasia- She looked and sounded like perfection. She really blew me away with the last song.2. George- He looked great and sounded great. I'm impressed that he did "Wonderful World" his way instead of totally mimicking the original version. After that it went downhill for me. 3. Latoya- She sounded good through most of it, she screeched enough towards the end to give me a bad headache. I don't like her outfit at all. 4. Diana- I love her dress but not on her. It was too tight and too mature for her. She looked like she was wearing a slip. I love the shoes. She sounded okay. 5. Jasmine- She started out good on the first song and went flat twice. She slaughtered the second song and just screeched her way through it. I didn't like her outfit either, and the fact that her bra was showing made it look tacky.

Maybe it was Diana's dress, her too perky attitude, or just that she was flat alot on the first song she sang. She hit the power notes but the softer notes she completely missed.

The song choices drove me nearly to distraction, but here's how I rank the singing:1. LaToya 2. Fantasia 3. George 4. Jasmine 5. Diana I really hope it's Jasmine or Diana who hits the road. All three judges need to watch the tape tonight and realize that Diana wasn't anywhere near as good as they seemed to think she was. She was off-key and shaky on all the soft parts. Jasmine was actually better. I was sitting in front of my computer, listening on head phones for much of the performances. Without seeing them, I was better able to judge the quality of the singing. The visual distorts it for me. Anyway, while Jasmine had some rough spots, she was much more listenable than Diana. Diana only sounds good on power notes. Opinionated

the judges' comments and the viewers' eyes will play an important role... After listening their mp3's, I realized that Diana was really off and all over the place but I think her stage presence and energy compensated it all and it's obvious that Randy had his faves at this point (Diana, Fantasia, and LaToya...) Jasmine did great in her 1st and 2nd songs except that she made a Jazz rendition in the 2nd, ran out of air, and strained/cracked her voice at the end... I felt Jas was really stressed in this show... it started to show that her energy started to lose, her voice started to strain and crack, she started to lose her sensibility (like what Byrd notice about her)...Diana, on the other hand, seems like a product for this show... she's like being mold for that one... I think Simon pointed that out in Country Night... As for talent, I believe Jasmine is great (compared to Diana) in her age but I felt that she can't handle the pressure and stress that well... It shows in the Final 5 special... my six dif'rent flava

Don't know why I'm intruding here - first time I've watched more than 5 minutes of this show - got an extra 30 minutes on tape tonight waiting for 24 to start so I watched some of it. How do y'all watch this stuff week after week?On to the ratings: 1. La Toya 2. Fantasia The rest of them belong on a cruise ship (thank you Randy!). 1. Latoya London - most consistantly good throughout the competition.2. Jasmine - especially the first song. 3. George - thought he sounded better than he has for the past few weeks. He had some very pronounced facial expressions tonight, maybe he's channeling Jennifer. At least I didn't notice the bounce. 4. Diana - The too tight nightgown ruined it for me. 5. Fantasia- Horrid. The Queen song was awful. The helium quality to her voice is enough to make my ears bleed. The second song started out beautifully, but a third of the way through she musta hit on the helium again, cause the screeching was horrendous. Oh, and way to use your kid. She is one big phoney, and I can't wait til she's outta there. Blech. My votes will go to my top 2, with more going to Jasmine, because I don't like the judges telling me who to vote for. If they want to pick the winner, why let people vote? Oh, and Ryan's "save the best for last" comment was too much. Puhleeeze. One more thing...why must Paula grope Randy and Simon while the contestants are singing. She needs to keep those nasty, infected hands to herself. Ewwwww.

1) Latoya- By far, the best tonight. Great stage presence and strong controlled vocals. 2) Fantasia- Her voice is not screetchy. She has good voice control and emotionality in her songs. She's not yelling, either...it's VERY difficult to yell and stay on pitch. 3) George- Ehhh...Very safe. 4) Diana- What the judges heard in the studio did not transpire to the TV. When she didn't get a standing ovation on the first song you could tell that she was freaked out...AND...the only reason that the whole audience was standing at the end of the second song was because she told them to. 5) Jasmine- Bad outfit...boring performances.

Well, I'm gonna rate the best, but you guys better not critize my picks! Feel free to criticize, though. 1. Fantasia. Singing was spot on. I sensed a true emotional connection with the music, the lyrics, and the audience. That is star quality. Besides, I want her baby to have a better life than Fantasia did, growing up. 2. George. I love the sound of George's voice. I love "What a Wonderful World." I love hearing George sing the song. He has the emotional connection with the music and the audience. I noticed the audience was not swayed by the judges "adgenda" for pimping La Toya, Fantasia, and Diana. 3. La Toya. Girl can sang! I was very impressed with her performance, but I'm finding that the pinched sound of the upper register distracts me a little, and aside from the glorious glory notes, there was a lot of oversinging. 4. Diana. Both songs OK. 5. Jasmine. First song was lovely, second song was just a bunch of doo doo...I mean, boo boo...I mean, oh, never mind. Anyway, I heard Jasmine power votes for herself, and she dissed Hawaii by giving up the flower, and she's trying to pick up that Christina A. bad girl image (see Entertainment Weekly pics), and everyone saw how she sang out of tune in the Gloria Estefan video segment, and besides!!! I heard she broke up with her boyfriend as soon as she got into the final 12, so I'm not gonna vote for Jasmine! No way!

"I noticed the audience was not swayed by the judges "adgenda" for pimping La Toya, Fantasia, and Diana."I really noticed it tonite. I thought Diana sounded off yet the judges were crazy for it. They are really pushing for their faves (well they are the "judges") But it po'd me how George got treated. "Wonderful World" was very very good. And Latoya sounded screechy a few times...

I agree, I admit George had been off the past 2 weeks maybe cause he was sick but his performance tonight was great. He looked great and how else are you suppose to sing those songs. It is so obvious that Randy and Simon are bent on having Fantasia and Latoya in the finals with Randy throwing Diana in there too. I think they actually insult America by thinking that people are swayed by what they say and I guess some are but when a person is good, then give the credit they deserve. Also, when did Barbara Streisand fall into Big Band, I bet she loved that since that would make her like what 100 years old today..

1. Latoya- wow! She continues to impress me and earn my votes! 2. Diana- hard to pick between her and fantasia for 2nd, but it doesn't matter to me, since I'm going for Latoya for AI! Good song choices and fairly well executed. 3. Fantasia- kinda boring- good pitch, just didn't blow me away, which one needs to do this stage in the competition. 4. Jasmine- I think she's cute, which is why I put her ahead of George. Since I only voted for Latoya, I guess it doesn't matter. Parts were pitchy. 5. George- Good singing, bad song choices! I have been rooting for you secretly to be in the top 3, but I was disappointed tonight! But, you make the Houston auditions proud! My pick bottom 2: George and Jasmine, with Jasmine saying Aloha. ****I attempted to vote 287 times, but got a continual busy signal for Latoya. I still got busy signals right up to 10:00. I got through 39 times for her thought the 2 hour voting period. ****To make sure there wasn't a problem, I voted once for Jasmine, and got through the 1st time******

1. Latoya- Best overall singer, yes. I just wish she showed a little more personality.2. George- Sounded much much better tonight. I think he may be in danger though cause I think he could have done a lot better tonight than he did. He played it safe IMO. 3. Jasmine- Yes, I like Jasmine. I think she has a great voice. Her first song was very good. And I wanted so much to like the second one because that's one of my favorite songs, but she did mess it up something terrible. 4. Fantasia- I will compliment her on the personality and spunk she brings to the stage. She would be a good performer. But her voice does nothing for me. 5. Diana- I actually like her voice more than Fantasia, but she just seems way too mechanical to me.

LAST EDITED ON 05-05-04 AT 03:07 PM (EST)1. George Huff- I was not a massive fan of his Louis Armstrong rendition (Not because it wasn't good, but I am a Louis Armstrong fan, and I prefered the original. George just sounded too clean). Still, he was quite solid, best this week considering he at least sang really well and stayed with the Big Band artists. 2. Diana Degarmo- The dress wasn't exactly the best thing ever, but I like her voice and song choices, I don't think she screwed up a lot. Oompa Loompa... 3. LaToya London- I think she is clearly on the inside track right now. She not only has the voice to be the best, she can perform with or without a band supremely. (Edit: She did a Barbara song too, dropping her down. I don't appreciate going out of the genre completely) 4. Jasmine Trias- Not a big Jasmine fan, I felt she was mediocre 5. Fantasia Barrino- Not because of her voice (great), but because she didn't stay in the Big Band genre. Queen is not big band. Barbara is not big band. And the kid thing is a bit unnerving. OK, Edit time: I have been alerted of the error of my ways.

I would have replied to the original post to continue this thread, but here was a good place to reply to Fishercat as well.My picks: Fantasia - She's a performer. George - He is coming back. Hope he can make it. LaToya - I am trying to like her. Talented, yes. Diana - Ehhh. Jasmine -- She's okay, but young, and the darn flower was back. Wish she wouldn't close her eyes all the time. I would just like to make Fishercat aware that LaToya also stated in her ad-lib (that she screwed up terribly) that she was making a "Barbara" song into a big band song. Can't drop Fantasia to 5th and have LaToya in first, then can we?

John Stevens may have done good tonight if he were still in the competition, but he was lacking in the other night (And I was a J.S. fan).Anyway, tonight the best, in my humble opinion was: 1). Diana Digarmo 2). George Huff 3). Latoya London 4). Jasmine Trias 5). Fantasia Barrino. Fantasia is good, but tonight, not so much. I enjoyed Diana & George plus Latoya was good also.

Three songs, though sung well, were not ok. "Don't Rain on My Parade" is from Broadway, and it's not Big Broadway night. Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" is from 1979, well past Big Band. "What a Wonderful World" dates to Louis Armstrong's 1968 hit. Again, nowhere near the Big Band era. A more apt title would have been "Broadway and Pop Hits Adapted to Big Band," but that would have been awkward. It's like calling it "Opera Night" and singing country music opera style. Humph!

To all of the people criticizing Fantasia for not singing a song from a big band group:1) It's a style of music...much like country can be made pop, pop can be made techno...and rock can be made big band. 2) One of LaToya's songs was NOT originally done in the big band style. 3) Oh wait...one of Jasmine's songs was NOT originally done in the big band style. Grrrr....wake-up people...it's glad to know that the American population knows nothing about music...

Hey, wow! That was me who was talking about the 10 cd set! Someone actually reads my posts! Kewl! The set I was referring to was only of WWII music, just a small blip in the vast 3 decades of music they could've chosen from! Some of the best American music ever recorded came from that era (in my humble opinion) and listening to someone sing Queen with a big band behind them doesn't do it for me. Regardless of how technical anyone wants to get, when you say "BIG BAND" people think 30's, 40's, 50's. (But hey, I'm just someone who's been a singer all her life, what the hell do I know?) opinionated P.S. Tonight, on rap night, the contestants will be performing songs from Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, The Andrews Sisters and Bing Crosby all in the "STYLE OF RAP." Won't that be exciting? After all, it's not about the songs, it's the style of music that's important!

The era demands either period clothing like Diana's or a quietly understated evening gown. But maybe Jasmine's idea of a Big Band is one that goes platinum?

Where was "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy?" Or "T'Aint Nobody's Business?" Oh well. From Best to Worst: 1. Latoya - She's usually first with me. Although she lost points by not remembering Natalie Cole's name. However, it is a singing contest and she's all that! 2. Fantasia - I agree with Simon; it's these two with everyone else as bench warmers. I am becoming more resigned to Fantasia now; if she wins, at least she can sing. 3. Diana - Don't wear your nightie on stage. She was okay, would have liked it if she did "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" though. I was kinda waiting for that. 4. George - I guess I'm the only person who thinks he should NOT be there at all! He was a little better last night than his last three attempts, but if he's the only male left that says a LOT about the lack of talent of the males this year! 5. Jasmine - all I can do when she sings is hear her breathe. I'm sure the rest of them are breathing along with singing, but I can only hear Jasmine doing it. Her singing was just fairly medoicre.

LAST EDITED ON 05-06-04 AT 11:53 PM (EST)I think Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy would've been a GREAT choice, but I have to disagree with you on your choice for Diana to sing it. I think that is the style of singing that is worst for her. She really impresses me on the power notes but she has nothing on the other end of the spectrum. THAT is what sets Latoya & Fantasia apart from the rest. Plus, they're just GOOD performers on stage... they don't bore you to tears or sing the entire song with their eyes closed or with a cheesy smile on their face. I would LOVE to see Fantasia & Latoya in the finals... they're really the only ones I look forward to watching now. **edited because i'm retarded**

No, I don't agree with the judges'comment about Diana. Even Simon's comment was not negative at all.The Best: 1.Latoya- no question, she nailed both songs. Even the perfectionist Barbra Sreisand would give her a standing ovation. 2.George - very soulful; I liked his rendition of What A Wonderful World. What the hell were the judges talking about? What was that 'safe' comment all about? Just because it was a very familiar melody did not make his rendition any less wonderful. 3.Jasmine - her first song was great; not so happy with the second. 4. Fantasia - not so happy with her two songs. The first one was too 'repetitious', the second one did not have a very good timing or somthing was just not right. I'm sure it wasn't her voice. 5. Diana -AWFUL,AWFUL!! The worst rendition of Someone To Watch.... I have ever heard on television. Very out of tune, poor timing, and a very 'callous' performance. The second song was not any better. God. I thought jasmine was done injustice here. Diana should go home first before Jasmine.

1) La Toya London - Excellent performance - Broadway here she comes.2) Fantasia Barrino - I love Fantasia but she nearly fell into third place on this night - if it hadn't been for the 2nd song I might have (no, please don't say it).... put her in 4th place. The comment about sitting down with John was suspect and another shot out to her kid was suspect or a 9 on the what is she saying scale. And now, for my conspiracy theory - I think she doesn't want to win. She's got enough exposure and I'm sure that many people have promised her an album. This is based on the John/baby comments and song choice (at least the first song). Ahh, but that's silly, isn't it....? 3) George Huff - Now, George can sing but he wasn't exceptionally good tonight, it was an OK to fine performance. 4) Diana DeGarmo - The girl can sing but what she brings to the stage would be better used on star search. She looked like Miss Piggy last night (the only thing missing was a set of white gloves). 5) Jasmine Trias - Painful, to hear and to see. You are the weakest link, goodbye. 1. LaToya London 2. Diana DeGarmo 3. Jasmine Trias 4. Fantasia Barrino 5. George Huff Fantasia and George are the worst left... LaToya must win. Diana is a distant second, but she is still better than Jaz, Fant, and Geo.
