PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.
As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

"5/3: Final 5 Special & 5/4: Big Band Night" |
Started the thread too early, again... Hope you don't mind. Let's discuss/spoil the Final 5 Special (Monday) and the Big Band Night (Tuesday)... By the way, someone from the other boards said that the final 5 special was taped before Gloria Estefan Night and included John Stevens (he performed "King Of The Road.") Here's the link of photos from alleged special show... (http://www.kidzworld.com/americanidol/slideshow/39.htm) Another rumor, the final 5 contestants will perform two songs each in the Big Band Night... my six dif'rent flava

Kinda find it hard to search for Diana, Jas and LaToya... As for Fantasia and George, Fantasia claimed she was teased as Bugs... I made George as Elmer Fudd since both had resemblances... and subliminal(?) as to Fantasia's "We Love You, Jennifer..." when in fact, George was more credible to add this dedication for Jen since Jen told almost every press that they are close even before semifinals... as if Fantasia's runnin' for Jennifer's fans' votes. And even Jennifer didn't expect Fantasia's claim that she was her "American Idol" per press conference. George should run after Fantasia for that vote... like Elmer Fudd does with Bugs... Just an opinion. (Just kiddin'... I find nothing really related and good point to what I'm saying, but if you do, then good...) As for LaToya (the evil queen from Snow White), from the other AI boards, she was assumed to be icy and cold-hearted by not shedding tears for other contestants (well, I don't really see her that way... since she claimed that she's li'l bit a tomboy when she was young, then it could be her personality, but I did see she was sad with Camile and Amy since 4 of them including Fantasia are close)... As for Diana, I hope I wouldn't be flamed by her fans, but someone did post from the other site that she looked like Miss Piggy... But at least, she's cute and stylish (I mean Miss Piggy)... As for Jasmine, I had doubts if I will use either Lilo or Stitch... my six dif'rent flava

Singing 2 songs is probably not a rumor. In season 1, they switched to 2 songs for the final four, and season 2, they switched to 2 songs for the final 5.

I wasn't planning on watching it but my sister did, and she wanted me to watch it with her. So here's what I thought. In general it was okay, not bad not good, JPL was looking good. The interviews were fairly interesting with the exception of Jasmine and Latoya who just about put me to sleep.Fantasia - Summertime *She sounded good but it would've been nice to see her just stand up and sing it instead of doing the exact thing she did last time.* George - Take Me To The Pilot *He was great, I loved it.I didn't like this song the first time but it's growing on me.* Jasmine - Inseperable *She sounded nice except for the usual flat parts.* Diana - Think *It was good, this is the kind of song that I think is perfect for her.* LaToya - Somewhere *It was pretty but boring.*

I kind of felt like this show was like the interview segment of a Miss America pageant or something. I kept picturing Sandra Bullock in her "Miss Congeniality" talking to Candace Bergen and William Shatner about what she'd do if someone hurt one of her friends. I kept thinking that they should be coming back out in evening wear and bikinis. I suppose it was a good way for us to get to know more about each of the finalists. I didn't like it or dislike it. Just taking it as one more thing they put out in front of us to get us to vote, I guess. I really do like Fantasia for her spirit, and George finally sounded good. The kids were okay, and I wondered why Diana would wear a shirt that would show the pudge. Latoya was, as someone said, good but boring. George was my favorite, with Fannie Girl next. But, that's not because of their sound, as much as how much fun they seem to be. Interesting how that can affect the vote.

I couldn't stand Fantasia in the beginning but she doesn't bug me like she used to. Funny how voting on talent doesn't seem to be what people are doing after all. After all the lectures from everyone to vote for the talent (because some people didn't like the choice America made)... we're now going back to voting for our favorite based on personality or qualities we see in an individual that we like. Let's face it, George has had three weeks of BAD performances. Like him or not, he has been BAD! Does this an American Idol make? Fantasia has screamed her way through another week...she needs to go...far away!!!!

George had a few sub average performances cause the guy was sick and picked some bad songs. When he sang last night he sounded wonderful! And Fantasia is just different then the rest. A performer should make you smile and enjoy not go into a coma! If a block of wood could sing great should it be an AI?? No. Latoya is very good, but personality wise a bit dull just lacking a spark. A performers passion and personality come through when they perform. She might win and I'd be thrilled if she did, but she is not my favorite.

I agree 100% about personality. I actually think George did a good job last week. All but simon loved him so I guess people are influenced by what Simon says.. As for last night's show, George and Fantasia showed the most personality. Fantasia was a bit over the edge without the shoes and the laying on the floor again. Jasmine and Latoya were boring. Latoya has such an attitude problem it is so obvious. It was like Ryan had to pull words out of her mouth. she also talked about winning and how she will then have more time to spend with her husband since he will be traveling with her. Diana was showing the pudge, her stomach hangs over her belt. I am not critixizing her at all for weight becasue she is young but dress properly if you do have pudge. she was fake if you ask me. Also I noticed that when George sang and went intot he audience Latoya's husband, etc. were up dancing. When Diana went in the audience he would not stand up.. Just a notice on my part. I am still pulling for George, if you talk about sub par performances I would say Diana and Jasmine both had subpar performances in a few shows.

When he sang last night he sounded wonderful! I'm with you on that. I agree George did sound great, it seems like he's back to the real George vocally. We will see. Talent is the first thing I notice, but personality is important when it comes to watching someone sing live. For instance Latoya, I might buy her c.d. but there's no way I'd pay to see her perform live.

Well that just means when they go on tour she is gooing to be outshined by Jennifer, Fantasia and George. Also JPL.

LAST EDITED ON 05-04-04 AT 02:38 PM (EST)I couldn't help but think that if this really was like the Miss America Pageant interview, that LaToya had decreased her chances of winning with her answers. Also, that short, short, almost bald hair style was a bad move, I think. We could see scalp, for Pete's sake! She was secretive in her replies, although she says that's just her. Fine. Not a problem. But, we want to know our future idol's potential, don't we? So, her hubby and the kids are going to be travelling with her? Are they independently wealthy, or is AI supposed to foot the bill? She seemed to be answering what she thought they wanted to hear, not necessarily what she was feeling. The kids were more relaxed than she was, too. George was cute and entertaining. As far as judging the finalists, I've found a couple of incidents when I forgot I was watching a contest, and both were George and Fantasia. Even Jen at one point with the Circle of Life. To me, that makes a worthy performance. When Fannie did Summertime the first time, she was amazing. For a 90 second performance, she sang her behind off. Last night, George's Take Me to the Pilot was so energy charged, it was very enjoyable. Jasmine's song was over before I got into it, and Diana's was typical Diana loud. LaToya was a snooze, although she sounded nice. Still, over before I got into it. Just my opinion, of course. In other words, LaToya needs to step up her personality, cuz we don't necessarily like her as much as we do the others.
(We gotta b*tch or we'll explode!) Edited to add: After reading the rest of the thread, I just want to say that I noticed George repeating what Ryan said to him, too, but I attributed it to nerves, too. He is very animated, and to be honest, when he first made it on AI, I thought of "Bubba" from Forrest Gump. Of course, I only thought of Bubba because William Hung struck me as AI's own Forrest Gump, and he was such a big thing at the time. Of course, that was a lousy thing to think of George, knowing who he really is. I hope that even if he gets booted, that someone will pick him up and take him further. He would even be good in a sit-com!

I agree with everything you said 100%. I do think George lacks the confidence say that Latoya has. He is very humbled to be in the show. I am from New Orleans and we have been learning more and more about George as the weeks go by. George is Father is on dialysis daily, that is why you don't see him. they are basically a poor family from the projects. I think people get the impression George is gay or dumb or whatever but I think he rew up sheltered by his Mother to prevent him from getting into the kinds of things that most under privileged children do. He is extremely close to them. At least he is genuine and real. I do aree about Latoya, what was that all about telling Ryan that the husband can travel with her. The best line I heard is when Ryan asked her how would the children manage without her and she said something like well they manaaged before or the husband managed before. Sometimes you cannot be too confident in life, its good and actually George could use a little more but too much is not good. Diana just comes across as fake to me, that laugh.

Not that LaToya is my fav (Fantasia and George are) but just to clarify, LaToya has step-children, so when she said that her husband managed the children without her before, she meant before she came into the picture. IOW, he's been a dad longer than she's been a step-mom.Her coming across cold, I think, is mainly because she is the most mature out of all of them. Married with step-children, and the oldest in age. She's beyond all that giggly, fake Diana crap. But, she does need to step up her spark a bit to outshine Fantasia and George. I speak up for her only because she truly does have a great voice. Very professional. I agree that she will be better in the studio than live. Peace

InterviewsGeorge is interview challenged. He can't do much more than repeat the feeds Seacrest gives him. I think George is a good guy, but not the brightest bulb in the box. I like Fantasia a lot more after her interview. She has pep and seems sincere. I like her message for single moms - just keep on pushing. Don't look back. You'll get there. Jasmine - vacuous, silly, shallow. Diana - nervous, driven, young (not that there's anything wrong with that) La Toya - mature, sincere, confident

George is not dumb by far. He attends the University of Oklahoma with a 3.8 grade average. Look at your president of the United states when he is being interviewed. Stop being so judgemental on people if you don't know them and if you don't like him fine. Its obvious who you are pulling for. Your mature, confident vote for Latoya came across to many as "snobbish" so everyone has their own opinions.

LAST EDITED ON 05-04-04 AT 10:00 AM (EST)He/she never called George Dumb, just simply stating he is lacking in communication skills. Luckily, everyone knows to vote on talent, not how well a person interviews. Who cares who has personality? I personally will not go to the store to buy a cd based on whether a singer has a personality or speaks well in front of an audience. It depends on the music and how well I like his/her music. I think that Latoya had the worst interview, coming across very quiet and subdued, yet almost too confident. Still, I believe she is the most talented, therefore my vote will continue to go to her. Remember this is an opinion forum.

Thanks Kerawal.I think La Toya has the most talent as well. I also think she wants the AI title very much. She has poise and stage presence, probably due to her working in a band. I think she'll definitely be in the final two. My favorite is George, just because he's so different, but I don't think he'll be one of the last two singing. The only one I couldn't live with as AI is Jasmine.

Hi JoshIdol. I said George is interview challenged. Not one single original statement came from him. All he could manage was a rephrasing of Seacrest's questions. He may have a 3.8 average, but that doesn't mean he's able to think quickly and originally. It may mean he's one heck of a hard worker, which I don't doubt. It may mean he can spit back whatever the lesson is for an exam. It doesn't mean he's a creative thinker in an interview. To me, he was very BLAH and uninspiring. His nerves may well have gotten the better of him. That's not a judgement. It's an opinion. I like George very much, and he's my favorite. So it isn't obvious who I'm pulling for. La Toya *is* mature, confident, and sincere. That doesn't mean I think she has charisma. She's the most talented in my opinion, but the others outshine her in personality.

Thanks for interpreting but when one says "not the brightest bulb in the bunch" I always thought that meant dumb. I do think he is nervous, you have to realixe this guy and his family are poor, they came from the projects. His mother was cooking suppers and selling them to raise money to go to L.A. and see him. People at a bank in New Orleans heard about it and raised money for her to go out there. I truly think George still cannot believe he is even there and I guess the nerves come out sometimes. From everything I have read about him and what the other contestants have said, he is what you see, so at least if we see his nervous side and he is not artistic in an interview, at least its real.

I don't weigh alot of my opinion on how these guys came across on the Monday night special. I try to recall how they've been all along. This is the stuff from which nerves suffer. For example, I found Fantasia to be a bit more engaging last night, but most of the time she irritates me. Jasmine has yet to impress me. I love George, but I don't think he came across that well last night. However, I'll throw some votes his way, despite a couple of bad performances, because I really liked his other performances and I find him very personable. I feel very middle-of-the-road about Diana, performance-wise and personality-wise. While LaToya may have had a mediocre interview last night, I think she is the most talented and professional. I believe her personality has shown through in other segments. She will continue to get the most of my votes.

47. "Confirmed!!! Songs from the Big Band Era!" |
from E.T...When the five finalists perform on FOX at 8 p.m., they will be performing music from the Big Band era. Each of the contestants will be performing two songs, and won't receive their critique from the judges until after the second number. Diana will sing "Get Happy" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." George has chosen "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" and Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World." Jasmine will perform "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Almost Like Being In Love." Fantasia tests her pipes on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "What Are You Doing." And La Toya gets in the Big Band groove with "Too Close for Comfort" and "Don't Rain On My Parade." "Hopefully, the contestants are going to dress up," Paula says. "Also, they will be doing some banter. There is something very magical and charismatic when you sing songs from the Big Band era. It is enchanting and magical. My mom is coming down tonight. She loves this part of the competition." As the countdown to the selection of the next "American Idol" continues, the finalists are focusing all their attention on stepping up their game each week, as they know only one will survive. "It is getting down to the wire here," Paula adds. "They are getting excited that it is getting down to the end. It is only three weeks away and there will be a new winner. I can't believe it and they can't believe it. They are excited to get on with the summer tour. They miss each other already. They want to get together and get on the road. That is what they live for." For more "Idol" chatter, keep watching ET. Then tune in to "Idol" tonight for Big Band Week, which will be followed by DONNA SUMMER Week and then there is Judges' Choice Week. my six dif'rent flava

I agree about the song, but thought he sang it well. The judges are on ludes. Diana sounded awful. I have headphones on and I walked into the next room and she sounded very shaky on everything except the power notes. Power notes are easy, it's the quiet ones that are tough. She did NOT do good, I don't know what the judges are listening to. George was better than they gave him credit for. Not fabulous, but certainly not as bad as Randy and Simon seemed to think.

LaToya could be Broadway tomorrow. She could get booted tomorrow and be fine. Maybe that's the way I am thinking, and I suppose that's not fair to her.But yes, she's still boring. While there was a Big Band Era, the term Big Band actually denotes a genre.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_band A big band, also known as a jazz orchestra, is a large musical ensemble that plays jazz music, especially Swing. The band is divided up into a number of sections, by instrument; each section usually has four or more members. All bands usually have a rhythm section, made up of drum set, bass, piano, and possibly guitar. There are also sections for trumpets, trombones, and saxophones (who sometimes double on flute or clarinet). Sometimes there will also be a percussion section, especially if the band plays latin jazz or salsa music. Big band music peaked in popularity during the 1940s, and much of the best-known popular music of the era was recorded by them. The bands of Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, Boyd Raeburn, Paul Whiteman, Artie Shaw, Les Brown are amongst the best known. Big band music is still very much alive today, thanks in large part to the popularity of jazz ensembles at high schools and colleges around the world. Most of these jazz ensembles have the same instrumentation as the big bands that were popular in the 1940s, and they often play wide range of music from old Swing standards to new compositions and arrangements of new popular songs from big band arrangers like Sammy Nestico and Tom Kubis.

Hey monstah!! I soooooooooooo agree with you....this so called Big Band night was not what I expected at all.....I, personally, am not afraid to admit I was/am a John Stevens fan and hated to see him go before Big Band week...however, if I were him, I would be thankful to not be a part of that crap....=)

SHOUTING AMEN AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS.Whew. Feel much better. Can't believe Fantasia missed the opportunity to sing an Ella Fitzgerald song. Unbelievable. There are 3 decades of songs to choose from. An entire WAR was fought and won, and they couldn't come up with anything to sing. Just...unbelievable. My poor husband. This is his favorite era of music. We have a 10 cd set called "Songs That Won the War." 10 cds. Just from a roughly 5 year period of a much larger period of time. OK. I'll stop.

ITA, Shedevil! Maybe it was the fact that the words to the song could be something a mom would want to sing to their children, but I was riveted. I just watched and listened and was very impressed with her when it was over. I think it was as good as her Summertime, and she sang her butt off for that one. I think Simon meant to compliment her with what he said, as I could see LaToya on any Broadway stage belting it out, but Fantasia would be effective in a concert.(We gotta b*tch or we'll explode!)
