"Will Eco-Challenge be back?"
I know that last year's show was cancelled because of the war, but I'm hoping it will be back. This show is EPMB's labor of love, and one of the better shows out there (for the week it's on). It reminds me a lot more of what I hoped Survivor might have been if the focus has been more on the competitions than who could make more friends.

Anybody know anything?

I'm with ya, I hope this show comes back, its definitely one of the best reality shows. Usually, it was on in April-May so we should start to hear something really soon one way or the other.

Does anyone here love me enough to tape it for me? We don't get USA anymore and my husband and I love the Eco-Challenge. I didn't realize they cancelled it last year and I thought we missed it.

When we first started watching this show, I think it was on the Discovery Channel. It seems to me they showed more footage of the show than they do on USA. Is my memory failing me?

Nope, your memory is correct.

It was much better on Discovery Channel..they showed more actual race footage and more of the teams. On USA they focus on only a few teams.

You can buy tapes of some of the older eco-challenges on amazon (Morocco/British Columbia/Australia..etc..

Discovery HD Theater also used to broadcast an HDTV version of the show (and this was back when just about nothing was in HDTV)

I sooo hope this show comes back. It's the Grand Daddy of all reality shows. Grit, if it comes back I'll tape it for you.

Edited to add: I just went to Eco-Challenge.com and it said that there was no information regarding the future of the show. That doesn't sound good...

6. "Could be a victim of Burnett's success"
Back in the day, Burnett had two shows to focus on, Survivor and Eco-Challenge. Burnett is heavily involved in the production of both. Lately, he has turned over the reigns for some of his Survivor seasons to his production team so he can focus on his other shows.

Now, Burnett has several shows to work on.....The Apprentice, that boxing show, The Restarant. Burnett is not the type to give up control easily so it wouldn't suprise me if he is heavily involved in all of these shows which means that some of Burnett's other projects have to be sacrificed. I think Eco was cancelled last year cause Burnett was too busy with The Restarant and the Apprentice. Now, even with the restarant gone Burnett is still pretty busy year round with Survivor and the Apprentice.

I wouldn't be suprised if Eco has become a casualty of Burnett's success coupled with his huge ego that is too big to allow someone else to take over for him.

ON a side note, Burnett is definitely spreading himself too thin. He once had a reputation as the reality tv god, in that everything he touched turned to gold. That was when he was only working on Survivor and Eco. Now, his rep has taken a huge hit since he has been responsible for what could be considered the most vile reality show ever, The Restarant. Also, his Surivvor franchise has become stale and we all saw the debacle that was the Apprentice 2 finale.

It used to be that if I saw Burnett's name attached to a project I just assumed it would be great...now I actually assume it will svck, especially after watching heavily staged shows such as the restarant and the apprentice.

You forgot about The Casino - it made The Restaurant look like Shakespeare. Burnett needs The Contender to revive his reputation.

Depriving the public of my talent is letting the terrorists win.

The Casino really was bad -- although pesonally I suspect that Burnett wasn't involved with that show much more than slapping his name on it.

Maybe its because he's working with Hollywood heavyweights like Dreamworks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and sees it as the chance to break (really big) into the scripted business, maybe its because he's pissed at Fox and wants to take down Idol, but whatever the reason, Burnett really seems to be obsessed with The Contender for the last year or so -- and I think it's clear that Survivor and it's halfway-around-the-world filming requirement has suffered as a result.

He's definitely spread way too thin -- and while The Restaurant and The Casino are dead, doing the upcoming Rock Star and the Martha Stewart daytime show (although I personally doubt he'll have any day-to-day role at all on that Martha's show) isn't likely to change that situation. Frankly the best hope for an improvement in Survivor's quality isn't that Burnett frees up more time for the show, its that the folks he's handed it off to get better.

re: The Apprentice finale, I don't blame him as much for that, unless something has changed, Burnett typically farms the live reunion shows out to the types of folks who produce the live awards shows telecasts -- I'm not sure what his actual minute-to-minute involvement in those shows is.

Bump. I just realized that my favourite May activity...a week of Eco Challenge on the Discovery channel hadn't happened and searched for this thread. I can't believe that Burnett cancelled it. War, myass.

Any news for next year?

I just finished Mark's latest book, which came out at the beginning of this year, so it is pretty much up to date.

He talks a lot about the Eco-Challenge in that book, so you fans of the show (if you read) should check it out. The book is called "Jump In" fyi.

For those of you that don't (want to) read, at this point Eco-Challenge is on indefinite hold. Mark got very worried that someone was going to end up dead during the race, and he was getting way too busy to put enough time into the challenge. That's my short version of his explanation for putting the race on hold. I don't have the book with me to list all the reasons he gives.
