PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats, but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are encouraged to read the complete guidelines. As entertainment critic Roger Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

I had no idea of the feelings involved. And I apologize in advance for whatever I say that is insensitive. I try to be inquisitive, but I certainly don't like to offend, even unintentionally.

My friend was in his late thirties before he decided to get his, and I guess he would still be considered deaf as you say, but he can hear now. Much to the appreciation of his family, friends, co-workers, and I assume himself. Until I read your reaction, I had no idea that the CIs were anything but a semi-miracle for those for whom they provided improved hearing. I stand enlightened.

He never showed any sign that he considered himself to be part of the deaf community. As far as I know he never even learned sign language. He works as an engineering assistant. I and his other co-workers did have to make some accommodations for him, but that was just part of everybody's normal workday environment. We had to make sure he was looking at us when we spoke and tapped him on the shoulder whenever there were general announcements or fire drills (etc) were held.
