PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.
As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

How many of the contestants are going to eventually discover being on the show was the worst possible thing for their careers?Take Sam for a moment. (A moment may be about the limit.) If he's in charge of a company, I'm going to have some serious second thoughts before I apply to work for it. I've gotten a look at the personality heading up the projects, and I really don't want this person in charge of deciding whether I'm making a valuable contribution. Assuming he allows me to make any contribution at all. 'Okay, go ahead and make those sales calls.' 'No problem. Where's my list of people to contact?' 'You don't need to know that.' If I'm in charge of hiring and he's applying for a position in my company -- same thing. I have some idea of how he works under pressure and it's not exactly reassuring knowledge. Yes, I know about the power of editing, yes, he got on the show in the first place by having enough business savvy to succeed in prior enterprises -- but I'm still worried. Some of the others are going to create similar impressions on human resource departments across the company. (We could take Omarosa here, but she'd scream that we were being discriminatory in singling her out. So let's not.) And those who own their own companies may find it harder to conduct business dealings with other companies. Yes, some are going to wind up improving their reputations, and fan bases certainly do translate into the corporate world -- but others are going to make people believe the last thing they want to is enter a transaction with them. This show may turn out to be a double-edged sword for the majority of the players -- and the first thing cut is going to be their own throats...

I think this sums up Reality TV in general. Big winners can end up losers: Richard Hatch - he may have won the first Survivor, but was he employable after that? Alex Michel - he was the first Bachelor, and he was fired from his job as soon as they found out what he had done. Or they can end up with a great opportunity: Katherine (the first Mole) - she was hired to be a producer on the second edition of The Mole. Charlie (from The Bachelorette) - he got a great job with Extra. I could list so many more...

I would estimate a quarter of them really don't have a lot to lose reputation wise. And, for the most part, it is only the ones with nothing to lose that are making fools of themselves (I don't remember which of the women danced for the discount), it just seems like more because Sam and Omoronosa get a lot of air time. Sam is currently in a sales position in an internet publishing company (Potomac Tech Wire) which he owns a part interest in. He probably doesn't even make enough money from that company to pay his rent. His resume says he wants to be in talk radio, this show will actually increase the probability of that. Omoronosa is allegedly a pagent consultant, I'm sure that's big bucks-not. Krisiti owns a whole two rental units, and is part owner of a 'trendy' (aren't they all) resturant, I think the publicity of any kind could only help her business.

I can't remember how many people were reported to have applied for this show, I think it was in the ballpark of 80,000. Were these really the most promising candidates?

LAST EDITED ON 01-24-04 AT 04:06 PM (EST)..."I can't remember how many people were reported to have applied for this show, I think it was in the ballpark of 80,000..." According to Omarosa's web site (look in the "Bio" section), there were over 200,000 applicants, of which she was one of the 16 selected. Go figure. Hmm...just noticed something else on her site which may be a SPOILER....In her "Bio", after "The Apprentice" info, it say: ..."She now looks forward to pursuing a career as an author, orator and lecturer"... Hmm..Not exactly the type of job an apprentice for The Donald would do.

I bet 99% of the DAWS who apply and appear on Reality TV shows like this have no interest in returning to their previous careers. Hasn't it been painfully obvious that they all think this is a stepping stone to a career in entertainment field? The reward for winning this game? The Donald makes you the nominal (figure)head of one of his "companies" at a salary of $250K. For one year. Big whoop. Bet many of these folks will try to turn their appearance here into some type of business correspondent type assignment for a news/entertainment show. Maybe take advantage of the lecture circuit. At least this group seems to have some qualifications and previous success in their backgrounds. Many are self-employed so won't need to worry about getting hired on somewhere. But I agree. I think they'll suffer more damage to their professional reputations instead of the boost they anticipate.

I also think it depends on the show - how your edited- and you as a person. Take Jerry from survivor - edited horibly and actually had a decent career going as an acress before the show - and the show killed that. Now take Elisabeth from the same show - edited as sweet - nice (which I hear she really is) and her career has taken off.
