So true!!!...but the women were smarter, selling it for a higher price, keeping costs down (not as much product used) for a higher profit!!! At first it looked like the men were kicking @ss, getting all that free stuff and were much more organized! They screwed up picking a lousy location and selling it too low!

Hi, gman. Welcome to the boards!

Some of the tasks will be more female oriented and some more male oriented. This one just worked out better for the females because they were girls and the customers were more willing to buy from them.

I think the challenge was to make money selling lemonade and the rules said that the winners were the group that made the most profit. I think it's very fair.

I agree with silvergirl. And the men did try to sell sex: that twit Sam tried to get an average-looking girl to sell lemonade, but they failed.

Edited to add: I don't see how women have an advantage at selling. But it's nice to see that for once women have the upper hand! And until men get their periods, start birthing, have to invest in more than a few key pieces for business wardrobe, and earn a salary on par with their female equivalents, I say those girls should use whatever they've got to work with!

The men could have used sex to sell, too. Sam suggested they find a female aid -- got no support from the others. This is NYC, they could have worked the "pretty people" crowd in Chelsea -- the TV camera would be magnet. When they left the fish market for the West Village, they began to sell --- should have smiled more at the limo ladies heading for Tribeca.

A hearty welcome, gman, from one newbie to another. Glad to have you aboard!

I agree--of course it wasn't fair! But fair isn't in the rules, not in the real world, not in the business world and especially not in reality television. Ultimately, the goal here is to put fannies on the couches, rather than to find the best "apprentice," no matter what Mark Burnett might want you to think.

Do you watch Survivor? Last season, nearing the end, one of the contestents won a challenge solely because her hands were smaller than the others. And don't even get people started on the "purple rock of death." Fair? Absolutely not. But also not the point, either.

Hope you stick around! And keep on posting.

Yes, gman... you're just NOW discovering that things aren't fair between men and women? Hoo boy, you've got a lot to learn about life! (tongue firmly planted in cheek)

It's TV, it's Mark Burnett and it's The Donald -- The Trump isn't going to leave anything to chance, what he wants, he'll get while trying to make sure things are entertaining at the same time.

If the men used their sex appeal to sell lemonade down at the docks they could have won.

(But only if they include the settlement money from the beatings they would have received.)

8. "What the challenge was"
Let's be clear: the challenge was NOT to sell the most lemonade. The challenge was to make more profit than the other team. If the men could somehow have sold just two cups for $1000 each they could have taken the rest of the day off and still won.

My wife did some work for a guy that sold used Rolls Royces. He sold an average of just two cars per month, but the profit on each was so high that he made more money than before when he sold used Chevys. There are pros and cons to each strategy; one has to decide which to follow. But the goal in the end is the same: higher income.

Yes, the women had a natural advantage. As some have pointed out, the men could have done things to level the playing field, but the point remains that they had to do more just to get to an even position.

But as others have said, that's life, and it isn't always fair. I'm sure many women (my wife included) will say that it's long been the women's problem to make an extra effort just to get to an even level.

I bet some future challenges will be just as unbalanced in favor of the men.

9. "Marketing 101"
When marketing products one of the first things a company needs to decide is whether to sell high dollar products or lower priced products. High dollar products have less turnover and companies sell less product than lower priced product. Examples of the first way are Cartier, Nieman Marcus, Nordstrom's etc. that sell a lot of high ticket merchandise, but sell fewer products. The women chose this route and did very well because they added perceived value to the product (sex appeal) that made it worth more money.

Examples of the second way are Wal-Mart, K-Mart etc. that sell products cheap at a lower profit margin, but have higher turnover and sell more products. The men chose to go this route and although they probably did sell more actual units than the women, because they chose the lower price/higher volume strategy, their overall profitability was lower. It's not unfair, just a different marketing strategy that ended up producing a lower profit.

thankx for your input. my frustration centers around the inherent sexual bias with the first task.i imagine if the men were going to market ade long term, they would hire pretty young ladies as sales reps.i know the world is not fair;i know the good people don't always win;and i know you dont see many cocktail waiters selling drinks.i'm sure it will all work out.

thanks again

I don't think it was inherently unfair, sexually.
There are a lot of decent to good-looking men in that bunch.
Sounds like you think they were fat & ugly (if the women should have been to level the playing field.) You don't have to look like a model to be Sex-ay!!

They Chose Not to be sexy, as mentioned above. As an extreme,
they could have taken off their shirts & jackets and gone bare-chested (kept the tie, or gotten some bowties *wink*), and I would buy some Lemonade!!!

And if they weren't getting enough sales from the females,
they could easily take a stroll down to the Village, for the male audience.

Me? I wouldve been on top of the table singing my much-acclaimed version of "Big Spender".

Guess that makes me a DAW.

I bet fat ugly women would have sold just as much as the guys. (IE, it would not have been a blow out).

The bottom line is that the men didn't get creative until it was too late. The women went with their strengths, short skirts; the men went with their instincts and lost.

contest.the men were better organized, were more creative, and, they sold more product.the short skirts and pretty faces tipped the balance.teams with four men and four women would have given us the best game.

I like some of the suggestions here and I agree that the women did use sex to sell their product. I also agree that the men could have done the same thing. However, it is far easier for a woman to use sex with men to sell product than the other way.

I feel like women can convince men more easily than men can convince women!

Want to know how the men could have won easily?

1. Choice of location? GROUND ZERO. Biggest tourist attraction in NYC; located very close to Wall Street.

2. Approach? Use gender as a seller. Go up to well-dressed businessmen ONLY, and say, "Look, it's men vs. women, and we're selling lemonade for $10.00 a glass. If we win, we beat a bunch of uppity know-it-all chicks and one of them goes home crying."

I can guarantee they'd have made TEN TIMES what the women if they used that approach. Hell, every guy I know would have gladly forked over at least $20.00 if it meant the men would win against the women!

It makes you wonder what the ground rules are.

I would think that having Trump's sidekicks watching their every move prohibited some folks to really stretch his or her legs and thinking outside the box.

22. "Disagree"
1. Then how come Walmart is the largest / most profitable retailer inthe world?

WalMart is the largest because of its high volume per store. Although they've generated enough volume to overcome their lower profits per unit, I don't believe they're the most profitable in terms of profit per store, but I could be wrong.

Basically, the men were selling a product (the glass of lemonade) at its fair value. It's a good way to build a business, if you're starting from scratch, but they weren't trying to build repeat trade -- instead, this was a one-shot deal. Simply put, the men saw their business as selling glasses of lemonade; the women saw their business as selling whatever would make the most money.

The men could have won had they been able to generate enough business -- just as Wal-Mart does. But they weren't in a good enough location to do that. (I like the suggestion of "ground zero" as a selling point, BTW.)

2. How bout that guy Sam tryin to hawk a glass of lemonade for a grand? Not too bright.

As I said in the summary, I disagree. In fact, Sam was trying to redefine what his team was selling. Sam didn't want the team to be selling lemonade, and he wasn't really selling a glass of lemonade for $1,000. Instead, he was selling the opportunity to be part of the story of The Apprentice for $1,000. It sounded to me like he was doing a pretty good job of it, too.

Guess what? If someone had given Sam the $1,000, that person would have been featured in newspaper articles all over America last week. Would that be worth $1,000? To a lot of people, the answer would be yes. All Sam needed to do was find one such person.

Both the men and the women are idiots.

As someone else noted, sex sells.

It's NYC. The one thin you can count on in NYC is construction.

Since sex sells, the best strategy for lemonade would have been to obtain the finished product or the raw materials at as low a cost as possible, and then to have sexy, scantily clad women sell at inflated prices near construction sites.

Everyone on the crew would by.

You also create as many groups as possible to cover as many of the construction sites as possible.

After finally seeing the first episode I can only hope that there is a second season. If this is the quality of the competition, i have to play.

I will enjoy the rest of the season watching idiots and chumps.

You make good points, the central idea being that each team should do a better job at the start of each competition of developing a relevant business strategy. Your comment about selling lemonade to thirsty construction workers who want to ogle the women, although accurate, is limited in its practical application. Someone else on this site mentioned that the appeal of being on camera in front of a national audience could have been put to better use to sell lemonade, a fact that each team basically ignored. The men are not being mistreated, they just need to do a better job of communicating within their team and develop effective strategies to counter the women's obvious all-in-one marketing strategy of hip wiggling, top lifting and over-the-top flirting.

RE: men not treated fairly !

The bottom line: money. It doesn't matter how many cups of lemonade were sold. The objective of this task was to make the most money.

Sex (appeal) sells. “When you've got it, you flaunt it.” Welcome to the real world. The sooner you accept this, the better you will be prepared to understand how the business arena works.
