"What did Locke give to the island?"
Last night when Locke asked Charlie for his drugs (in return for the conveniently placed guitar) he said something along the lines of "if you give something to the island the island will give you something back." This made me wonder about what Locke gave and when. Just what went on during the solo encounter in the jungle with the mysterious creature?

I couldn't sleep last night, kept thinking about that too. Just why is Locke so aware of the island, it's beauty and all that is going on? It's got to be that he has some contact/connection/communication with whatever the island power is.

At first I thought he gave his life in exchange for a real chance at his own Walkabout, but since we really don't know if any of the survivors are alive or dead, it's not likely he 'died' again or is a deadman walking amongst the living. What if he's lending his body to the Mysterious Power (or even monster) for whatever purpose? In exchange he gets a sneak peek at the island and all it has to offer. With this knowledge, he can be in the right place at the right time - Charlie and the beehive, know where the guitar is, how to hunt the boars and feed the people, save Jack when he fell over the cliff etc. Since the Walkabout is all about living as one, in tune with Nature, gaining strength from the Earth etc, that's exactly the kind of trade he'd jump at. All it cost him was a body that was already broken back in the 'real' world.

Good theory.

I was asking myself the same question- all he has is a case full of knives.

I didn't think too much about it at the time because I figured Locke knows way more about that island than what we're being led to believe. I don't know if he even gave anything to the island...this could have just been Locke talkng stuff and trying to secure his place as the puppetmaster or something. I was thinking he'd found the guitar earlier and then once he found out that Charlie was a druggie, he'd string Charlie along to get him to ditch the drugs.

But if it's not just Locke being mysterious, then my initial thought is that he'd given up his soul. For what, I don't know. From what it looks like, his ability to walk was restored right away...so I don't imagine it was that. But who knows. This show is full of secrets/mysteries!

I guess it would depend more on what's really going in on that island (what sort of "force" they're dealing with). I dunno, cause I sure missed a lot having missed those first three episodes. I am kicking and cursing myself now for not watching this from the get go.

What if he gave himself to the island. Gave up his own being. Just seems like he now is the saviour to everyone.

6. "Agree..."
but this does not necessarily mean that it is bad. It seems like everyone(viewers) is getting a bad vibe from Locke and the island. I don't get that yet. Could be that some other force is evil and the island itself is good and protective.

Ooooo! I *heart* Locke too, Moonie. He has an aura about him. He seems so serene and all knowing. The way he handled Charlie's withdrawl was sweet but firm, sort of an island tough love.

a J Slice original. isn't she something?
