"TAR9 Casino Game - Recap and Results" |
An Exciting FinishWhew. What an exciting finish. BJ and Tyler sure did know their flags, which helped them win the million dollar prize. I'm a little tired of summarizing the episode right now, so you'll have to look elsewhere. Final Placements 1st place - BJ/Tyler (2x) 2nd place - Eric/Jeremy (even) 3rd place - Ray/Yolanda (0x) ResultsFirst of all, for the Bonus Game, you were supposed to guess which team would say the word "million" first. The word was spoken numerous times during the episode, but it was BJ and Tyler who said it first, right after they left the pitstop in Thailand. They were a generally popular pick, so many players gained a bunch of points. This week's final Greatest Gainer Award is shared by both taffnic and 5cats, who both moved up 12 spots this week. Nice job, you two. The final Perfect Bet Award was very competitive. A lot of big multipliers out there. Overall, girlgeek (2.45x) had the overall best final week, earning her the final PBA. Very close behind was Lasann (2.42x). As for the Final Scores and Placements... Well, I'll just let you see for yourselves. Here. It. Comes. Leaderboard 1. Neobie - 2220 2. Max Headroom - 0To put things in perspective, all of the players started with a mere 20 points. And you've turned them into hundreds and thousands. That's pretty cool. This season of the TAR Casino Game has been a roller coaster ride, with the No-Limit format. Early on in the game, there were several players who took an early lead and held it. It seemed that cracking the Top 10 would be almost impossible. Then, about midway through the season, BJ/Tyler were non-eliminated and Eric/Jeremy also finished badly. A lot of people's scores dropped, but many new faces made their presence known, and stuck around in the Top 10 for the remainder of the game. In the end, there can only be one true winner of the TAR9 Casino Game. And that person is, coincidentally, our defending TAR8 champion Neobie. This year was a little different for Neobie than previous years where he sat atop the Leaderboard every week. Neobie put together a long string of 2nd, 6th, and 4th place finishes, and even fell out of the Top 10 during the "Crash." But climbed his way back, and finally finished in 1st place when it mattered most. Congratulations, Neobie. You deserve it. Earning the Silver Medal is Higgs, who achieved something that no other player did this season. Higgs is the only player to remain in the Top 10 for every single week of the game. Do you realize how tough that is? You could never, ever make a strategical error. Higgs never fell below 8th place at any moment. For this amazing feat, you also earn the Eric and Jeremy Gameplay Award this year. Earning the Bronze Medal for 3rd place is bighair, another strong player from this season. Like Neobie, bighair only dropped out of the Top 10 twice, and quickly climbed out after that. Way to go! Other players who were perennial Top 10 finishers were: Higgs (11/11), Road Kill (10/11), Neobie (9/11), bighair (9/11), CattyChat (7/11), Yogi (6/11), redbaronii (6/11), Rhyn (5/11), bystander (5/11), Rothschild (5/11). Overall, 26 players cracked the Top 10 at some point during the game. That's pretty amazing. Some Closing RemarksI say this every year, but I mean it. I'd like to thank each and every one of you for playing the TAR Casino Game. I host the game and make up the puzzles, but it's you guys who play it. In short, there would be no game if it weren't for all of you. Every year, I wonder to myself when the bubble's going to burst and we won't have the 50+ players of previous seasons. And every year, you guys show up to play. You all seriously rawk. Every single one of you. I mean that. However, I can't make the game any better without feedback. To be honest, I was going to do the No-Limit format last season, but in the Feedback Thread, you all said that the game was perfect as is. So, if you could, answer the following two questions for me... 1. Do you prefer a Limit Format of TAR5 thru TAR8, in which I cap the individual bets? Or do you like this No-Limit format better? 2. In TAR8, there were numerous "cryptic" puzzles as Bonus Games, in which you had to cleverly solve clues and stuff. This season, I deliberately tried to focus more of the Bonuses on Casino-esque games of chance (PAT, Lucky 9, etc). Which type do you prefer? Or do you like a mix? Oh, and go read my TAR9 finale summary, "Million Dollar Hippies". That's why it took me so long to post this thread. I know this is a shameless plug, but it's my thread and I'll plug it if I want to. Again, thanks for playing, everyone! I hope to see you all next year for TAR10. I know that I'm looking forward to it. I tried to finish Top 10... But, considering the season I had, I'll take 11th place happily.

Thanks for doing such a great job, Jims! You're awesome! This game makes my life better. Okay, that sounded cheesy, but it's true. Ask my friends/relatives. I cried when I was eliminated...okay, not really. But almost. It amazes myself each week what this game does to me. Whenever I have a really bad week, I just feel ill when grading the entries. Sometimes, I'll put it off one day, just because I feel grumpy about my sucky wagers. Although I do enjoy embarrassing myself every single season, while I get whupped at my own creation. My friends just cannot watch the show with me, because I confuse them so much. For example, I didn't personally enjoy Eric and Jeremy that much, but I bet most of my points on them in the finale. So, while I was happy that the hippies won, there was a small part of me that wanted to see Eric and Jeremy pull through. While they were doing that flag task, I just let out a "Come on, Frat Boys!" My friends gave me a rather awkward look, right there. I should just bet on the teams I like, and avoid these dilemmas.

Grats to Neobie and thanks to Jim! Awesome win in an awesome game.As for your questions, Jim: 1. No limit is better. Allows more betting play, and gives you a chance to crash and burn in blaze of glory (ok, well, sorta). 2.I like the Casino-esqe bets over the puzzles, but you should have at least one or two solve-em type puzzles for the fun of it. Fantastic season Jims! The only reason I watch TAR anymore is to see how my bets payed off. Alas, like most other seasons, no limit or not, I suck. But it's still fun. Congrats to Neobie! You are a TAR powerhouse and shall go down in history as such! Now...as to the comments section... 1. Both versions have been fun. I remember thinking during the regular version I had always hoped to bet more. But, while playing the NoLimit version I wished that others couldn't bet as much as they could. So unless you come up with a version where only players that start with the letter "t" shall win, then I guess either version is fine. 2. I'm more for the Casino-esque type games. Then again, a cryptic-puzzle every now and again isn't hurting me, so bring 'em on! Sorry, I couldn't be more decisive. Doesn't matter though as I'll be here again next season regardless of how you host it. As usual, great job!

6. "Double reply about strategy" |
LAST EDITED ON 05-20-06 AT 11:16 PM (EST)(To cahaya and tribe) I feel similarly about the No-Limit format. I really, really like removing some of the red tape and just letting people do what they want. Wagering is much more free and dynamic. However, I had a general concern that one or two players would just take off, score 4000 points, and everyone gets left in the dust. Freeing up the points, I've noticed, spreads out the scores considerably. I didn't want people toward the bottom to get that "Screw it, I'm 950 points behind, so why bother?" mentality. That might make the game too daunting for some. But still, the No-Limit format has had some exciting rises to power, such as when ARNutz and Estee seized the top spots halfway through the game. That's always fun to watch. But I enjoy the Limit version, because I think it's a teensy bit more difficult. Since you're spreading the bets around, the 2nd and 3rd place payouts become more important to get ahead. It isn't just about betting on the "safe" team every week; you'll probably have to choose two or three, which is much more difficult to do. I tend to prefer the Casino-esque bonuses, myself. One of the focuses I always have is to make the game as easy and hassle-free as possible. You stop by, bet, and leave. Bing, bang, boom. It's so much easier to lay 50 points on a PAT bet than spend fifteen minutes cracking some cryptic code. But sometimes it's difficult to think of new things to wager on, so I throw in a few sneaky bonuses as well. I really liked the Lucky 9 bonus game addition, since it added a new betting dynamic. The more cryptic stuff is nice too, once in awhile, though. We shall see what I'm feeling like this fall.

It isn't just about betting on the "safe" team every week; you'll probably have to choose two or three, which is much more difficult to do.I like your reasoning for having it. Two ideas to accomplish this: 1. Rather than Limit at a set value (like 50), set it at say 1/2 or 1/3 of your total in the bank. If the Limit is too low, people with a lot of points end up banking a large amount. The fraction or pecentage methods gets around this problem, and will still force 2 or 3 bets unless the player wants to bank part of it. 2. The payout table for some weeks could be like (for 6 teams): 2.0, 1.9, 1.8, 0.2, 0.1, 0.0, or even 2.0 for the top half and 0.0 for the bottom half. This might encourage people to bet for 2 or 3 of the top 3. I love your game, thanks! An Arkie Asian creation, with Foo dog images by Bob.

Wow! That was pretty unexpected. Thanks to everyone for the congrats, thanks for the great and intense competition, and since you didn't forbid it this time, BIG THANKS to Jims for this wonderful game! Personally, I think that the no-limit style does seem to prevent players with less points to surmount crazy score differences, unless there are major screw-ups by the 'good' racers. How about keeping it flexible, where no-limit applies to legs where the outcome seems quite certain, and limit when there is no clear race leader? I'm a sucker for cryptic clues (which is quite why I got hooked onto TAR in the first place, when they had real clues in Season One) so I'm all for that. Casino style games are cool too, but I prefer to rely less on luck. Perhaps involve some skill in the luck-based bonuses, like the 'add up to nine' or the PAT where you can make some deductions, rather than stab-in-the-dark ones like the 'million' bonus? Great game that can only get better, thanks a billion Jims!

I really, really, really enjoyed this season mostest. Maybe that's because I was able to stay in it until the end this time. Thank you so very much for running this game again! It is definitely one of my favorite things about the TAR boards (of course, I lvoe the Lvoe List) Which bring me to my vote: A. No limit rocks!!! ...and B. Please no cryptic puzzles. I don't think I ever figured a single one out ferchrissakes! I was like you. Rooting for the team I bet on rather than the one I liked. I placed many bets on Eric & Jeremy because, how could you bet against them most of the time? Maybe I should've forgotten my finale bet like Vols did! ...then I'd have finished in 6th. Oh well! See y'all in the fall!

First of all, thanks for hosting the game. I know it's alot of work, and I appreciate it very much. This game enhances the enjoyment of watching TAR. Lastly, congrats Neobie! No limit RAWKS! I like the excitement of going "ALL-IN". I'd like a combo type of bonus game; mix it up. I love your cryptic games, yet I do like the occasional bonus games (i.e., PAT). This was my best year finishing in the Top 10! An arkiegrl siggie

Thank you for hosting this game Jims. I know it isn't easy.Congratulations to Neobie! I didn't play with limits so I can't compare but I think having to make more than 1 bet could help. As an example: Bet it all but be forced to separate it between 3 teams with no more than half your points on one until final 5. Maybe have some points you can wager on who will finish last? Puzzles once in a while could be fun. Thanks again for enhancing the TAR experience.

Woohoo, 4th place. I'm glad I went with who I wanted to win, it sure paid off here (though not so much over in the Survivor games for me )I had a great time playing this season, Jims, thank you for hosting such a fun casino. Since this is only the 2nd time I played this (last time I busted out within the first couple weeks) I am still pretty new to it. No Limit I think I prefer -- seems to make for an exciting game and makes people really take gambles. Both Puzzles & PATs I think would be good for bonuses. I like things that get the brain juices flowing, although I've never seen any of your puzzles to know how difficult they are. BUT I think it would help people stay in the game, especially if the concensus is the no limit. Mix it up and keep us guessing. Thanks, again, for a great season at the Casino. I'll be back next time to defend my Top Ten position. Kind Creation of ARNutz

A little late posting but want to say "THANKS!" again, Jim for hosting this fabulous game! As one of the 5 players (I think that number is correct) who have played each game since the start, I have to say that each season seems better and better (OK, I lied, the game that I WON was the best one!).Congrats too, to Neobie, the best player in the Casino! I have to really watch my "tells" when he is at the table! I enjoyed the no limit version. And I vote for it to continue. Like others, I was worried that a player or 2 would jump out to a huge lead and not look back, and for a while, when only the Frats or the Hippies were always in front, it looked like that could happen. But many early high flyers came crashing out of the game wagering on the Hippies when they started to wobble. Hopefully the next race will have more competitive teams and then "all-in" betting becomes much more of a risk.

24. "RE: TAR9 Casino Game - Recap and Results" |
It was my first season playing (and boy, did I get my @$$ kicked - 66th place~!) But I did lurk last season, so I saw the other format.1. Do you prefer a Limit Format of TAR5 thru TAR8, in which I cap the individual bets? Or do you like this No-Limit format better? The No Limit format is better. This season, it was harder to catch up with two clearly dominant teams; but as the week were BJT and E/J were the last two teams showed, it's all about risk and reward - even up to the ultimate risk and ultimate reward. I prefered the bonuses this season. PAT and Lucky 9 (/5/7/11) are both cool games that make you think about the lower-ranked teams, and they complement each other with one working for odd numbers of teams and one for even numbers of teams. The skill-based games of chance like that, like the 600 or 300 thing, are better than cryptic puzzles. I don't want to be losing sleep over a Casino Game puzzle >_> I sure took an @$$kicking, but I'm still ticking - and I'll DAMN well be back for Season 10.
