I think it's brilliant! Why menstrate unless you are trying to conceive. It's too late for me, but I would have gladly skipped the years of sickness and pain that having periods caused me. The article says there is a slight failure rate with the low dose BC pills, makes me think women would be more apt to use condoms, which is healthier for them as well. It's another choice, it's about time.

I agree with you Keith..this is not new...at all. I have been skillfully changing my period for years through extended taking of BC pills, or going for three months straight without stopping and thereby eliminating my period, all with my doctor's blessing and guidance and without any side effects whatsoever. I would have to see the drug combo, but I doubt this is significantly different than most BC triphasal combos.

Yay if it works for you. I used to be on Seasonale- only 4 periods per year. However I had to go off it because of the hormonal side effects.

yes Seasonale svcked- I was constantly spotting I'm now trying Loestrin 24 but my doc wants me off everything- she said I could try Mirena (it's an IUD with hormones) or uterine lining ablation- (not for the future fertile)

Your post reminded me of our Snow Leopards. They don't quite understand why, but the assumption is that it's weather related. They normally range in the Himalayas, with temps of 40F above to -20 below. In captivity the females stop ovulating completely during warmer months. But, during colder months they make up for it, going into heat every 2 weeks. It's made me at least wonder if human females have the same kind of temperature, or other, constraints that we just haven't recognized given our controlled environments. (Other animals, including PBs, have food/weight constraints that may also apply.) My guess is, yes. But, in our "advanced" society where we manipulate our environment, we'll never notice. In short, would it be unhealthy for a woman to hold her period in abeyance? Looking at nature, I can't think it would be. Happens all the time. Tribe sent springtime flowers! blogging's scary Now. How we're holding it in abeyance? That might be. There may be more natural ways. But none that I can think of that most women would welcome.

LAST EDITED ON 05-23-07 AT 11:16 PM (EST)I thought Depo Provera was the first product to knock women off the cotton pony. If it's anything like Depo -- no thanks. Depo was one of the factors that led to a complete physical, mental and emotional meltdown several years ago (one good thing came out of that period of my life -- OT. ) I loved the first two months. The third month was, well, let's just say it was an ewwwy mess and leave it at that. The depression and moodiness from the extra hormone pretty much finished the job. I will watch this closely. Nice to know they're researching things like this, when the erectile dysfunction and baldness studies are always in the news. ETA: This is just based on my own experience. YMMV. My severely disabled niece takes Depo shots because her having periods? Would be a nightmare for SIL. She does just fine with Depo. Rolly made this. Desperate Housecats
