PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.

Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

"burning OT questions from a newbie. . . " |
Well, hello there! I saw there were a lot of newbies (me included) springing up all over the OT board. Some may be long time lurkers (like myself) and some may be jumping right in. So I thought I would just get all my burning questions out there at once. There is a pop culture in OT all it's own, and even though I've been lurking, I still need some help. So what do you say, can y'all help a newbie out? Answer one or answer them all, maybe even some of the old-timers ( not as in old, just as in been around here for a while) can learn new things!1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie? 2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Thanks! Ready for fall, thanks to Sharnina!

>1. Bravie's nickname. When >you say it out loud >do you pronounce it B(rah)vie >or B(ray)vie? Well, she already told you. But I prefer to call her Knockers. >2. The Sharkie wipes. Definitely the Sharkie wipes. >4. How does everybody get >to be so dang funny >in these parts? Couldn't tell you. I don't think I'd be considered one of the funny ones. Loud mouthed, opinionated, and over sexed, yes. Funny, no. Talk to Estee. She knows funny. >5. Who is Shakes the >Clown and why do we >hate him? Shakes is a super duper special poster. He is our resident reality TV star. I don't think anyone hates him (at least, not on OT). But we are all just a little scared of him, I think. And once he flames you, as he surely will at some point, you'll understand. But I seriously adore Shakes. Plus, I think he's cute. *stands aside and waits for a flaming* >6. Have you ever had a >peep meet with someone? >Who? How did it >go? Oh, yes. I've met SilverStar, Asrai, Meemo, and Glow (twice for her, but we're practically neighbors). I have plans to eventually meet CSTL and, hopefully, Syren. I have also met one peep who no longer posts here, but many would remember fondly. He said to me, "That was you?" >7. Because we are OT! And we're special! Democrats make better lovers. Whoever heard of a good piece of elephant? Oh, we have our fights. But, usually, we find ways to argue without being personal. Sometimes we, in the heat of the moment, may feel it was personal, but in such cases, I have always found a PM from that person in my Inbox and we were able to kiss and make up.

10. "RE: burning OT questions from a newbie. . . " |
1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie?I, too, prefer "Knockers" 2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? A 'swoop block' is done by someone not eligible to swoop, but wants to claim one of the magic numbers...69, and multiples of 100. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part?
The Swoops candies 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? It takes years and years of practice and struggling to...ah, heck, it's a gift. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? Go hang out in the Big Brother forum. Just post that Will Kirby is NOT the best ever. Or go to the Sports Forum and say the same about Barry Sanders. Then hide and watch. And take NOTHING personally. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? Yep, I've met a couple. No one died. And I have a long list of peeps I'd like to meet, and a shorter list of peeps I would LVOE to meet. And an even short list of peeps I'd love to...well, you know..."get to know better". 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? Some are mis-typings that stuck. Some are in the language know as "Pooh Latin", for our beloved LisaPooh, aka Poho, aka Princess Pooh. Who ironically enough, is not that good at typing. And there you have it. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? Don't like 'em, but like a moth to a flame, there I go. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? It's a tricky process, developed after years and years of practice and struggling to...ah, heck, just ask. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.)
It's a nickname I've had for years and years that just kinda works for a screen name, too. 11. These two questions go together. It's taken years and years of practice and struggling to...ah, heck, it's a gift. Truly. It's a gift that so many diverse folks can come here and discuss hot topics without blowing the lid off this place, and a gift that we have Webby and the great blue peeps that keep us down to a simmer when boiling over is eminent.

1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie?
brave. she has brave knockers.2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'?
69, any multiple of 100. i believe also anything ending in 69 is fair game, like 169 or 269, but i might've just made that part up. a swoop block is like an OT c0ckblock... you ruin someone's day who is trying to score. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part?
firstly, it's a CRAP basket. what comes in it? CRAP! the best part: the CRAP! the real best part: when someone complains they never got one. UMMMMMM it's a CRAPbasket for a reason! 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts?
i think this takes practice. the ideal balance of being sarcastic, biting, and succinct. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him?
wannabe has-been ex reality dork who has a crippling mushy spot for big mangy dogs. *shrug* he's also got horrendous taste in sports teams. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go?
yes i met a few ppl... i met CantStandToLook, DebCapsFan, PepeLePew, PenelopeLePew, PippyLePew in Toronto. then i met Asrai and CSTL in Ohio. then i was at the niagara peep meet and met... well, everyone who was there. you can look at the archives for that whole mess. 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'?
Poho, poho, and poho. (lisapooh=queen of typos)
8. Political threads, love them or leave them?
treat them like my men: love them until i'm sick of them. then leave them. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender?
you can call them HE and have them correct you. but it's not recommended. i'm a chick. and i'm hot. (again, see archives) 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.)
there's a thread for this one, too. mine has to do with the penis game, but i'll let you go on an archive treasure hunt. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts?
follow the friggin guidelines and nobody gets hurt. oh, yeah, and i hate lurkers.
and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other??
one word: guidelines.

LAST EDITED ON 11-17-06 AT 04:02 PM (EST)Hi Pink! (can I call you Pink?) Looks like most of your questions are being answered already, so I'll just answer a couple. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? I have had the pleasure of meeting Bravie, JIMBO, SilverStar, Glow and MiamiCatt (not all at the same time). Once you get to know the peeps here on the board, meeting them is easy and fun. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? After observing for a while, one can usually pick up on this, but otherwise, ask in PM if you're really curious. I? Am a peach. My name doesn't give it away, but most of my sigpics do. 10. What does you posting name mean? It was a nickname my dad gave me when I was little. I was known for asking lots of questions, and just generally talking alot. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts?
Please don't flirt with any of the following posters; SilverStar MTW1961 RollDdice MRC CantStandToLook HistoryDetective Edited to add ~ Spanky! Or, if you really want to (which I'm sure wouldn't bother THEM), just be prepared to be *whacked* by me. Handcrafted by RollDdice MM <--selfishly calling dibs on other posters since 2004

LAST EDITED ON 11-15-06 AT 02:46 PM (EST)1. Bravie's nickname. It's WEINER...or even WIENER. 2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? I'm not a swooping expert, but yes, 69 & 100 are appropriate swoopages. I'd be a swoop blocker if I took 69 & didn't purposely "swooop," thus stealing the fun from someone else. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? What? You didn't get yours? The Sharkie Wipes are the most useful. Unless you are Nookie. Then the Depends are the most useful item. 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? Don't ask ME. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? Former real life DAW, current SB DAW. He used to be lots of fun, writing HILARIOUS summaries, giving some well-deserved flames out to dorky newbies and even some to the old timers. Then, someone sh!t in his Cheerios and he's just been ornry. I miss the Shakes of Yore. By the way, if he ever dishes it out to you, it's fair game to give it right back. It's a special "privelege" around her. Shakes gets to heckle, we get to heckle back. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? DebCapsFan was my first..we had dinner in DC. Then it was LionChow in NYC. We had fun with the traveling banana. Next was Dragonflies for a short visit to exhange some merchandise for the Niagara trip. Then it was Breezy in MI. She cooked us dinner and got us drunk. Then it was the BIG group in Niagara...total effing fun. Then it was my recent meets in SF with Bravie, Catt, Sharnina and MTW. Sigh. I miss them all. Not a bad peep meet in the bunch. ETA: I get to meet txmomma and sonya (some of you may know her) this weekend!!!! I'm a peep meet ho this year. Just try & stop me. 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? Long ago made typos that caught on as funny. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? Most political threads have the usual suspects, but sometimes we all jump in if it's an issue we care about. And Catt brings muffins sometimes. I think they are a great opportunity to learn more on all sides of the debate. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? I suck at that. I'm a girl. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) Maiden name mostly. I was never going to actively post on here, so I didn't choose anything clever. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Give me $10 and I'll tell you. and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? You haven't been around long, I see. I like to think those who have lingered here a long time have a high amount of tolerance...or are just a glutton for punishment.

Good questions.1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie? That's easy. It's Knockers. 2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? Already answered- I've never swooped though. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? Spam, of course. 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? I have to admit I love everyone's sense of humor here. OT makes me smile and snort everyday. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? Answered already too. Just don't say his name 3 times or he'll appear in this thread. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? Nope, never had the honor. 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? My favorite is carp. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? I read most of them, post rarely. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? One can never be sure- but I bet you can guess mine. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) Mine came from a time when I was emailing/instant messaging my dh overseas alot. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Have fun and just jump in. Oh and use smilies as much as possible. and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Because it's OT, of course! Phoenixmon's work!

5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? He's only scary the first time. After you flame him back you get over it. Send him cute pictures of kittens- that Shakes, he lvoes the kittens 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? Used to lvoe them more than I used to, I've decided after too many bruised foreheads I ain't changing anyones mind. I just guerilla-post when I can't take it anymore. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? Generally, if you've been around here long enough you'll know, if it's not obvious. Like me for example. Everyone here knows I'm a 6'10" Albanian cross-dresser. 10. What does you posting name mean? It ain't Keith Olbermann. Sure, the old Keith, when he did Sportscenter with Dan Patrick. Not the one who hates America.

1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie? ...but I like to call her a tainted milk drinker.2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? Here's a good reference: The SB/OT Handbook also look in the archives for a post titled "The Roolez" 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? A bunch of crap. Hence why it's called a crap basket. We don't actually consume the things in it, we just pass it along to the next peep. 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? It's the Kool-Aid. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? I don't hate him, so this is a false assumption. I don't hate anybody. Each person brings their own flavor to OT and without the posters as a whole, this place would not be so cool. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? I am the President of MOPS! 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? You might find some answers in the link in #2. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? I come to OT for fun. Not for headaches and seriousness. Pudding and puppy thresds are my favorites! 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? Look in the archives for a thresd titled "banana or peach". I think it was Buggy who authored that one. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) Again, I direct you to the archives. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? All question thresds are limited to 10 questions, in honor of idiotcowboy! That and never listen to MM, especially when she tells you not to flirt with peeps. *rolls eyes* She tries to claim all the hot men as her own. Bonus: ...because we're just that fvcking awesome, duh! Mmmmm... turkey!

That and never listen to MM, especially when she tells you not to flirt with peeps. *rolls eyes* She tries to claim all the hot men as her own.Hey, there are plenty of other hot men on OT! My chosen few were selected for very specific (and different) reasons. Why can't you just respect that? Note to Pink: If you *do* get a crush, watch your back. Nutz will be along shortly to try and steal them.

1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie?Bray, because that's what she does. 'Oh, God, go away' is also acceptable. And appropriate. And completely ineffective. 2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? As above. However, if you're going to miss a swoop, 73, 105, and 212 are the most humiliating. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? Don't ask me: I never got one. They're still hoping I'll take it as a hint. 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? Nyquil. Lots and lots of Nyquil. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? He's a cat. He never comes when you call him. There's been at least three times when I've tried yelling for him in his a crisis -- 'Shakes! There's a complete moron here and you're the only one who's allowed to openly tell him he's a complete moron! Get over to (fill in name of board) before the rest of us have our control slip and get banned!' And he never shows up. Hmph. What does he think he is, never delivering the goods when you need him most? A lawyer? 6. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? 'I can either learn to type or I can make my errors socially endearing. Let me think this over.' 7. Political threads, love them or leave them? They're usually pretty pointless for me. Most of the board knows I'm one of the quasi-moderate liberals, so my opinions on any political thread are pretty much on the record without having to say them. I have my political quirks, and there's areas where I agree with our red-staters -- but most of the time, I can register an invisible vote. Just like living in Florida. 8. How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? You can't. 'gen·der Pronunciation (jndr) n. 1. Grammar a. A grammatical category used in the classification of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and, in some languages, verbs that may be arbitrary or based on characteristics such as sex or animacy and that determines agreement with or selection of modifiers, referents, or grammatical forms. b. One category of such a set. c. The classification of a word or grammatical form in such a category. d. The distinguishing form or forms used. 2. Sexual identity, especially in relation to society or culture. 3. a. The condition of being female or male; sex. b. Females or males considered as a group: expressions used by one gender. tr.v. gen·dered, gen·der·ing, gen·ders To engender.
gender·less adj. Usage Note: Traditionally, gender has been used primarily to refer to the grammatical categories of "masculine," "feminine," and "neuter," but in recent years the word has become well established in its use to refer to sex-based categories, as in phrases such as gender gap and the politics of gender. This usage is supported by the practice of many anthropologists, who reserve sex for reference to biological categories, while using gender to refer to social or cultural categories. According to this rule, one would say The effectiveness of the medication appears to depend on the sex (not gender) of the patient, but In peasant societies, gender (not sex) roles are likely to be more clearly defined. This distinction is useful in principle, but it is by no means widely observed, and considerable variation in usage occurs at all levels. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition copyright ©2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company. Updated in 2003. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved.' That's my 'gender'. Of course, your definition may vary. 9. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) I just wanted something I had a chance of remembering how to spell at three in the morning. 10. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? PRE is wrong about everything. Ev-er-y-thing. and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Nyquil. Lots and lots of Nyquil.

1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie? I call her Bunkers. Or Krazy. Or B(ray)vie.2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? This has already been answered, but I would also add that it is considered poor form to "swoop" on a serious thread. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? Boxed wine! 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? We were all shot up with funny juice when we registered. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? No comment. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? Yup! I've met 12 people over the years, they were all great. 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? Already answered. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? Hmm. I usually leave them, but I do like to read them every once in a while. I usually end up learning something new at least. I'm much more of a shallow ender. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? Most are kinda obvious if you pay attention, but you can always ask. There have been a few that I've been surprised by. I'm a female. 10. What does you posting name mean? Nothing really. My favorite color is silver and I like stars. I'm clever! 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Have fun! and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? LAST EDITED ON 11-15-06 AT 03:52 PM (EST)6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? PRE was my first, then Weltek. But I've talked on the phone with Cyggie and most of the Niagara group. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? I read most, don't often post though. I've learned a lot from them. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? I'm really bad at that. So usually I ask either the poster or someone else when I'm in the bar. Oh, and I'm a girl. 10. What does you posting name mean? My first language is Dutch, and the Dutch word for dragonfly is libelle (lee-bell). I love that word. The single form was taken, so I pluralized. I am also known as df, bugmeat and rarely (lately) Less Filling. 11. Most of the funny lines have been stolen while I was at work.4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? We all used to listen to a lot of Steve Martin records back in the 70s. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? A Chicago Lawyer who gets joy from ripping people on the boards. I don't hate him. I've been praying for him, truth be told. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? No, but hopefully in the spring or summer next year I will. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? I usually stay out when I know I won't be able to do any good. 10. What does you posting name mean?
At first, people read kinky things into my name, but I chose it b/c I love the Little Rascals. I wanted Stymie (b/c he was the coolest Rascal) but didn't want people to think I was posing. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? The 1st three times you are so mad at OTers that you want to walk away forever...come back. After that, it's just self-mutilation. Welcome PSG. Not much point answering the general ones that have alrady been answered, so...6) Yep. I met Waterdrop when she came to the zoo. I was at the Niagara meet. And, just last week DH & I had dinner with Syren, CSTL, and all 4 of their adorable boys. (I got to meet the baby!!!! *squeal*) I've enjoyed every one of these get-togethers and hope to meet many more peeps as time goes on. 8) Depends. Don't necessarily love them, but I'm often drawn to them. I try to say my piece and leave, but I sometimes get drawn in more than once. 9) Ask, or pick it up from the various posts by/to that person. I think you already know that I'm a Peach. 10) Mystic is the Arctic fox I worked with at the zoo until she was shipped away to NC. Wolf is my maiden name and my favorite animal. 11) Read the archives. Fascinating stuff & it will answer a lot of questions. Bonus: Guidelines. Read 'em, follow 'em, learn to lvoe them. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? >> The best part *is* the welcome. 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? >> Familiarity helps. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? >> Few, if any, hate him. The better question is why does he hate himself? 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? >> Yes. Sherps, Lookeeloo, CSTL, Bravie, Ginger, Catt, Mystic, Maroonclown, Byoffer, Meemo, Weltek, Nolay, Arkie, Breezy, Nookie, Spunky, MM, MTW, CQ, Pene and Pepe, and I know I'm forgetting someone…my apologies. Political threads, love them or leave them? >> Leave 'em. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? >> General stereotyping. I'm a boy. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) >> My posting name means I'm not very creative. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? >> Don't let anxiety fool you into supressing who you are. Let it all hang out, and have fun! When you only interact with people on adversarial terms, it is easy to de-humanize them from your POV. However, when you start out knowing a person is real, independent, has substance to who they are…it seems more difficult to keep up the façade that your POV is absolute. I found the mix of personalities here the greatest draw, and one that makes it extremely difficult to interact with and NOT come out with a more open mind. Not that an open mind requires acceptance of "everything"…just that you understand differing perspectives in a new, better, almost freeing light.

As a fellow relatively new poster, I loved..er.. lvoed that you asked these questions!I also lvoed reading the answers already posted! I only have a few things to add that I have learned in my time here. 1. Bravie's nickname. Check out the "worms up the áss" thresds in the archives for additional Bravie (rhymes with Gravy) info. 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? Oh, the Crap Basket aka Carp basket? A bunch of inside jokes and historically relevant items. Over time, I have gotten the backstory for a few! 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? I wish I knew. But if Estee recommends the Nyquil, then that is what I will try next. I am a Estee fan but too shy to actually post and stalk her properly. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? He's a jackáss who comes in handy now and then to say what must be said to those who need a jackáss (although innocent bystanders feel his forked tongue as well at times). Personally I think he enjoys being thought of as a jackáss and if we ever start to feel something positive about him, he quickly will remedy the situation to perpetuate his Jackassitude. 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? I just wanted to comment that the explanation of "Pooh Latin" made the most sense (and made me laugh the hardest!) 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? Just thought this was a good place to thank Webby for enduring them and letting us have them despite the bamboo under fingernails task of monitoring them. I like them since I learn a lot! Smart peeps here present great info, fun commentary and make election time more bearable! 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? Um, after awhile you can often figure it out by reading posts but not always...so...ask in a roundabout way? Really, I dunno. For some reason I thought it was interesting when women posted using names that would easily be assumed to be male monikers. Not sure why, but I liked that it challenged me to not assume anything. I am a peach. 10. What does you posting name mean? I like the name Denali after the national park in Alaska and I am not sure why I added an o. It's a name I used to register on Neopets and it's stuck. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Not advice but some more answers to questions you did not ask The Lime Helmet - given to those who start a new thresd on a subject that is already being discussed in another thread. All things "Q" - used when posting to or about Canadians. i.e. Frisque was in the marquet. (Ok I may have that one a little wrong.) Threadkillers/Monster threads - and keeping count of these kinds of things. An indicator of serious DAWness in all it's glory! Invisible text - not used so much since Hawkeye does not post as Hawkeye anymore. But one that I always thought was so cool! But then I love secret spy stuff too! How to do it? Hit reply with quote and copy the code for the font color below! Insert invisible words here Chats - Where the real dish is served! Hot and cold! Bring your own Nyquil! Bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other??
I agree with you here! I came for the Survivor boards but I stayed because of OT. It's magic here and I, for one, feel blessed to have found this place.
I enjoy the political threads but lvoe the pudding and puppy threads too! OK..after much previewing and fixing... now I have a question - how does one circumvent the filter for the word áss? Or am I not supposed to know?

Um, no actually. I'll PASS at anything where I am BEHIND Bravie. I may be new here, but that is one thing I have figured out for sure! You can be behind Bravie and I'll be right behind you, Pink! Yeah, um, right behind ya (only if the wind is BLOWING toward Bravie!)
Wow! My first post teasing Bravie! I feel so special! I think it's an obligatory rite of passage here at OT! *smooches Bravie*

Since some of the peep-specific questions were answered I'll just work on ones that apply to me/or are general enough in nature I can make them all about me 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? Because we are all witty and intelligent people For me some of it comes from my family. A lot of humor growing up probably rubbed off. I also have always liked comedy and satire. I even took a college class in Satire and managed to get a B even though I was the only science geek in a a whole class full of english majors. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go?
Sadly, no. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them?
I tend to like them. Mostly because I learn a lot on them. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? Looking for clues like DH or DGF (Dear, or Darn, husband or girlfriend) can clarify that. While it may not be as reliable who posts on the Bare Minerals Cult thresds sometimes clarifies things. Otherwise ask. I'm female, but my writing style, probably from being a science geek, tends to come off as male a lot of the time. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) Snidget is the bird that was used originally when wizards first started playing Quidditch. The birds were replaced with a winged ball called a Snitch when the birds became endangered. My real last name is a small bird in the old country so a bird name seemed to fit, and I read Harry Potter books and well... 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Be yourself, have fun, and don't take anything too seriously. and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Well, the blue peeps make a difference on that. Totally unmoderated boards can get really nasty really quick. I think the advice from 11 helps a lot, especially not taking yourself too seriously. Really, the world will not end if someone has a different opinion than you do, but I have met people in RL and online that really do think that their life depends on making sure the only opinion is their opinion. Really, you heart will keep beating and your lungs will keep breathing if someone refuses to agree with you. Honest.

4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? I'm not the one to answer this since any time I try to be funny it tends to be misunderstood.8. Political threads, love them or leave them? I'm afraid I'm often drawn to them like the moth to the flame. And just like the moth I inevitably get myself burned. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? Very often you can't tell. And some prefer it that way. 10. What does you posting name mean? I live in Arizona and I was born in August. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Don't take anything personally. At some point you will probably find yourself doing so, in which case I usually just step back and lurk again for a bit until I can't resist the urge, usually a political post. and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Like the funny question, I'm not the person to answer that.

Thank you , thank you, thank you..for asking all these questions that I have wondered too. I too have been lurking for years..and didn't get the nerve to start joining in until the second Rock Star came on and I just couldn't resist any longer.I had no idea what a swoop was, so I am so grateful for you to have the nerve to actually ask all these questions that I was wondering as well. Have a great day Pinky! My burning question...is how do you make a siggie? Do you have to make one in graphics and then import it? ?????

Hey there -- any welcome to the boards. May you never get bored here.1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie? As a true Dodger fan, I try not to say that word. 2. On what number is it appropriate to post a 'swoop'? I see 69 and 100 are possibilities, anymore than that? And what is a 'swoop block?'? Never heard of it... 3. What all comes in a welcome basket, and what is the best part? The best part is the giving, of course. So pass it on, kid. 4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? Parts? Who's parts are you talking about? 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? Shakes is just the bestest nicest coolest mostest understandingest DAW we have. Everyone just lvoes him to pieces. 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? My one and only peep meet was with Puffy -- right before a Paul McCartney concert. She's great. (and I said that with her hubby right next to me, too!) 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? I doen't get yore meaneng, nobsody ever splees things wongr here. Wev;e got a storng an whell armmed gramer cop on staph, two. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? Meh 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? Ich bin ein Banana. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) I first joined RTVW when my fav series "The Mole" was still alive. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Never, never, ever take anything you read here as either the truth or seriously. and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Because they're dolts. (and that's the truth!

>7. What are the origins of some of the commonly >accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? This is the only one I feel like answering right now. I believe 'lvoe' and 'thresd' were both VampKira (pronounced "Kyra', not "Keera") originals. She was the first poster on this board to make it to 2000 posts ... a long, long time ago. Another one of hers that fell by the wayside was '88888' (with more or fewer 8s) -- which she'd often post during chat, probably because she was falling asleep. When we wanted to tease her, we'd end a post with '88888' -- and we'd almost always get a response. I think 'gellus' went back way before S4, because it was already in use at the start of S4 -- see this post. I thought it was from a stray poster on the Love Cruise boards -- the same one who tagged Lisapooh ("The Great Entity of the Thread") and dangerkitty ("Goddess of Words") with their titles.

Actually, the 8's were what happened when her finger slipped off the shift key when typing stuff like *****my***** and it showed up as *****8***8*8888*my88888***8*88*** instead. Typing 888888 was just making fun of another one of Vamp's typos. She hated the 8888888's because she used ****** around almost everything.

1. Bravie's nickname. When you say it out loud do you pronounce it B(rah)vie or B(ray)vie? I pronounce it "old fart" 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? I've had a few. Nookie, Vols & Farmboy. Ballerina of Doom. Asrai. frankz. CSTL. Batts. MiamiCatt, Jimbo, Bravie, Breezy & Nookie(again). 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? pass 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? What's your gender? I think if you do a personal exam, then you can figure it out. I'm a peach. 10. What does your posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) It means I have zero creativity and originality when coming up with screen names. "arkie" = person from Arkansas "grl" = I'm female, and I couldn't use just "arkie" because that was already taken. 11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Just remember, that's not pee. and a bonus question: How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Have you been on the AI boards? Syren rocks.

I can finally add to this thing now that I'm at a computer that is big enough to open this thread without getting a hernia. 1-3. Even though I haven't read all of the posts, I'm sure these got answered.
4. How does everybody get to be so dang funny in these parts? We're not. We just think we are. 5. Who is Shakes the Clown and why do we hate him? Who? 6. Have you ever had a peep meet with someone? Who? How did it go? Have not had a peep meet, even though Denalio and I live only a few miles apart. Looking forward to hooking up with Couch Tater when she pops by for the holidays. Lots of people live just to the north of me, so I hope to do a Pacific Northwest peep meet sometime. 7. What are the origins of some of the commonly accepted misspellings like 'lvoe' 'gellus' and 'thresd'? I? am a spelling god. Misspellled words dont even entre my vocablary. 8. Political threads, love them or leave them? Unless I want to take an extra Valium, I leave them. Life's hard enough. 9.How can you tell someone's gender besides asking? I guess. Been wrong only a couple times. What's your gender? Neither. 10. What does you posting name mean? (The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands plays a pink sparkly guitar. That's where mine came from.) I had a great childhood in Eastern Oregon, most of which is covered with sagebrush. Hence, the name. I also like its aroma.
11. What's one piece of advice for us that are new to these parts? Give me money. Lots of money. How come, when most people I meet are incapable of discussing politics and/or religion without relationships being ended, there seems to be a high amount of humble, well-tempered, loving people here that can disagree on some things, and still be respectful towards each other?? Which is why I don't participate in political threads. I am not humble, well-tempered, loving, or respectful. The hills are alive with the sigs of Tribe.
