I think I want to have my hair highlighted. I deserve it, after all. But how often will I have to have this done? I color about every 6 weeks. Will I ruin the highlights? Could I just use a lighter homecolor and get the same effect? I tried that L'Oreal kit and wasn't thrilled with it. There's only one red option and it wasn't my best shade. Also, what kind of shaving cream do I need? I've been using shower gel, but that's a PITA and too expensive. I'm trying to be thrifty these days. Have you tried the Double Extend Mascara yet? Do so. You will thank me. I promise. I need a new perfume. Something floral or light. I love Beautfiul and Escada's Ibiza Hippy, but I need soemthing cheaper. What do you recommend? I also need a new sugar scrub since my source is no longer making it for me. What's good and cheap and moisturizing? I'm developing crows' feet--what the hell do I do about this? Miscellaneous Ramblings --All replies appreciated and duly noted.

Not sure about highlighting. Have dyed once, and it worked pretty well. It was L'Oreal Intense Red Copper. Was that the one you used? Not sure about shaving cream either, but you should use a Venus razor. I love mine. Perfume-I am currently a fan of Happy Heart and CK Summer (CK One's cousin) But I don't know that they are all that cheap. Okay, after looking at what I wrote I have realized that I am useless. Totally useless. No need to appreciate or note this uselessness. (Note that I still hit "post message" though. Such a DAW.) Slice and Dice Chop Shop 2004

Getting wrapped all up in you and blocking everyone else out? I don't know anything about that. I just have busy days at work and only post sporadically in the evening and then decide everyone is ignoring me. I obviously don't think it's all about me or anything...

Well Immuny I felt obligated to show you that you are not useless, I am. I have never highlighted my hair. I buy the cheapest disposable razors, the kind that comes in packs of ten. I have never use shaving cream I don't wear any perfume. How that for useless? I won't have bother posting this useless post, but I got the feeling that Kim said it was ok and I wanted you to know that I am more useless than you. Deonna

Highlights: Can't help you there. Never had them but I'd love to try them. I'd like to see what answers peeps give you.Shaving Gel: Skintimate. I always go for the inexpensive stuff. This one has 33% more than the regular size can. They also come in nice scents. The one I'm using now is Pear scented. I also use the Venus razor. Double Extend Mascara: No I haven't tried it but I will get some this weekend on your recommendation. I don't know about floral perfumes. What the heck is a sugar scrub? LAST EDITED ON 08-18-04 AT 10:20 PM (EST)I'll look for the Skintimate. I think I have a coupon. 33% more is almost always a good thing.Oh, and don't get the brown mascara unless you like the "natural-she's not-wearing-any-mascara-so-why-did-she-pay-$10-bucks-a-tube?" look. I much prefer the brown/black. Not harsh, but adds definition and pop. Sugar scrubs are body scrubs with sugar in them as an exfoliant. They're lovely. --smooochy right back at ya, nookah!

Skintimate rules! If you have a Sams, they frequently have them in a three pack (one of each scent) for roughly $1.50 less than buying them individually. Even better, you have an extra on hand when the one youre using empties out after shaving just one leg. I have a recipe for a great sugar scrub somewhere, let me try to dig it up. Highlights...YES. Professionally done only. That crap is really hard on your hair and its really easy to totally fry strips of your hair. (and THERES a pretty look) There are salons who will do a few foils (I pay $2.00 each) to let you see how you like it. Coloring over really doesnt effect it. The highlighted hair is already lighter than the rest of it. So while it will darken your highlights, they wont be as dark as the rest of your hair.

Let's see...I have my hair highlighted about every 10 weeks or so (depending on the cash flow ) I think it changes the look enough that I don't need color. And yes, I think adding color ot your highlights would damage them. I've been using that (shoot, can't think of the name) razor that has the cartridges that has the soapy/cream stuff on the cartridge. Of course, I had a free coupon and they are expensive as heck, so I don't know if I'll buy more. But they are pretty awesome. I have not tried that. THe last mascara I bought was from reflect.com I lvoe it. Pefume? May not be much help there. Damned allergies. However, I do like Shalimar, but that's not in the cheap range. I've got some coconut lime stuff from BBW *giggle* oooh I just remembered, Body by Victoria - I loved it. However, there we go again with the - not exactly cheap. Sugar scrub? Where were you getting it? I liked Bath and Body Works stuff. I don't know that I have tried anyone elses. Have you used salt scrub. That stuff can sting Crows feet? I say cut 'em off and feed them to your PITA students...oh, not those kind of feet? I have no opinion or advice on the hair color, mascara or sugar scrub issues.Plus I only use soap for shaving so I'm proably no help there. But perfume? I really like Clinique's Happy. It is very light and actually happy. How DO they bottle happiness? I, for one, would like to know. Handcrafted by RollDdice

As far as shaving creams, I switched to the Intuition razor with the shaving soap block attached and I like it for the most part. The head is a little bulky for getting around my ankles though so I tend to miss hairs sometimes. I may switch to the Venus when I'm out of blades for the Intuition, since its gotten such rave reviews on here. Before I got the Intuition, I went back and forth on shaving creams. If the Skintimate was on sale or I had a coupon, I'd get that. Otherwise, I'd get a can of the same shaving cream that DH uses which is like $0.98 a can at Walmart.I started selling Avon a few months back so all my beauty products tend to come from there nowadays. They have some nice perfumes which are usually less than $20 a bottle and if you buy at the right time you can usually get a matching shower gel or lotion for free. As far as scents, my favorites are Smile, Dreamlife and Haiku and they're all really light and fresh. Right now, I'm wearing Sanctuary Kiwi+Lotus pefume by mark (a new line of makeup by Avon) which a customer ordered but never paid me for, so I was stuck with it. Fortunately I really like it. The entire Avon Anew facial products line (which has products for wrinkles and crow's feet and such) is really popular and seems to work pretty well. I don't know about sugar scrubs, but I used to use Bath and Body Works sea salt scrubs and they worked pretty well. Speaking of moisturizing products, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new Oil of Olay Moisturinse in shower moisturizer stuff. After you wash up, you slather some of it on, rinse off the excess and dry off. It's like conditioner for your skin. After only a few days my skin is a lot softer and definitely moisturized. I HATE putting on lotion, so this is the perfect product for me. I highlight and colour my hair. My hair is naturally dark brown, but the grey (actually, it's white) is getting really bad!So, my hairdresser colours my hair light brown, then gives me blondish highlights. Every 8 to 10 weeks I get the roots coloured light brown and the highlights done again. It seems to get lighter and lighter each time. The colour is permanent. She does foil highlights, which I highly recommend. I wouldn't put that cap on my head if you paid me. I recommend professional colouring/highlighting but I know lots of people don't like to pay that kind of money (mine costs $85 Cdn. a pop). It's just that my hair is so huge that a little mistake would be, well, huge. I think the perfume you are looking for is Gardenia by Crabtree and Evelyn. It's light and floraly. Thanks for the mascara tip. I shall try it. Oh, and shaving? I use a bar of soap and one of those cheap pink Lady Bics. I spend my money on my head hair, not my body hair. Crow's feet are because you are smiley, which is a good thing. Slice n' Dice's Sigpic Chop Shop 2004

26. "Another sensitive girly question" |
I used to get professional color and highlights-- I got a dark-ish brown color all over and golden highlights. This was pretty, very expensive, and hard to maintain. I usually let things go too long (my roots are going very grey despite the only being 30 thing). Once my conscience kicked in and I couldn't handle spending so much, I started buying do-it-yourself all over coloring kits. My highlights (both those leftover from the Salon and those that I got with a DIY kit) stuck around pretty well even though I did an all over color. But, keep in mind that when you color over highlights, those pieces will take the color differently and going red over blond-ish highlights sounds like it could tend dangerously toward pink. I'd just ask your professional. The only problem I found was the $$ because the look was so hard to maintain. My embarassing girly question? Have any of you tried the girly patch yet? Not the smoking patch, but the other kind of patch you wear on your butt, etc.? I'm thinking of switching over to eliminate the pill a day burden, but I don't know anyone who's tried the patch. Anybody have any first-hand info? Thanks! I love girly threads! Handcrafted by RollDdice

I haven't tried the patch, but my old roommate uses that instead of the pill and I know that she loves it and hasn't had any problems - she's been on it for about a year and a half now. Maybe that's not firsthand, but it's as close as I can help ya with

My hair grows too fast to get highlights in it. When my hair was short and layered, I was getting them cut out every other month, then getting them put back in. Right now I am in the process of growing out my layers, so I won't get my hair highlighted until it's about all chin length. For now I'm content with my "natural" highlights. Grey hair -- nature's own highlights. *sigh*I have not tried the Double Extend Mascara, but I think I'll be rushing out tonight and buying some. I love getting new makeup. As to body scrubs and perfume, I'm a huge fan of philosophy products. http://www.philosophy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001 My favorite perfume is philosophy's Falling in Love. Not so much on the cheap side, but it's fabulous. I also am a fan of their Amazing Grace. Sometimes you can find a great deal on the philosophy line on eBay. I'm all about the Venus razor too. My skin is fairly sensitive, especially after shaving, so I use Aveeno Shaving lotion with Oatmeal. Not cheap, but it's worth it to me. Kim --- Summer is almost over. I promise.

It works great, but it's kinda spendy and only available (AFAIK) from http://www.slumberparties.com Perfume? Ugh. If you don't have to have it, please don't. Save our olfactory nerves. LAST EDITED ON 08-19-04 AT 08:03 AM (EST)Botox for crows feet, then treat yourself to a lovely lunch in a posh restaurant with a few friends. Go for the highlights. You only live once! Then after, treat yourself to several drinks in a posh bar with a few friends. Perfume: Clean. It smells like soap...fantastic. So it's $190 an ounce. You deserve a treat. L'oreal makes the most fantastic foundation. True Match. But upgrade to the Lancome version because you really wouldn't want to hold yourself back. (why does this sound like a plot from sex and the city......or an episode of martha stewart:living......) *changes channel to newhart* Then, when you're done with all that, take a weekend off to a place in the country where you can sleep in, and wander the apple orchards before being served a perfectly seasonal treat over tea in a lovely b&b with a few friends. this is the reality that happens in my head....except for the tea part...and the friend part...and the weekend in the country...and the spending money...and sleep.... ps, true match foundation really is fantastic....

If you want highlights and also want your hair to remain Feisty Pumpkin-ish, I think that's where the salon thing comes in. I don't know how easy that's going to be to do at home.I like the Skintimate line of shaving creams -- they also have an after-shave cream that's nice. If I wear mascara it turns out very Clockwork Orange. Also not a good look. I don't wear perfume, so I can't help you. I've been known to use vanilla extract, though, and that's pretty cheap. What's a sugar scrub? Crow's feet...yeah, pretty much moisturize, retin-A, and stay out of the sun, unless you want to go the Botox route. So not a girly girl

Well, since we are talking girl stuff.I need to do something with my hair. I have no style, just get it trimmed every once in a while. I have thin flat hair and the long straight look isn't for me. I HATE MY HAIR. And, to top it all off, I fear hairdressers. Always have. However, with my 25th high school reunion coming up next year, I need to start thinking about updating my do. I was thinking of getting a layered cut. However, I've heard horror stories of layered haircuts. Is that just when you are trying to grow them out? Would a layered cut make my hair thicker?

Nookie, your long hair is gorgeous, but if you are thinking about a layered cut you should try it! Keep some of it long, maybe the longest layers rest on your shoulders nicely. You will get a lot of body from layers, and just using a vented brush with hairdryer you'll be able to curl the ends a bit.Wheezer

Kimmmah, make your own sugar scrub. It's cheap and easy.Use raw sugar (it usually comes in a box and is brown). Add 2 parts light olive oil to 1 part sweet almond oil (or grapeseed oil or apricot seed oil, whatever you can find). Then add whatever essential oils you want to make it smell good. You can also add fresh herbs to it, like rosemary for something more astringent or marigold petals for softness. Store it in a tightly lidded plastic container for up to 3 months. That's what I do, it's so much better than anything that I could buy. Expect what my smell friend Keridwyn she makes great stuff. --loves all things that smell good
