"SYTYCD - Canada - Season 3 around the corner"
Woot! Less than 2 weeks away, starting Sunday, August 15.

And for those who can access this, here is the promo vid featuring Niko (winner of first season) and Tara Jean (winner of second season).

Somehow this season in the US lost its luster due to injuries, so I am hoping that the Canadian version brings back the joy.

Couldn't see the Promo -- I'll bet it's the old U.S. can't see Canada videos thing again. I hope to find the show on the internet again this year. I loved watching Tara Jean last year.

Camera work is driving me nutso because I think we are getting the crew rejects from SYTYCD USA. I really, really, really do NOT need to see the judges reactions as the dancers are auditioning.

I've found the focus on the judges odd also. There was one camera angle which was from back stage and had the dancer in the shot, but the focus was on the judges. huh?

I think they have made some very strange choices of who they have put through to the finals. Do a belly dancer and highland dancer (or whatever the rigid-body guy was) really have a place on this show? Or are they putting them through for political reasons? I love the guy on crutches, but are they seriously putting him through? Invite him to dance on one of the special shows (like the finals) but he can't actually compete on the show.

I hate the auditions every year. Give me the top 20 and I am happy. At least Canada seems to blast through the auditions.

12. "Top 18"
I've been mostly watching this season but can't get into it. I'm starting to tell the contestants apart and am getting people I like and dislike but I'm still not eagerly looking forward to each episode.

Perhaps it's Leah Miller (who's terrible and did something to her lips that looks a little scary), perhaps it's all the product placements or perhaps it's that our judges can't critique worth a darn and they all keep saying "I love you" to each contestant or even the inevitable exhortations to vote. Please! You're turning me off. Maybe I'm just busier than last year, though, I think overall, the dancers this year aren't as good as last year.

That said, there have been a number of good routines. The bollywood from week one was a refreshing change from the nearly identical bollywood style that is done in the US shows was one. I've consistently liked Sean Cheesman's routines. (Last year's St. James' Infirmary piece was especially fantastic)

Ah well, maybe it's dance overload. I'll still watch and hopefully, I'll have someone to root for. I know that I lost interest in Season 7 when Alex left because I no longer had a favourite to cheer for, so maybe it's that.

Because TELUS massively sucks (I am surprised they don't implode on themselves with their suckiness), I am still without TV -- 48 hours and counting. What's been happening, any thoughts?

It better be fixed by tomorrow, Survivor time or there will be supreme hell to pay

The performance show started off well.

Claudia & Edgar's mambo was very entertaining. Edgar pulled off all the humour elements very well (things like completing a trick and then looking at the audience and winking making everything look nonchalant.)

Nathalie and Mackenzie were good. Not sure why Nathalie was supposed to be Mia though. I'm not overly fond of them as a couple but they are certainly talented.

Amanda & Denys had house. This routine felt a little uninspiring for me. Yes, the footwork is tricky and fast enough but I just don't think that House compares favourably to the other dances. They were in the bottom three but these have, imo, been the most versatile dancers so far. I've enjoyed all their routines (though I missed last week's quick step).

Charlene & Jeff. Another good couple that has been strong week in and week out. I liked the routine. Jeff did some pretty amazing strength moves. But they wound up in the bottom 3.

Janick & Shavar. This was decent. The couple doesn't excite me though. I wonder if this is the couple that the judges thought should have been in the bottom 3 and weren't.

Danielle & Sebastian. I've liked this couple. Last week, as I recall, they had a very strong dance. This week not so much, however, they are memorable whereas I find a lot of the other dancers resemble each other (Amanda and Kristen for example)

Kristen & Jesse. Personally I didn't like the routine and I was ready for these two to go home, which they did. The judges liked the routing and clearly didn't want the three that were in the bottom to be in the bottom. Jesse even said "come on Canada get it right". If that's the case, there must be some couples that are seen on the inside as 'should go home now'.

Kloe & Jonathan. To me this piece was similar to the beach one. It just seems lightweight. I certainly didn't see any disco moves at all (well, maybe one). They could have called this style almost anything. This is another couple that I could see going soon. Maybe this is the couple the judges wanted to have go? If so, why have they been given the pimp spot two of the last 3 weeks?

Anyhow. That's my take on the evening. I missed the group routine. In fact, I think I've missed all the group routines (except the Mia Michaels one - which I very much enjoyed). Have they been good?

Thanks for the update

We finally got tv back in time for Survivor (which involved me convincing the telus person it was critically important for me to get the correct registration code as I was having people over for a Survivor party, so I jumped the queue).

I was really blown away by season one, from what I've seen of this season, not so much.

I think the choreography has been weaker and this has done a disservice to the dancers.

I don't think I am a prude, but I really don't need to see simulated sex positions and actions on the stage.

I'm having a tough time picking a favourite this season. IMO the best dancer is Denys. Possibly the best dancer I have seen on any of the SYTYCD shows (except maybe Alex ) but I don't think Denys has the wow factor to win a popularity vote.

My favourite for most of this season has been Amanda. Lovely long lines, but tall girls don't usually win these shows, right?

My son like Danielle, who is a pretty good dancer, and IMO does have some wow factor that the voters will probably like.

I can't help looking at Danielle...

and seeing Canadian actress Cynthia Dale...

I am loving Denys and Amanda too. I think they are the best dancers HANDS DOWN. I voted like crazy for Edgar and Natalie because I like them and thought they were in trouble. Guess I was right and it wasn't enough for Edgar. Was not a big fan of the red head with the bad teeth. Glad she is gone.

SYTYCD Returning to Canada this season and seeing the "old" format makes me realize that the "all star" format is really, really good. You don't get a weak partner making it to the top 10 riding on someone else's coattails.

Denys is our households favourite dancer too! His solo this week was very original and refreshing. He clearly made a 30-second solo because he was done right before the buzzer.

Compared to last year, when the top 4 women could have been top 10 in any season anywhere, I'm still not warming up to many. Janick reminds me of someone I knew which always throws me off. I'm glad she's representing NB very well though. My grandma's from there initially (Caraquet). She seems to be given the Jayme Rae roles though and I don't think she does it as well as JR did. I guess I probably like Nathalie and Danielle the best.

Was a good show but I think they threw Sebastian and Nathalie under the bus by giving them the Cha Cha. I can't see how they own't be going home. They were bottom 2 last week to boot.

The other 3 dances were quite strong. I enjoyed the hip hop number. Nice to see Luther Brown not do his usual stuff.

Denys's solo was also fun with a humourous twist. Shows that he has some humour and personality.

Wow. They dropped four yesterday.

The two Ukranian-heritage men, Denys and Jeff, are left as are Leggy Cleggy (Amanda) and Janick - must be some serious Atlantic Canada voting there though to be fair, she's way better than Isaac was.

22. "RE: Final Four"
Cutting from 8 to 4 on one week was pretty shocking. I wonder what drove that (or was it scheduling?).

I was actually quite surprised that Danielle did not make top 4. She might not be quite as good a dancer as Janick, but IMO she was more dynamic to the audience. And she had the soldier dance this week - not often someone gets the emotional dance and booted in the same week.

I think what is missing this year is real spark. Certainly some fantastic dancers, but who has the spark? Nico had it, and TJ had it in spades. Maybe the lack of that will leave the voters actually picking the best dancer, which has to leave Denys as the strong favourite.

Although I can't help loving Leggy Cleggy - what fantastic lines on her and she is a very good dancer!! (and like Denys her solos show great range) Is she just too long to be cute? She is certainly very good looking.

I was a little surprised to see Jannick still there too. Cutting four this week....wow! I was sad to see Mackenzie go, I really liked him a lot.

Does it seem like a lot of contemporary and hip-hop to you this year? Hardly any ballroom.

Denys and Leggy are the top two HANDS DOWN. I must vote this week.

25. "Final Four Performances"
Wow. Great show last night! All four couples dances were very good. Some of the best of the season. Actually, one of the best dances of the season was the one in the promo with Nico and Tara Jean. Maybe they'll do that one in the finale?

I think it says something if you want to reach through the tv and punch someone but that was the feeling I had toward Jeff during the spousal abuse number. And Jeff's always such a pleasant fun guy.

I do have to agree that as far as ballroom guys being able to do other styles, I don't think I've ever seen anyone as good as Denys. I'm not sure whether it will help him or hurt him that all the judges basically said that they think he should win. I happen to agree with the judges. I just don't know whether that was a good idea.

So, Montreal and Lethbridge have had winners. Is it Toronto's turn?

I have to say that I don't think I haven't liked one of Sean Cheesman's pieces yet. I think the only other choreographer I can say that about is Wade Robson. Stacey Tookey is also very consistent while Sabrina Matthews and Nico look like they've got some good stuff too.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening last night.

This season started out kind of meh, but wowsa that was a FANTASTIC final four show. Everyone of those dances should be on the tour. I will go to the tour now just to see them.

Denys and Amanda are soooo unbelievably good. Jeff is also fantastic. I felt a little bad that they didn't pimp Jannik like they did for everyone else, but that's they way it goes sometimes.

A-Mazing!

31. "and the winner is..."
Tonight was the finale. Pretty good show, with lots of numbers from the season. I was glad they included some of the group numbers, as I found some of those the best of the season (including Mia Michael's number with all the chairs).

Also a marriage proposal, which seemed to spoil a lot of make-up.

After millions of votes, the top 2 were...

..
..
..

...
..
..

..
.
.
.
.

Amanda and Denys.
No surprise for me - IMO these were the best two all season.

And the winner is..
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Denys.
IMO the best dancer from any of the seasons or countries (my runner-up would probably be Jakob from a couple of seasons ago in the US). I wasn't sure that his personality would have made him favourite dancer, but I certainly think Canada voted for the best.

Good season. I hate the way all these shows dish out the superlatives (best season ever?) but certainly another good season.

Actually I was disappointed that they didn't have Nico and especially Tara-Jean on the show last night. There are only 2 past winners, so why not bring them back?

Further, I wondered if there had been a falling out between the show and TJ. When they did there "where are they now" bit, they went on and on about Nico, Natalie, and others listing out all their accomplishments, and barely mentioned TJ ("busy around the world" is all they said, I believe).

A worthy winner. In fact, I can't complain with any of the three winners of the Canadian show.
Denys, having a combination of ballroom and contemporary, is perfect for a show like SYTYCD.
It was kind of neat to see someone who says "I'm speechless" actually be speechless. So often people just say it but aren't.

I agree that I wasn't sure that his personality would help him connect with the viewers but it didn't stop him. He also essentially led wire-to-wire because right from the first show he threw down the gauntlet. It's quite surprising that he didn't get a backlash from all the rave reviews he was getting and the judges all basically saying "You should win".

It took a while for me to get into it but it was another good season.
