Getting to know you, getting to know what's your dance style. Getting to see you, getting to hope I can stand you. So we get a night of who knows what to see if there is anyone we can tolerate, or maybe even root for, or pick up the phone to vote for. Not that it will matter because we ain't voting for awhile. Apparently there is this thing called baaassseeball. There is some games on the same network and SYTYCD can't have a normal schedule until the boys get done playing this sport thingy.

Nigel. I gotta say how wonderful it is to bring tap to the show. Also to introduce a new choreographer. This is going to be exceptionally difficult. Underneath your feet go 100 miles an hour, may not pull in the vote. Can't teach the other partners tap. so these three will be doing everyone else's but they won't be doing theirs.

Thanks for the links, I'll have to check them out.
I think the issue is you can't really have an all tap routine with people who never tapped before. Just too much to teach in a 3-4 day period.
When I took dance they did recommend for those that wanted to work as a dancer that you perfect a fairly basic set of tap steps so you can fake it well enough to get through an audition, but then usually for the performance you'd be looking at weeks of preparation which if you had the basics you could get the routine down. In a learn a dance a week thing I think for anything other than a dance school recital type of performance you'd need someone with a pretty good background.
I suspect in a few of the Broadway type things if they have a couple with a tapper they could add some tap/tap elements to the piece, but probably not be able to have both people tapping the whole time. If we get Bianca and one of the guy tappers into the top 10 we may see an all tap routine, but I don't expect to see much for the next several weeks.

I agree with what you say although I think that someone with a step-dancing background might be able to fake it better than some others. Likewise, a tapper might be ok in a routine with step-dancing.
All I was saying is that Nigel's concern that no-one will pick up the phones for a tapper isn't necessarily true. Canada picked up the phone for a tapper and a female krumper for several weeks.
No problem for the links. The whole season, there has been youtube videos of each dance as well as the geo-fenced ones on the official site.

It might just be me, but does anyone find that Bianca seems to pull faces? Maybe she's just a bit more expressive than I'm used to, but it feels a little cheesy.
But otherwise I thought that was a great routine (From a completely non profession fan, who lacks basic rhythm. So I just admire.)

Billy is incredible. Victor was pretty good but didn't make much of an impression on me.
Noelle was very good. We didn't get much of a chance to see her personality but I have a good feeling about her. I wanted to hate Squeaky (Kathryn) but she was also pretty good.
There hasn't been much of a chance to see anyone's personality so far tonight. Some dancers have been able to convey their personalities while dancing, which probably gives them a bit of an edge.

Maybe my eyes are just tired from studying for midterms, but I found the lighting a bit distracting. Particularly when it flashed on Ashleigh's (sp?) white dress, it was blinding.
Since I'm by no means a Latin dance expert, I have to ask, was that very advanced? Maybe because I'm used to only seeing a couple preform Latin dances on the show, but it seemed sort of... disconnected.

I thought the rehearsal clips were very funny. I didn't like Ashley that much during the Vegas week and I wanted to hate her tonight but she was very personable.
I loved Ryan and Karen. Ashley is kind of stiff and I thought Karen was much more fluid and sexy. I see Ashley stumbling in the other styles.
The problem I had with the routine is that it came across as Ryan & Ashley's dance with Karen dancing alongside them. Otherwise it was very good.

Ashleigh's dress was distracting combined with that lighting (like somebody above me said) and it didn't do Karen any favors. I hope she does well in other styles because she's smokin'.

They were all very good.
I think Russell was the best of the hip-hoppers, although Legacy held his own and even Kevin did a fine job.
I think the first contemporary group was better than the second one because the girls were better in the first group.
Bianca was the best tapper but Philip held his own and even Peter did a fine job.
Mollee was the worst of the jazz dancers. Ellenore and Pauline danced circles around her. I thought Pauline was the best but Ellenore was right behind her for me.
And then the ballroom dancers. And yeah, Ryan & Ashleigh seemed to be dancing together more with Karen dancing alongside but I suspect that's because Ryan & Ashleigh are married to each other.

In the first contemporary dance, I'd swap Ariana for Ellenore and you'd have one powerful group of dancers.
This is going to be a fun season. Let's see how they do in OTHER styles now.

Finally saw it all on youtube/sytycdism/mj'sblog. I'm so glad those exist 'cause I wouldn't have a hope in hell of seeing it otherwise.
Loved the Wade Robson group routine. Excellent concept, excellent dance.
Loved the hip hop number. Great energy, great moves. The backward hand walk through the arched legs of the other two? Sick!
Loved the choreography of the second contemporary piece more than the first. It's just a question that the concept/presentation appealed to me more in the second, not a statement to the quality of the dancers (to me, all 20 were very good or better tonight). Billy Bell was definitely top 4 material. It's a big loss for the season.
The tap routine was also fabulous. Excellent presentation.
I also enjoyed the other pieces but not as much as the above. The ballroom routine was limited by the fact that there were three dancers. So many moves are meant for two and cannot be expanded unless to four. I think Ryan is just the type of ballroom guy they want though: tall, strong and masculine. He should be safely into the top 10. The jazz routine really didn't do much for me. Pity because I like both Ellenore and Pauline. I expect one of them to get broadway soon and kill it. Mollee looks like an early casualty to me.

I absolutely LOVED this "getting to know you" episode. Oftentimes we get to the first pairing episode without knowing anything about some dancers that weren't highlighted in the Audition Rounds (i.e. Sabra, Jeanine). This way we were able to see the dancers in their own style and learn more about them. They should do this every year from now on.
