"S4 Audition Favorites Thread" |
I figured we could use a thread in which we keep track of all our favorites from the audition rounds. Ya know, the people we'll never see again... until maybe next season. So here we go... Audition round 1: Los Angeles Favs-- "Twitch"-- was a favorite of mine last season, and still is. I could really see the contemporary element in his solo this year. You can tell he's been working to improve. And he's got a great personality. Phillip Chbeeb-- Upon first viewing I wasn't as impressed with this audition as I was with last years, but I really did enjoy his performance when I watched it a second time. I always appreciate a breaker/popper who is willing to study other dance styles to improve. William Wingfield-- As I said in the ECUT, I was mesmerized by this guy upon first glance, and I'm not sure why. And then he busted out this performance to a spoken word piece, and I was hooked. Original, interesting, awesome. I really like this guy. Victor Kim-- More personality than moves, but he did have some pretty good tricks. Too bad he got cut already. Robert Muraine-- One of the most amazing auditions I've seen. I was speechless. And he seemed like a really cool person, too. His Vegas ticket acceptance scene with Nigel had me cracking up! Complete entertainment, and I want to see more! Funny how all of my favorites so far are poppers/breakers. I guess I like to root for the underdog, but we'll see what the coming weeks have in store. Flashy moves by Tribe!

*goes to Wikipedia cuz he's never heard of that kind of popper*Popping is a funk dance and street dance style based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body, referred to as a pop or a hit. This is done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with various movements and poses. A popping dancer is commonly referred to as a popper. Popping is also used as an umbrella term for a group of closely related illusionary dance styles and techniques that are often integrated with popping to create a more varied performance (see below) It is generally believed that the dance evolved in Fresno, California in the 1970s, partly inspired by locking. Fresno?? Fresno??????? locking? Like other street dances, popping is often performed in battles, trying to outperform another dancer or group of dancers in front of a crowd. This gives room for improvisation and moves that are seldom seen in shows and performances, such as interaction with the other contestants and spectators. Today, popping has been incorporated into both the hip hop and electronica dance scenes to some extent. I hope that clears things up for the exam. Fresno?

LAST EDITED ON 05-23-08 AT 03:39 PM (EST)What?? No one wants the Italian Stallion? Twitch Both ballroom couples Phillip Chbeeb (although I’ll be surprised if he makes it very far) William Winfield (very moving and original) Robert Muraine (brilliant, but may not make it far) One thing I remember from this show previously is that very few, if any, of the featured dancers make it into the final 20. ETA: Now that I think about it, I do remember Kameron, Sasha, and Sasha's partner from the tryouts. Also, wasn't the guy who was in the final two also briefly featured?

Tribe, you are a god in human clothing. Does he fit on a siggie? Hmm.... better wait until the top 20 is announced. There might be someone there equally averse to clothing but doesn't shave his chest.

He is too arrogant for me Dan. I hate those that KNOW they are better looking than others. However, he does have an amazing body!

Favorites from SLC and DFW Kelli Baker ~ Daugther of a choreographer, really really really showed passion and technique. I was mouth-agape throughout her routine. Thayne Jasperson ~ Wow! Absolutely zoomed by but I beg of you all to rewatch it if you can. Wow. Arielle Coker ~ Amazing lines, amazing presence, totally believable, my one to watch. and a shout-out to Brett Banford for being such a smooth character.

I liked Kelli too, but the one I fell in lvoe with was Joshua Allen. I liked his attitude and his moves and he's got charisma and potential. I hope he makes it thru Las Vegas!I thought Brett was wonderful. I got all teary-eyed seeing him. What an amazing person (and made me think what a great example he is for that troll over in OT). And I hated Paige Barbie Jones! Blech!

question about Kelly....why do you think she is in this? She is terrific, but obviously has connections...so why does SHE need this? I thought this show was about exposing dancers so they could get more professional gigs and truly get the chance to persue dancing as a career not a side gig. Kelly already has all the contacts, has already been in High School Musical, so what gives? She doesn't need this like some of the other dancers do...

LAST EDITED ON 05-29-08 AT 03:28 PM (EST)On the other hand I could see where she might need this so people see her as her rather than her Mom. She has connections but I'm not sure if those make her more, or less, marketable. I mean any show her Mom did people are going to ignore those on her resume as if they never happened, if they don't hold that experience against her. I do not think the rules were set up so only those who cannot possibly get work as a dancer are allowed to apply. ETA: If you click on the dancers from previous seasons of SYTYCD over on wikipedia, a lot of them had dance jobs and connections before they got on the show. So I don't see her as any different other than her previous body of work is something we all know about.

I've been doing a horrible job of keeping track of my favorites, so I decided to do one big catch up post as I re-watch the episodes.Salt Lake City Gev Manoukian-- The ice skating breaker with a splash of contemporary thrown in. I look forward to seeing what else he can do. Kelli Baker-- I don't know much about contemporary dancing, and I don't always "get" it, but I know that when someone can make me teary eyed with their dancing, they are damn good. Ryann Race-- Ain't no way he's making the show (based on what we saw of the choreo round, I'm surprised he even made it to Vegas) but he seemed really nice and I enjoyed his fluid movement. He appears to be made out of sticks though. Heh. Matt Dorame-- Very good control. Very beautiful lines. Very bad outfit, but still very cute. Dallas Chad Agnor-- Yeah, it was completely stupid to try and dance on a bad hamstring, but I just found him intriuging. I mean come on, an ultimate fighter with a head tattoo that teaches little kids ballroom and line dancing? How fun is that? He might not be able to dance worth crap, but I liked him. Joshua Allen-- Put a huge smile on my face, and man! how the heck did he jump that high? Amazing. Charleston Sheila Kaiser-- I really liked the choreo for her routine; it was more than just pirouettes and jumping around like a lot of the contemp pieces can be. I could've done without the heart covered hoodie though. It looked like something a 6 year old would wear. Washington DC Brandon Bryant-- Love that music. Very intense. Those flying leap thingys were awesome. I was really blown away the first time I saw him, but not as enthusiastic when I watched it again just now. Still, it's clear that he's extremely talented. Milwaukee Evan Kasprzak-- I wasn't sure what to make of him at first with the odd 40's style of dance, but it was a great performance and I loved the spinning sequence he did at the end. Cute guy with lots of personality. Cooper Zamorano-- I could see a little of the Travis comparison that Nigel mentioned, but I think Trav is much better. Still, this was pretty darn awesome. Random cities from the Milwaukee episode Natalie Reid-- Very cool style. I couldn't take my eyes off her. Flashy moves by Tribe! Special shout-out to TrannyTravis. That? was awesome. *big grin*

I like youre first 2 alot and the 2nd roommate with the African music--so original. Rebecca...we'll see she did redeem herself but the jury is still out on her..I liked the first popper too that they put thru to hollywood right away...I was hoping they'd show the woman I think from SC that they said was the best female breaker I'm not sure about the two new judges...they don't seem to have the "edge" I love with Shane...I may have to start watching MTV too! It's coming!
