"Tracking the Losers"
It seems to me that there are certain choreographers and/or dance genres that landed the couple in the bottom three more than others. I thought it would be kind of cool this season to track and see if any patterns emerge. This way, a couple could start preparing for the 'dance for your life' solo even as they are practising their Doriana Special.

Bottom three week 1
Shane Sparks Hip Hop (Faina and Cedric). This one actually surprised me, as his routines are usually well received. Maybe he split his support vote, because his other routine did not land in the bottom 3
Doriana Sanchez Disco (Sabra and Dominic). Maybe CSTL can confirm (since they have last season still recorded), but has she ever done a routine that has not landed in the bottom three? I do appreciate that she is a cultural anthropologist and trying to save the knowledge of extinct dances. She reminds me of the linguists who are desperately trying to save languages where only 15 people in the world are left speaking them, but is it really fair to the contestants that "randomly" choose her routines? Maybe there is a cultural musuem somewhere which would better suited for her talents. I am not sure why SYTYCD still uses her, but in their defense, she kind of scares me and I would not want to be the one to tell her that her services are no longer required.
Alex da Silva Argentine Tango (Ricky and Ashlee) All I can say about the routine is UNFORTUNATE (and yes I will post more later - this was such a wreck, I don't even know where to begin). This was doomed from the start. Ashlee and Ricky didn't have a chance to stay out of the bottom 3.

*snort* Has anyone been able to turn disco into an art form?

And don't even get me started on the unfairness of the elimination itself.....Ricky outdanced those other two, but he lacked the charisma to give them ratings. Pffft.

Q-Pie, did you forget about this thread? I liked this idea.

So, for week 2 the bottom choreographers were:

Hunter Johnson (Faina and Cedric, Fox Trot)
Dave Scott (Shauna and Jimmy, Hip Hop/Stepping)
Tyce Diorio (Jessi and Pasha, Jazz)

2 brand new choreographers end up in the bottom, and one person from each of them is eliminated (Faina and Jimmy).

Can we update this? Weren't Jessi/Pasha in the B3 after their beautiful waltz....and then Jaimie and Hok after their waltz? I bet none of Wade Robson's have ever made it to the bottom 3.

My bad folks! Things have been muy hectic here. We just limped in yesterday from a family road trip (yes, what were we thinking?) with broken airconditioning and a wonky transmission and extremely limited access to the internet. We are now looking after DH's cousin's two kids while she is having a c-section. I'll try to get it updated soon.

Besides, I was so blown away by the bar graphs in another thread (sorry I can't remember who started it) I am suffering from graphics envy.

I do not think CSTL saw this, so I will tell him to check later tonight about that...however I don't think there has ever been a disco not in the bottom three. I think it is more the dance styles than the choreographer who puts it together. Some styles are just more enthralling to watch than others.

What?

7. "RE: First four shows"
I think swing and jive are considered 'latin' -- I know jive is according to international style, I can't recall any people doing swing that were also doing international style. In American style, swing is considered a rhythm dance (rhythm is roughly the equivilent to internation latin). Hope this helps rather than muddies the issue.

9. "RE: Tracking the Losers"
So As It Stands
Week 1
Shane Sparks Hip Hop
Doriana Sanchez Disco
Alex da Silva "Argentine" Tango

Week 2
Hunter Johnson - Foxtrot (Cedric and Faina). I wished I paid more attention to statistics so I could properly account for the Cedric factor
Dave Scott - Hip Hop (Shauna and Jimmy)
Tyce Diorio Jazz - (Jessi and Pasha)

Week 3
Dan Karaty - Hip Hop (Danny and Anya) - Maybe CSTL could check this for me, but aren't Dan's routine's usually in the bottom 3?
Jean Marc Genareaux - Tango (Neil and Lauren). Sigh - I am usually a fan of JMG. I am surprised at his song choice - awesome song for an Argentine tango, but hard to pull off the staccato of an international or american style tango without the strong percussion beat.
Lil C - Krump (Sara and Jesus) I really need a primer to figure out all these hiphop styles.

Week 4
Alex da Silva - Mambo (Cedric and Shauna)
Alex has now taken the lead with 2 numbers in the bottom 3!!!
I guess I have to consider the Cedric factor -- I do think it was kind of crass to draw attention to the fact that he hired three extra assistants when he found out he had Cedric. I guess with all that help, no one bothered to mention to Cedric that he shouldn't be dancing flat footed? I guess this is a problem I have with Alex -- I suspect that he spends very little time teaching the fundamentals of the dance (Note to producers - PROVE ME WRONG! -- show ADS teaching them about foot placement, frame, theory about the dance -- not some stupid annecdote that ignores the subtly of the dance , and I will sing his praises. Maybe I should say that with my fingers crossed.
Ohh - we have a tie
Tyce Diorio - Comptempory (Danny and Anya). Not sure how much of this is Danya backlash and how much of this is because this is a Tyce Special. I really am not inspired by his choreography and I seem to recall from previous years he often lands in the bottom 3. Maybe if I can get time, I will look up previous stats from other years.
Toni Redpath - Waltz (Hok and Jaimie) Well, it is true that you are allowed more liberties with American Smooth Waltz, but there should be some waltz in it. Whatever disease that Hok was dying from must have been pretty contagious because you could have fit another (very large) person in between him and Jaimie when they were in frame. At least there was no chance she would catch whatever he had. And this was not necessarily a good thing.

And please let me know of any omissions/ mistakes -- I am trying to do this with the 'help' of my kids.

I find it interesting that it's been almost all ballroom and hip hop routines so far in the bottom 3. I guess most people really like the contemporary routines.

Sorry for the holdup folks!

So As It Stands
Week 1
Shane Sparks Hip Hop
Doriana Sanchez Disco
Alex da Silva "Argentine" Tango
Week 2
Hunter Johnson - Foxtrot (Cedric and Faina).
Dave Scott - Hip Hop (Shauna and Jimmy)
Tyce Diorio Jazz - (Jessi and Pasha)

Week 3
Dan Karaty - Hip Hop (Danny and Anya) -
Jean Marc Genareaux - Tango (Neil and Lauren).
Lil C - Krump (Sara and Jesus)

Week 4
Alex da Silva - Mambo (Cedric and Shauna)
Tyce Diorio - Comptempory (Danny and Anya).
Toni Redpath - Waltz (Hok and Jaimie)

Week 5
Jean-Marc Genereaux - Foxtrot (Danny and Anya) Oy! Second time JMG is in the bottom. Maybe it's because of the Danya factor (sorry Dan ), the preamble focussing on her injured foot, who knows?. Now he is tied with Tyce Diorio and Alex da Silva for having 2 routines in the bottom three.
Mia Michaels - contemporary/post apocolyptic mutant welders dance. Lauren and Neil
Yes, my favorite snobby, nose-in-the-air, "I don't recognize a trained dancer unless he/she's lyrical and I am going to go out of my way to be rude and belittle everyone I don't like" judge/choreographer. Well, now she can be upset and snobby towards the 5 million great unwashed Americans who just don't get what real dancing is. I guess I can be grateful that he got my hopes up that Lauren would get punted, but no such luck.
Well, JMG wasn't tied for bottom for long, because we have a new leader that is holding the bottom all by himself
Tyce Diorio - broadway Hok and Jaimie. I think I am just going to sigh and shake my head sadly. I actually didn't think this one was too bad, but America disagreed and we lost HOK.
After 5 weeks the gold medal goes to
1. Tyce Diorio (3)
tied with 2 each for silver
2.Alex Da Silva
2.Jean-Marc Genereaux
And the rest with (1)for the lead medal
4.Doriana Sanchez
4.Shane Sparks
4.Hunter Johnson
4.Dave Scott
4.Dan Karaty
4.Lil C
4.Toni Redpath

Week 6
I wasn't sure how to rank the top 10 as one part of teh couple may be in the bottom 4. I decided to give 0.5 a point if one of the couple landed in the bottom and 1 point if they both land in the bottom. I may award bonus points if both members landed in the bottom, since it probably means the routine was really dreadful.

Shane Sparks - Hip Hop Lauren. Not sure how much of this is the "WILL YOU PLEASE GET RID OF HER ALREADY AND STOP SHOVING HER DOWN OUR THROATS", but he got stuck with her, so Shane will have to take the hit
Tyce Diorio - Contemporary Kameron. More people running around. Oh well, at least he can secure first place by himself
Toni Redpath - "viennese waltz" Dominic and Jaimie. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?! Waltz with Spanish over tones WTF!?!. Yeah, as soon as think of Vienna I think of Senioritas and matadors and Paella. I'd give my left nut (well, you know what I mean)to smack her upside the head with a sock filled with something unpleasant. I think I am starting to dislike this woman even more than Alex da Silva (and if I didn't have such an unnatural obsession with Argentine Tango, she would definitely be my number 1). It is not just poor choreography, it is total disregard for any of the history or style of the dance.

Standings After 6 weeks
Still in the lead
1. Tyce Diorio (3.5)
tied with 2 each for silver
2.Alex Da Silva
2.Jean-Marc Genereaux
2.Toni Redpath
5th place goes to
Shane Sparks (1.5)
And the rest
6.Hunter Johnson
6.Dave Scott
6.Dan Karaty
6.Lil C
6.Doriana Sanchez

Honorable Mention goes to Toni Redpath for choreographing truly dreadful routines. I might have to tweak the rules so she is recognized as the Goddess of Dreck that she is (hey - if the judges can change the reasoning for who goes home, then I certainly can change point system here). Maybe if I track percentages of each choreographer's routines that are in the bottom. *rubs chin* HMMMMMM!

Like you have time to do that?! But it's probably a good idea. For instance, Tyce is the leader, but I think he has choreographed every single week (but then again maybe he's always bad). Aren't Dan and Doriana batting like .500? Is there anyone else besides Tony Meredith that hasn't landed in the bottom 3?

I have never seen Labyrinth, but sounds like the Bog is a perfect place for Toni and her Spanish-Austrian dances.
