>If Marcela is a great cook and not a great leader, does it matter? If Martha likes Marcela, she can just hire her as oneof her chefs if she wins the Apprenticeship.
Yes, it matters. Why? Because Martha herself has established the guidelines for what she wants for her Apprentice. While there is some play there in terms of what she does want, we have to rely on the qualities that she's already stated. Now if what she's said has no validity, then we have no show and none of us should really be wasting our time watching this program.
Remember Chuck? Now Chuck went ballistic and started crying and saying he wanted to leave. While his melt-down was a little more over-the-top than Marcela's, it boils down to the same thing. He wanted to leave until Jim (hmmmm... starting to see a pattern here) talks him out of leaving. For Jim wants to manipulate the situation and get rid of Dawn and keep Chuck, the weak player around. And why is Chuck a weak player? BECAUSE HE IS NOT A LEADER! Remember Martha sniffing her nose and snidely saying to her daughter that he's a "creative type?" She said this like she was scraping some bad-smelling doo-doo off her Ferragamo shoe.
If you need a refresher in what happened, here's one link:
It doesn't give an exact transcript, but you'll get the idea.
Now the interesting thing is that Chuck, set-up the shop, came up with the idea, etc., etc. There was also a huge crowd that was attracted to the store, but Chuck took the fall and not Dawn, who was clearly a problem from the outset. Why? Again, because he was just a "creative type," he wanted to quit, he didn't know how to manage (remember Marcela asking Leslie if they should have had a marketing plan in place BEFORE they came to the store?). Here's a link for that in case you need one:
Note that it states quite clearly that both DT and Martha have established clear guidelines for contestants to follow in terms of characteristics to display if they want a job. And being a one-trick pony is not what she needs for this job. Here is the synopsis given for this on the link:
"Ninth is a warning that contestants cannot be one-dimensional. This is a perfect example – Chuck used to work as a floral designer. But Martha is not looking for just another floral designer (let alone one who thinks that a bunch of tulips is the height of marketing). As we discussed earlier, Martha clearly noted that she needs an executive who can lead as well as being creative. Chuck showed neither side of himself."
Also if you follow the link given on that website it'll bring you to a page that puts down what DT and Martha are looking for
And what are they looking for?
NUMERO UNO: SHOW LEADERSHIP!!!!
Basically Marcela did the exact same thing Chuck did and was somehow spared. Why? Because I believe Martha had already determined that Amanda was not right for her company. Amanda was way too independent and feisty. She was another Martha in a very real way. And while Martha needs leaders, she needs people that are also team oriented. I don't think Amanda could ever really be that way. And I don't think that is particularly an insult. It's just the way it is and Amanda will be hugely successful because of it. Also Amanda should never have stated what she did about people not wanting perfection or perfect people. Martha built her company on that premise. She should NEVER have said that. I also think strategically for Martha who is looking to build up a more warm and fuzzy image, to get rid of Marcela at that point wouldn't have looked good, so she just deferred Marcela getting the axe for a little while.
Even when Marcela is not the leader she's a disaster. Remember the wedding cake fiasco? She couldn't help because she cooks Mexican food!!!! So because of that she doesn't know what women would want at their wedding? Huh? Makes no sense at all. And she doesn't know that women like to match colors at their weddings? Wow! How is it that she missed this fact? But again, Marcela skated by because she wasn't PM and Shawn was already targeted by Martha as not the type she wanted around.
Marcela is a cute, likeable girl and probably a very good mother and cook, but she really needs to go.
