The PM should have been fired. The episode was tedious to watch due to her absolute lack of leadership skill and aptitude. In fact, she has NO aptitude for leadership. But she sure knew how to push Martha's button! 40 million Hispanics -- out of 365 million people -- so you better keep me? Puh-lese! And Martha caved in to that blackmail, pure and simple. Other than being able to cook, the woman is a walking disaster and this is the 2nd time she deserved to be fired!

Other than being able to cook, the woman is a walking disaster and this is the 2nd time she deserved to be fired! Completely agree. She shows absolutely no leadership ability. And just how is she going to deliver these 40 million Hispanics when she can't even sell coffee makers? I mean are Hispanics just going to swoon over Martha hiring Marcela and start purchasing Martha Stewart products? Not likely. The pastries were not a bad idea, but they should have used the pastries in gift baskets for people who purchased the coffee makers. Otherwise you just get crowds of people coming in for nothing more than coffee and a free meal. People that come in for a little treat are not there to buy. Martha should have known that. Amanda and Ryan could have stood on their heads and it wouldn't have made a difference. Ryan's idea was really much better, but hers could have been salvaged by not just giving away the pastries and giving people a free meal. Remember on the other team, that Bethany (I think it was Bethany), told the guy not to push the cupcakes since it was all about the coffee? That's having your priorities straight. I'd also like to add that sneaky, little Leslie also just seized the opportunity and acted as mentor. And you notice how she slid in that she's also a Latino to Martha in the board room. So I guarantee, she'll use this marketing to Hispanic strategy and how while she really, really, really wants Marcela to succeed, BUT she has much better skills and could do a better job at doing this. And Leslie is not all that wonderful. She has a very excellent sales personality, but her skills ... not good. But she knows how to work it. If Marcela wants to cook for Martha, then she should cook for Martha. There should be plenty of opportunity for her to work in the organization. But being a leader? Nope! But I must say what Amanda said was just stupid. Downright stupid. Martha built her reputation on being "perfect." That was her whole approach. So for Amanda to say people don't like this was just ridiculous. Very bad argument given the history of Martha's company and PR used to attract an audience.

At the risk of this becomes a 'mutual admiration society', I have to say that I'm completely bowled over by your logic. Kudos! And I had forgotten about Martha's reputation as Miss Perfect. You are absolutely correct in your assessment of Amanda's stupidity in portraying herself as NOT perfect, not even TRYING to be perfect, and that people don't LIKE perfect people! I remember feeling Amanda was taking the wrong tack with the perfection speech, but it didn't register why until your post. Again, Kudos!

It really disgusted me to watch Amanda and the other guy (i forgot his name) bully Marcela! Amanda deserved to be fired with the way she acted, she would sit around and complain about the task, then get an attitude when Marcela asked her did she have any ideas to contribute, remember? And it also bugged me the way that guy tried to man-up on Marcela puffing his chest out and talking down to her while they were waiting to be called back into the boardroom, trying to intimidate her beforehand. That really bugged me! "40 million Hispanics -- out of 365 million people -- so you better keep me? Puh-lese!" I didnt take it as blackmail, what she was saying is that hispanics are now the biggest minority, they have buying power, it would be very smart for Martha to capitalize on this by introducing latin recipes, to broaden her market would put more money in Martha's pockets. It would be stupid to limit herself.

That being qualified should not matter because Marcela is Hispanic and there are, after all, 40 million other Hispanics in the U.S.? I don't think many Hispanics would agree. The premise of the show is that Martha hire LEADERS, not racial designations. That is why Marcela's, the INEPT with not a leadership bone in her body, statement was blackmail. Or in current parlance, Marcela played the Race Card and Martha folded!

More importantly Marcella pointed out to Martha that she actually has a vision for what she would like to do if she is given this opportunity. Amanda telling Martha that she enjoys gardening and has no real applicable skill to bring to Omnimedia- and no vision of how she fits it - is what doomed her.Marcella has a legitimate beef that she was totally subotaged on this task. After all, she got LOTS of people into the store, but the others were simply not closers. The person who should probably be held most responsible for this particular failure is Marcella, because poor pricing is most likely what REALLY killed them. But the rest of her team laid back waiting for her to fail and they got punished for it. I'm glad to see the PM doesn't have to always be the fall guy when the rest of the team actively is trying to sabotage the entire task.

UGH!!!! Could you PLEASE stop your racist comments??? It frustrates me to no end when people get angry at reality shows and then say that this person or that person used the "race card". Thanks for tokenizing and dis-valuable every minority's experience. I'm sorry but racism does exist in north america and you're not helping things by saying someone is "blackmailing" martha by speaking about their heritage. If a women spoke about her experience as a mother and told Martha that she could speak to and reach the millions of mothers out there, would you be accusing that person of "Mother blackmail" or accuse her of using her "mother card"???? And I'm sorry, if you think that we are all born with equal opportunity in north america, and that race doesn't matter, you're sadly mistaken. There is a reason why more blacks and hispanics in america are poorer than white americans and why there is a disporportionate numbers when you look at who is in american prison systems. If you believe that everyone is born "equal" and that race doesn't matter, then how to do explain these statistics? If you explain these statistics by saying "THEY are not pulling themselves up like THEY should" or "THEY just need to find a job", or "THAT person is using their RACE card to get ahead", then you are admitting to being racist because If you look at the statistics, and firmly believe that no "race" is better than the other, then you have to ask yourself WHY is it that certain groups of people are succeeding in north america while others are being left behind? Maybe it's because of the systemic racism that exists in society, institutions, media, etc. Having said all this, I like Marcella! I don't think she has what it takes to be the apprentice for Martha, but she's cool! And I agree with the statement that there is a lot of buying power in the hispanic community and it would be stupid for Martha not to take this into consideration.

I agree with what some of you have said. Based on what I've seen from Marcella, she's a talented young woman. I believe she made several mistakes during this task, but her team contributed to the failure by not backing her up. One of the posters brought up an example from last season, when Craig and Tana failed to support Kendra's project. That is exactly what happened with Marcela. And, I'm glad to see that their lack of loyalty didnt pay off at the end. To use another example from last season, during the Home Depot task, Craig's team mates didn't agree or understand his vision of the project. But, they came back around and supported him and ultimatelly won the task. Again, if Marcella's team had supported her and taken advantage of all the people that came in for free food, maybe they would have had different results. Their inability to sell is what led them to failure. That being said, I think Marcella will be fired soon. She seems like a decent individual and I hope for her sake that she's fired sooner, rather than later. I think she's better off far and away from those hyenas.

Well said. Did Martha say she wanted a leader? Or just someone who would fit into MSOM? I thought it had evolved into someone who could plug into the organization somewhere not yet named in some unnamed capacity.

LAST EDITED ON 11-25-05 AT 12:23 PM (EST)I don't think Martha appreciated that comment at all. I don't think it will get her any closer to working for MS either. I doubt that Martha can attract many Hispanics, because most of them tend to lead a down to earth, natural lifestyle. Honestly, I cannot picture anyone trying painstakingly to make a perfectly square tamale wrapped in a perfectly wrapped corn husk with a perfect corn husk bow with perhaps a sprig of thyme tucked neatly under the corn husk bow for accent. http://news.yahoo.com/comics/
