I'm wondering why it had to be "pink" though? You can make frosting and fondant in whatever colors you want so why couldn't you make it in blue or purple or whatever? I didn't understand this either. Don't all cake decorators offer to do their cakes in the colors you choose? Shawn, who was doing to selling, so obviously did not believe in her product, it never occurred to her to offer to change the color as a selling point. That's called marketing. Jim (?) griped after that 'you can't sell a pink Hummer unless you find the one person who wants a pink Hummer' (paraphrased). Well, that's why they make the thing in different colors. Neither Martha nor Alexis mentioned they should offer to change the color either. Alexis made a comment about talking the bride into buying a pink cake to compliment her blue color scheme?!? This is the first entire episode I've watched. Matchstick is a train wreck. It's not worth buying an entire pig, just to get a little sausage.

LAST EDITED ON 10-06-05 AT 11:45 AM (EST)Reasons why I watch the show: 1. Its something I can share with the girls 2. I'm waiting for Martha to have a melt down 3. I'm waiting for Match stick to be down to two members. As for those cakes I have to say I loved the non-pink one, but not just for the colour, the different shape layers were appealing and the close up designs I quite loved. Siggie Courtesy of tribelphyl! And that's the way the cookie crumbles

I have to agree on the colors along with everyone here - how easy to at least change the ribbon color or the base cake color to ivory or what not...But I also thought - why not make a deal with one of the chefs at the culinary institute - tell them you want to offer custom cake design for an additional fee ($100 - $500 or whatever!) What a great thing to offer. I would have made 3 different smaller designs and told people that we offered everything under the sun, or one of these three stock designs. Probably unrealistic with their timeline - but that's the way I would have gone. Everyone wants things to be exclusive for a wedding, you don't want the same cake as every other girl, you'll pay a little more for something personalized... Just my 2 cents..

Really? I'm glad I wasn't trying to sell it. I don't care what color it was....Martha made a good point at the begining about asymetrical cakes (1 out of how many in the catalogues/ magazines she had in front of her). I disagree with her conclusion: it wasn't the salemanship, the design didn't have mass appeal. It would be an appropriate cake for 7-8 year old girl for her birthday: a barbie or unicorn match perfectly on top.

LAST EDITED ON 10-07-05 AT 01:57 AM (EST)I, too, wondered about the color involved. But, from what I gathered, that was completely Shawna's choice in marketing. The other team offered different cake flavors, and said they could choose larger or smaller, different tier layers. Their cake was a summary sample of what could be done. Shawna, when asked, said they could do the cake in a smaller size oval, but that the number of tiers and the color pink was not negotiable. Shawna was also the one that talked to the celebrity cake decorator that told her that pink was the "in" color. Don't really think this was anything other than a monumental marketing mistake. Edited to say that I think the whole apologist thing from Alexis & (possibly) Martha about how to fit a pink theme with a blue theme was just a potential lesson on how they "might" have marketed something that couldn't be changed. Don't, in any way, think they thought the unchangeability was okay. I was never a Martha watcher or supporter until she went to jail. That was a travesty of justice & a waste of my tax dollars, imho. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/CTDSites

LAST EDITED ON 10-07-05 AT 09:20 AM (EST)When I got married I shopped all over town for a wedding cake. The town I grew up in had a bakery that made the absolute best cakes, pastries and such. Well they were famous for their wedding cakes. Living there my whole life and going to several weddings over the years, I tasted my share of Tosi's wedding cakes. Since I moved down south and got married down here, that dream went down the toilet... I went to pretty much every place in town and in the end, it didn't come down to price but to what flexibility the baker offered me. Not only did she let me take an element from this cake and an element from that cake, but because I had a fairly small wedding (50 guests) but wanted a "grand" cake, she made 3 of the tiers "fake" so it looked like I had a lot more cake than I actually did... When a bride looks for her perfect cake, she should have complete control with imagination being the limit to what can be done. When they decided to make the cake "pink only" they made a huge mistake! I make wedding cakes! It takes the same amount of time to make blue fondant as it does pink, same for frosting. They really needed a baker on that team... Regardless, the cake itself was beautiful! I didn't think "kids birthday" at all. I wouldn't be surprised if people started asking for the "Pink Apprentice Cake"... http://www.geocities.com/craftscrochetnmore/index.htm

I thought that oval cake was one of the dumbest wedding cakes I've ever seen, and there are few in that high end market who want pink ribbons and trim. The cake looked like an Easter bonnet to me. The clients had virtually no control over the cake (since most thought the pink looked stupid), no variety of cake flavors, nothing else to choose from since the cake just didn't fly as a wedding was idiotic from a marketing point of view. The fact of the matter is, most brides and grooms have that 'traditional' wedding cake design in mind, with a pretty traditional shape. Matchstick sold no cakes because the stupid thing didn't even look like a wedding cake! Excel's cake was gorgeous and had good salespersons acting like professionals. Matchstick had a bunch of persons making meek attempts, looking pained, trying to sell a cake even they wouldn't buy themselves and didn't believe in. Finally, the "fake it" comment made her sound dishonest and no employer wants to wonder whether the employee can be trusted. Meanwhile, the boardroom deal was a personal vendetta, and even Trump won't stand for that!
