1. "RE: Song Selection for this week"
Thanks Loree,

It doesn't appear that anybody has taken risks with their song choices this week but perhaps there will be some good arrangements.

I am looking forward to seeing what Ryan can do with Paint It Black.

Queen songs are usually easy for women but very difficult for men and I always think it takes guts for a man to give one a try. Storm should have no trouble with We Are the Champions but I would have enjoyed seeing what Lukas could do with it.

Hmmm...Lukas and Radiohead?
I hope he understands that this song is better serviced with a non-strained voice. Can he do anything but? I hope so.
He was a favorite at the beginning of the show and is slowly slipping down the ranks for me.

Same can be said for Toby. I don't think his song choice this week will highlight his abilities.

Truthfully, I'm looking forward to Zayra's performance. DavidBowie might be the perfect fit for her.

Finally, this will undoubtedly be Jill's week to go.
Mother Mother will be her undoing. I can just sense it.

3. "RE: Song Selection for this week"
Dilana - Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who)
I think she will be awesome with this song. I'm surprised no one else wanted it.

Jill - Mother Mother (Tracy Bonham)
I don't envision liking anything from Jill at this point.

Ryan - Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones)
...and on a lighter note, Ryan does paint it black.

Storm - We Are the Champions (Queen)
Wow, big risk from Storm. Neither JD or Jordis could really pull it off last season.

Zayra - All the Young Dudes (David Bowie/Mott the Hoople)
Maybe she could borrow Bowie's Ziggy Stardust outfit?

Josh - Interstate Love Song (Stone Temple Pilots) - with Tommy on drums
I get the feeling I will hate this. He will try to add his "soul" sound to STP. I anticipate much cringing.

Magni - The Dolphin's Cry (Live)
Magni always does a good job. I don't know this song but given other Live songs, I would guess it is a good fit.

Patrice - Instant Karma (John Lennon)
I'm not sure what Patrice could do at this point to Wow anyone. She's just kind of blah.

Lukas - Creep (Radiohead)
He will be totally awesome, or totally suck. His solo rehearsals didn't sound to bad when he actually tried to sing.

Toby - Burning Down the House (Talking Heads)
Bad song choice for him. It's a quirky song. Can Toby do quirky? Oddly enough this might have been the perfect song for Zayra.

eeep. "Tommy on drums" is a spoiler.

"Creep" is one of my all time favorite songs. *jumps up and down*

Same here, which is why I'm putting more pressure on Lukas to bring it. I just hope we'll all be able to understand (even for just this once) what he's singing.

Oh, I'm on the Lukas love train already. I'm just not "completely" riding it. I guess you could say that I got one foot on board and the other foot getting dragged on the tracks. While Lukas has never been at the top of any of my lists, he's one of the four contestants this year whose performances I'm looking forward to watching every week. It's just that I prefer being able to listen to the lyrics of the song and not, uhmmm... melodic mumbling.

5. "RE: Song Selection for this week"
Storm - We Are the Champions (Queen)
Dilana - Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who)

The two leading ladies tackle great songs. This should tell us which one will be in the lead until the end.

Magni - The Dolphin's Cry (Live)
Lukas - Creep (Radiohead)
Toby - Burning Down the House (Talking Heads)

Similarly these three choices should tell us which is the leading man. They aren't classic rock songs, both "Creep" and "Dolphins..." have fluctuations in the intensity that should reveal who can deliver. Toby's choice puts him at a disadvantage. Creepy Lukas should shine.

The rest, who only can hope for exposure at this point:

Ryan - Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones) What??? I don't see it.

Jill - Mother Mother (Tracy Bonham) Maybe she can save herself.

Zayra -All The Young Dudes (Mott The hoople) Best choice for her. She has to deliver on a song that has no gadgets.

Josh - Interstate Love Song (Stone Temple Pilots)Don't see it here either. the guy must be desperate.

Patrice - Instant Karma (John Lennon) Bye-Bye Patrice. 24 hour voting Karma is gonna get her!

Even if you know a band it doesn't always translate to you know their entire discography by heart.

IIRC didn't she grow up in South Africa? Even when a band gets some songs released in other countries it doesn't mean everything does. Some of the singers from abroad who get a few hit songs here in the US that get them widely known tend to have many more records in their home country that are difficult to get in the US and never get any radio play.

Thanks for the link Rockdog. That was the one song I didn't know either. But since Jill is singing it I guess it didn't really matter.

Again we have 5 of the 10 songs are ones they performed last year. I am still waiting for more new song selections.

I don't want to give away any spoilers. But I am really waiting to see Ryan. That one has me really interested.

Seems like a pretty good song. Very "Live-ey" with the slow verse and the high intesity chorus. Could be good. What do you cut out to get to 90 seconds, though? The verses seem pretty long and sort of drawn out. We want to get to the rockin part.

Is it just me, or does this week's crop of songs have others already bored? Maybe its just me.

But otherwise, some thoughts.

Dilana - can she do anything other than incredible? I have no worries.

Storm - This has me a bit worried. Queen is difficult for anyone other than Freddie Mercury to do. I think its almost impossible to take a Queen song and not sound karaoke to a degree. Its Freddie Mercury. Nobody can do Freddie Mercury.

Lukas - Glow, i love that song too. I think he can redeem himself this week. This would be the ideal time for him to relax his voice, and truly sing. This song does match his vocal style and his gravelly voice.

These are the only three that have me intrigued this week. For the others...

Toby keeps saying he's going to "bring it" and "crush it" for Jason. "Burning Down The House"????

Zayra - there is nothing to say.

Patrice - i like her voice, but Instant Karma? She should have taken Interstate Love Song.

Patrice - i like her voice, but Instant Karma? She should have taken Interstate Love Song.

I'm glad she didn't take STP. She would have taken their best song and sucked the soul out of it.

edit to add:
BTW, the soul she would have sucked is different then the "soul" Josh will attempt to add. Neither of these things are good. The song has it's own soul, it needs neither more, nor less.

I thought I recalled that as well. I don't know if they are doing the what they created for the live show (a full hour of potentially bad lyrics to the same song over and over could be lethal, heck even one of the best rock songs ever sung over and over by different peeps would not be a ratings boom, although it would really show who has how much talent). Maybe they will have a clip of what each one did in a private performance for the band and have this song be the performance part for the audience.

Yeah, the song writing was shown in the 30-minute 'reality' show. The network isn't showing it, but I think those eps can be seen/downloaded from the Rockstar site. Here in Canada our network that airs Rockstar is showing them Monday nights.

Though they didn't show all the songs, A few of them were really good. the one that surprised me the most was Dilana, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be, it didn't sound like she took the assignment as seriously as some of the others, IMO.

Dilana - Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who)
I don't know this song, and don't know much by The Who.

Jill - Mother Mother (Tracy Bonham)
Anything Jill does will iritate me. She should have no problem oversinging this & killing me.

Ryan - Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones)
I'm excited for this. Mig did ok with it last year, but it's a song that desrves a good serious rocker (which Mig was not). Ryan should excel.

Storm - We Are the Champions (Queen)
Gawd I'm sick of this song. Queen & Nirvana should be off the Rock Star list NOW.

Zayra - All the Young Dudes (David Bowie/Mott the Hoople)
Should be enteraining. Bowie & Zayra were made for eachother.

Josh - Interstate Love Song (Stone Temple Pilots) - with Tommy on drums
I love this song & hope Josh does well. Should be awesome to see Tommy play on a great tune.

Magni - The Dolphin's Cry (Live)
He should do really well with this song. Live seems to fit his vocals.

Patrice - Instant Karma (John Lennon)
Hm. I think vocally she'll do ok. I'm just getting tired of her.

Lukas - Creep (Radiohead)
Please do this well Lukas. Please.

Toby - Burning Down the House (Talking Heads)
This could either be genius or a disaster.

Zayra.....All The Young Dudes??!!......I can't wait. Really. I hope she can pull it off. But it's a sure thing it'll be entertaining.

Lukas....Creep...I hope he sings the song and the song doesn't sing him. That's a risk.....even for Lukas. I don't think he's in nearly the same league as Radiohead....and I'd hate to see him "make it his own".....

Toby...Burning Down the House.....I'm sorry to say I see room for him in the bottom 3 with this...I hope I'm wrong and he "rocks"it.

I predict Patrice will bomb Instant Karma (another great song)....

Really looking forward to this show!

I thought Josh showed some nice vocal tone last week. I think he should have tried to get Creep. It's the one song in this group that would have suited his voice best.

I would have liked to hear Lukas sing ILS.

Magni should be perfect for the Live song.

If Lukas can do Creep justice, I'll be converted. i have never felt him, but we'll see...

Based on song selection, I think the bottom 3 will be:

Jill (I love Mother Mother, don't think she can do it well)
Josh (STP hasn't gone over well so far, more of what the band doesn't want)
Patrice (ok, I don't know this song but based on other comments, she seems more likely than Zayra to be in the bottom).

And I think Burning Down the House could give Toby a chance to show personality, which I think he has lacked thus far.

I don'nt know The Dolphin's Cry either, but I don't care for Live, and expect a competently dull performance here. Also from Ryan. Paint It Black is, meh, whatever. Easy to sing, hard to stand out singing.

Storm should be good.

Not familiar with Dilana's song either, but I'm sure she'll do well.

Interesting "confessional" in the mansion show. Dilana "encouraged" Lukas to take Creep. She later said something to the effect of: I wanted to see if he can do it. If he doesn't have the voice for it, we'll know that he isn't made to lead this band."

Strategy in a musical audition show! I knew there had to be more reasons for liking this show for someone who has never been able to watch more than 10 minutes of "Idol"!

I find it interesting how ever since Dilana made the comments about helping Dana because she wants to see everyone do well, blah, blah, blah... she has been (portrayed as?) the most manipulative. She deliberately chose Lukas for the team songwriting clinic to keep him close. She encourages him to take a song requiring a strong, clear voice. I think the real truth is that she was willing to help Dana because she never thought of her as a threat. She clearly feels that it is between her and Lukas for the gig.

Too bad the lyrics and the song she came up with was boring. Lukas had the best I thought. More importantly Supernova seemed to think so too. Storm was pretty good too. Is it surprising I didn't notice Zayra or Patrice? Were they even shown?

I liked Lukas' and Ryan's. Toby's and Storm's were okay. Jill's and Dilana's were horrible. We didn't see Josh's, Patrice's, Zayra's or Magni's. There are, however, clips available out there.

I finally listened to Dilana's original stuff. She kinda needs this gig. At least the question of "why hasn't she made it yet?" is answered by that.

As far as her suggesting Luke take "Creep", I'll give her the benefit of doubt for now. Evil MBP and all. So for now I'll say she wants the best at their best. (I bet she regretted/she'll regret suggesting it.)

The original song clips are available on the Rockstar site. Unfortunately for me, I will have to watch them at home as I have an itty, bitty pipe here at work.

v true. And I wonder if the prize would turn out to be worth all the manipulation. But I think she'd be guarenteed some major partying.
