Think the current crop of professional miscallers is bad? Wait until you meet the refplacements.

Better hope there's some unknown talent lurking on the D2-and-below, high school, and amateur levels, because they had a hard enough time finding it in the semi-pros. And get ready to kiss every betting line goodbye. Predict the players? If you want to try. Predict the sub-stripes? Your money will miss you very much.

So. The incompetence you're used to, or...?

A colleague of mine is an NFL referee. The next time I see him, I'll be curious to hear his take on the situation.

2. "Refrplacements: Phase 1."
ESPN is reporting they'll be used in the Hall Of Fame game (Cardinals/Saints) this Sunday. Consider this as a trial run. Also trial holding, trial intentional grounding, trial facemask...

Oh, get the good lines while they're to be had! There's nothing like statistical uncertainty to muddle up the field while placing a rational bet.

I've never played for real money (a principle I stick to), but I've almost always won in play money, thousands worth, just playing the numbers.

I'm assuming the guy who called a touchback on a punt downed at the 5 (Redskins-Bills, I think) was the same guy who couldn't hack it previously. In the Lingerie Football League.

That would be Craig Burd, who had a few flipped to him by the oh-so-accepting crowd. Clearly a man to keep an eye on. Or at least one to keep an eye out for.

I can't find anything on his career history, but I don't doubt some of the more irritated fans are compiling a biography right now, complete with appropriate things to scream in his face. Two days of work, tops.

Would you quit a second job to go full-time with your other employer if they weren't replacing most to all of the salary you were about to lose? But on the other hand, more crews -- or even just having extra backups on standby -- would benefit the league, and it's not as if refs don't occasionally get run into and need a few weeks off: let a designed substitute step in.

And are refplacements more likely to call penalties -- or less?
