"PGA Championship: the Kiawah Ocean Course."
I give it one day before the field is openly begging for the sweet mercy of the U.S. Open.

Also the relative coolness of a blast furnace, the low humidity of a sauna, the traps of a quicksand pit, and the death of Pete Dye.

I have never been convinced that Pete Dye actually likes golf.

By the way, it only means something to the golfers who'll get knocked out on Friday (and not much), but Kiawah Beach is one of the great relaxation spots. If, you know, you're personally capable of getting in and out of South Carolina alive. It won't be any good to anyone this week, but...

Leaderboard: Media hacked Tiger Woods, hacker Vijay Singh and Swede Carl Pettersson at -4, Poulter at -3 and Donaldson and the roaring Rory at -2. It's like old times.

Rory's up top at -7 with a three shot lead over Petterson, while there are a gaggle of guys at -3 and -2, including Tiger and Vijay.

This course can bite you -- which means this is probably going to be a better chance of falling back to the pack, rather than someone making a charge. Tiger's play is his problem and as far as I'm concerned, if Singh walked into the ocean and never looked back, it would make for an interesting weekend. (Some of his social views do not go together with mine.) But just about anyone can hang a triple-bogey on any hole, which means this thing isn't quite over yet.

But think about the kind of courses Rory has played on, where ocean wind and surf are (pardon the pun) par for the course. Tiger likes a challenging course with good weather, and Vijay, well, he's better suited for courses on the other side of the Pacific.

We'll see... sure, it's not over yet, but I think Rory will stretch his lead while the media-spotlighted Tiger falters in an attempt to catch up.

(eta update): Poulter birdies the first five holes in a row to get on the leader board. As of now, it's Rory at -9 thru 6, Poulter -6 thru 9, Pettersson still in it at -5 thru 6, and a gaggle of players, including Woods at -4 and -3, as well as Walker and Stricker who shot -5 yesterday. The course is playing fairly easy, a moderate wind, greens fairly soft, and the players are avoiding the massive sand traps (heck, the 7th hole is half sand trap!).

(eta again): Tiger's finding the dirt, sand and dust with some wildly stray shots these last few holes and is barely holding on at -4.

(eta again): And now all of them find grassy sand... Rory plays a great shot out of a deep bunker to save par, Pettersson hops from grassy sand to a another bunker, and Poulter plays a great shot out of grassy sand onto the green, narrowly avoiding hitting it too hard into the water on the far side of the green... This course isn't going to let the winner walk away unscathed...

(eta again): Poulter, Rory's main competitor, drops 3 strokes with bogies on 13, 14 and 15, dropping from -8 to -5, as the course bites him. Meanwhile, Rory has scored four clean birdies for the day, the most recent one on 12, for a commanding -11 score with a six shot lead on the field.

Yep, it's all Rory - not even Adam Scott could choke this lead away with a seven-shot lead after 16 holes.

Congrats to Rory McIlroy, your 2012 PGA Championship winner. He really played a brilliant round today with the disaster potential lurking on many holes to play the way he did.

Sure enough, Rory is -12 with a 7-stroke lead at 16, while Tiger faltered with an even score to end at -2.

Rory played a great round of golf, and when he did get in trouble, he managed to play brilliant shots out of it, staying on par, with five birdies and no bogies on the day.

All over now - casually nailed a long putt on the 18th to put him at -13 and an eight-stroke win for the largest margin of victory ever at the PGA Championship. He also won by eight at Congressional at the U.S. Open last year.

Incidentally, he missed by one month to be the youngest two-time major winner. Jack Nicklaus still holds the record as the youngest with Rory just behind and Tiger another four months behind.

Great golf, enjoyable to watch, and he's such a great guy to cheer on.

Roaring Rory!

Yes, such a big contrast between him and Tiger at the same age. Tiger was driven and he felt rather unapproachable, Rory feels like one of the boys you'd sit down in a pub and have a brew with.

I'm especially feeling proud - my grandparents were from Northern Ireland (near Derry) and my father was born in Cork County on the southern part of the island, and to have guys like Rory, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell all win majors while also upholding fine reputations off the courses makes it easy to cheer for their success.

Make it six birdies on the day, with the last one on 18.

This guy, he's the star of the game.

Well there you go... Vijay closed with a 74-77 to put him well back, which, for him, is the equivalent of walking into the ocean and not looking back.
