"What's wrong with fruit?"
I couldn't believe what they were saying about fruit last week! Shay couldn't order bananas, grapes, or pineapple, but berries were okay? And, mango was a bad dessert choice because it was "loaded" with sugar? But, fat free peach frozen yogurt isn't? With all that added sugar? As Jillian explained to Dina about the papaya that came with her Mexican meal, the natural sugar in fruit doesn't make it off-limits. Including mango which would have made meal option A even healthier if a half cup of it were substituted for the yogurt.

Depends on which theory of diet you are going by.

If you look at glycemic index usually berries would be a better choice than bananas or pineapple. The Frogurt may depend on what they sweeten it with. Yogurt generally tends to be lower on the glycemic index than a lot of fruits as it has some protein in it and the sourness of it can lower the GI as well.

A lot of what you include or exclude depends on what aspect of diet you are looking at. There can be reasons to limit fruit (as with the good--fiber and vitamins--you can get a lot of sugar and if you are trying to keep the blood sugar even you might limit which fruits or amounts or when you eat it). A cup of fruit tends to have more calories than a cup of veggies, so that can also effect decisions.

Your body really doesn't care much if the sugar comes from a pineapple or was processed out of some other plant and added to a dessert. It doesn't judge it as natural or added it effects your blood sugar (assuming the same kind of sugar) the same either way.

The only fat free frozen yogurts I've been able to find are laced with high fructose corn syrup. And, other crap to compensate for the effect removing all the fat has on the taste and texture of the yogurt. As for the difference in calories, the half cup of peach yogurt has 100 and the full cup of sliced mango 110, if it's fresh, with no added sugar. My calorie counter says a half cup of mango has 55.

The thing is, for most people, sugar content in fruit should probably be the LEAST of our concerns when dieting. I guess when you are in a rapid-weight loss reality it show, it matters. And of course when you are diabetic, it matters.

Maybe, an a rapid-weight loss "reality" show, the sugar content of fruit does matter. Which makes favoring 100 calorie frozen yogurt with added sugar over 110 calorie sliced mango with no added sugar, as Allison Sweeney did, even more shockingly stupid. And, have you noticed that many of her ideas on nutrition conflict with Bob Harper's and Jillian Micheals'?

True, when trying to rapidly lose weight, it does matter a lot.

At 100 calories of frozen yogurt, I'm guessing there was artifical sweetner rather than real sugar in it. I doubt any of the challenges are "Allison's" ideas. TBL probably has nutritionists/dieticians on staff that concoct these challenges.

Maybe Shay has some Allergies?

Where I grew up there are a lot of Silver Birch trees, which I became allergic to. The problem protein, at least I think it is protein. Snidget will correct my feeble biology facts hopefully Is very similar to one in Apples, Grapes, plums, and on. If I am to eat these then they need to be cooked so that the protein has broken down.

Arrrr Cap'n!

Yep, sometimes the protein in the pollen can cross react with protein in foods.

I am very allergic to ragweed and when we did a food panel on the last allergy testing (more out of being overly cautious than we had any solid evidence food also bothered me) I had a small cross-reaction with cantaloupe that has a similar protien to the rag weed pollen protein.

Luckily it is mild enough it doesn't seem to bother me, but eating a lot of cantaloupe all the time probably wouldn't be wise. Cooking does denature proteins, but I dunno if you can cook cantaloupe.

For people who are gluten-intolerant, oats, which are gluten-free, can become contaminated with the gluten from wheat, if they are processed in the same environment.
