"Skin Question"
LAST EDITED ON 12-14-06 AT 12:39 PM (EST)

This may be a weird question, but I was wondering... do the contestants end up having to have plastic surgery because of the weight loss? I've heard that when someone goes through such a dramatic weight change, like associated wih gastric bypass there is extra skin...

I don't think it's a weird question. I was wondering the same thing. I don't think anyone has had extra skin removed yet, but I don't know how someone loses over 200 lbs and doesn't have skin just hanging off them. It's possible that Erik had on some kind of "girdle", and we did see the tiniest bit of extra skin on Wiley's stomach, but what about their arms? or Erik's neck? There should be a waddle hanging there...don't you think?

Otherwise, I'd like to know how to get rid of my extra stomach skin from my pregnancies!

On last year's finale...the guy (not Matt...the other guy...I honestly forget his name) he had ALOT of excess skin hanging when he lifted his shirt up.

don't know if he had that fixed with plastic surgery after the fact or not.

To avoid getting that 'excess of skin' when you are losing that much weight...you have to lost the weight slowly and drink a ton of water (to give your skin that elasticity). We didn't see Erik lift up his shirt or show his stomach...but we did see Wylie and Marty with their shirts off...both men who lost less weight than Erik, and at a slower pace...and neither had all that loose skin.

I was thinking the same thing about the flabby skin. Maybe they do just drink a lot of water and that helps, but that is a lot of weight each week to lose without any surgery for the skin to back to normal.

Some contestants might need plastic surgery, and some might not. It depends on the individual, and how much elasticity their skin has. Some people can lose lots of weight and their skin will just shrink down, and other people's skin will be baggy after weight loss, necessitating surgery. As a general rule, younger people have more elasticity in their skin. Losing weight slowly helps, but if you don't have naturally elastic skin, it will not shrink down. Drinking lots of water makes no difference whatsoever.
