Dad and the brothers DID kind of strike me as the types who'd be willing to quietly bury Steve somewhere up in the Rockies if he made Randi unhappy.

I think he's actually pretty cool. He's a stand-up guy and the most mentally stable of the bunch. Those kids are a nightmare though. The mom is not much better. What kind of look was that on her face during the whole ceremony? Don't even try to pretend woman. Would that be to much to do for your daughter? No wonder your kids are freaks. And what's up with the younger brother bawling his eyes out? Nut up son.

Geez. Pathetic.

4. "Of course then he goes and embarasses her..."
during her emotional post-wedding speech. That was kind of #####.

I can see where they would be coming from though. $250K is really not all that much money (after taxes, etc) for a couple nearing retirement like them. They don't look like they are really struggling for money or anything. If it was a million for them or something...maybe that would have had the shock value and caused a different reaction.

When Steve explained how they had to change the show once the Buzzkills showed up at the mansion into a show about family, I thought aaah...so that's why it stopped being funny.

Cheezy ending to the Coy Family - This is Your Life show. I preferred the first couple of episodes of Steve antics to the Coy Love-In.

What a strange family.

Did the producer grow a conscience somewhere along the lines? Or was this a ploy on Fox's part to distract the image of making light of marriage for it's more conservative audience? Hmm. Anyway, it was funnier at the beginning.

Yeah. I think it was a bunch of hooey to soothe their battered egos. One of the producers had to go into the bathroom and talk the whole lot of them into coming back out just to hear that they'd won the money. They Coys were all set to fly outta there that same hour. Nobody likes being made a fool of on national television. I'm also guessing that a family like theirs that obviously values family closeness was completely disgusted with the fact that Randi was willing to make a mockery of the institution at their expense and hers for money.

I think dad thought it was a ploy for attention till he saw the video footage of the show (hence the comment he made during her explanation).

They sure did have big smiles once they were a million dollars richer.

I did feel bad for Randi. She went through a lot. She should have got the whole million and not have had to share it with her family, especially her pi$$y brother.

10. "Disappointed!"
I felt the ending was really anti-climatic.....That whole family should spend their winnings on therapy. And what's up with the father? At the end, they had a little update and said something about the father's upcoming 50th birthday - I could have fallen off my chair - I will be 50 this year, and I thought the parents looked as though they could have been my parents!! I guess it must have something to do with the high altitude of Colorado affecting the aging process or something...The most pathetic thing of the whole show was the brothers and sister - how spoiled, selfish and psychotic are these morons? Perhaps they can all buy themselves new personalities. If my daughter would have pulled a stunt like that on us, I would have been so thrilled at the realization that she was not going to actually marry someone like "Steve", that I would have been elated....instead, this whole family made themselves look like poor-sports, no-sense-of humor, stick-up-the-a** idiots.

28. "RE: Disappointed!"
I was disappointed with the last two shows! I liked the first two or three because they were funny as heck. The last two were just too much crying and drama! I can't understand why you make a goofy comedy show to appeal to someone like me, then change it right at the end so it becomes the type of show someone like me would never watch. Last night, it should have ended with a "Springer Show" type white trash woman crashing the wedding and screaming that Steve couldn't marry Randi cause he was already married to her! That's the same type of comedy this show generated early on and think of what kind of circus such an announcement would have thrown the wedding into! They should have let me write the ending for this show!

I think they expected her family to take the whole thing a lot less seriously than they did. The whole show tanked after the Coys arrived because of so much negativity. They couldn't get the Coys to lighten up without spoiling the 'joke' so they had to shift the angle of the show. You just can't make comedy from unhappy people unless it's in a clip show like When Nature Attacks.

Okay, I'll start by admitting that I'm a shameless conspiracy nut - I'm always convinced the twists on all reality shows are much more "shocking" than they end up being or that we're not being told everything (okay, 1. Duh! I know, I know... and 2. Example: I still think Matt from Joe Schmo knew).

So, it occurs to me that Steve felt really bad for Randi, who is just breaking down, losing it, and since part of being a good actor is being comfortable with ad-libbing...

He made that whole speech thing up right then. He seems like a stand-up guy, and felt bad for her since her dad just cut her off and basically told her she was an idiot. I don't think he had any intention of making some grand speech about how great Randi and her family are and how amazing their familial bond is, but he thought, "Gee, folks. You really are that uptight. Can I possibly say anything to make it so Randi and her half a mil aren't sleeping on my wife and my sofa now that her family has disowned her? Hmmm...okay, here I go."

One last thought...OHMYGOD, WHAT IS UP WITH PAT AND FIRE?!

Contemplating arson, weird incest-type feelings for Randi, somehow managing to be the only guy I've ever seen NOT look adorable in a kilt...

This guy should be committed.

Her siblings were really strange. What was up with all of them falling in bed together at the beginning. Is this how the guys hang out together in their sister's bed?

And that fire remark was creepy. Especially when the dad didn't even react like it was a strange thing to say. Obviously he is used to Pat speaking like this.

She still would have shared it with her family. She's just like that.

I did notice that the Coys seemed to brighten quite a bit more after they heard they were getting a full half a mil. When they heard they were supposed to get 250, they were like 'Yeah, well, whatever. We're still mad as hell.' After Steve gave Randi the Double-Stuf checks it was all light-hearted laughter and champagne.

50. "RE: Steve is an awesome actor"
Ladro,
I'm not so sure about that. I think the original intention was to find a family that would kind of play along and make it a comedy, or even farce.
I know if it were my family (and I was from an upper-middle class family) it would have been a far different show. My family would have gone along with anything I wanted, been supportive and had fun with Steve and his family.
The comedy would have been in their expressions and their comments behind closed doors. In fact when my sister had her bridal shower her future mother-in-law "entertained" my parents' high-brow guests with anticdotes about her days in women's wrestling, throwing out such classics like "Well it wasn't too bad, except whan they smacked you in the boobs or stomped on your crotch" (you have to read that with a strong Texas drawl to appreciate it, and it's absolutely true). The looks on the guests' faces were priceless. In spite of our disapproval of her choice in men (and his family) we never had an attitude like the Coys. We did express their concern that she perhaps wasn't doing the right thing but it was her choice and we supported her.
I think once the producers discovered how uptight the Coys were that they did change the show a little. That's why the first 3 shows were so much funnier than the last.

Melanie: This is not how I envisioned my sister's wedding! (did i say sister? i meant mine...because it's really all about me...pay attention to me! Look what I can do! I can cry on command!)

Nameless, useless brother: She's only thinking of herself! (um.....uh....yeah.....get yourself another beer and shut up...)

Mom: Tell it to everyone else, I dont want to hear it (paraphrased, but essentially the same level of uselessness.

there...are...no words....that family(re:committee) is messed up.

23. "RE: Finale discussion"
I liked the ending. I think Steve saved it, and turned it around so Randi's lies seemed not as bad. She really did start out with a fun attitude and then had so much trouble with hurting her family. She had come too far in the farce to let it all go.

I liked it, all of it.

I think Randi is precious, I think Steve was great.

Maybe I'm gulible but I believe that they changed the tone of the show because of the better drama the Coy's presented. Yes, her sibs were selfish and immature, but her parents were great.

I enjoyed the whole show, and really loved the way the ending saved what could have turned completely mean spirited into something that had some heart.

I hope to see more of Steve, he was funny and over the top when he needed to be, and made this show work.

I'm with you DMC. I liked the ending!

I'm not sure how else we'd want this to turn out? Do we want the brother's freak out and kill the producers? The family destroyed forever? Steve to mock Randi and her family? What was everyone else looking for? What would make the everyone else not "Disappointed?" Are we really that desperate to make our own lives seem better by enjoying the misery of others? The mood on this board is that most people wanted to see some serious pain and anguish. That's kind of sad.

26. "RE: Finale discussion"
What I thought was cute, was when Steve said at the end, (paraphrased) "and you won't believe this, I am already married" She was stunned.

I actually thought Randy held up well through the wedding and the announcements, she only really broke down (maybe due to editing) when they announced the higher amount of payment.

I enjoyed it, I thought Steve tried his best to smooth things over. He's an actor, not a psychologist. He did a nice job.

I thought it was funny that Steve announced the actor part with: "And now I'm supposed to tell you something. They want me to let you know that I'm not really who you think I am..."

It was like he was paving a verbal fire escape by putting the statement on the producers' shoulders. Like if she threw a fit he could point a convenient finger their way and say 'They told me do it!'. Heh.

29. "RE: Finale discussion - disappointed"
I was disappointed in the ending, not because I wished to see any ill-will towards Randi and her family, but because the first few shows were so funny with Steve's antics, that I was hoping that the family would be good sports about the whole thing once they realized the joke. I imagined everybody sighing relief and laughing about the situation....Instead, these people obviously were way too intense, so the ending was very uncomfortable to watch. I think that if another show is ever done using an unsuspecting family as part of the joke, they should really make sure that they do more research on the stability of the family members - make sure they can take a joke!

Well we could have had Nelson from the Simpsons come out, point at them and go "HA HA".
No but I agree, as much as it goes against my character I thought the ending was classy and appreciated it.
And no way did Steve ad-lib that ending. He was performing his lines. And rather well at that. He did a great job.

I'm with you, Buggy. Loved the show - it was hilarious; loved the ending - cause I felt so bad for the family. Loved Steve - thought he played his role superbly. I even loved the family. I didn't think they were being selfish, they were standing up against something they knew was wrong.

I thought her parents were very supportive, considering. I have kids. I know that I would've stood up and said something at the 'Speak now of forever hold your peace' if one of mine was marrying someone I thought wasn't good for them, so that I could at least I'd know later that I did what I could to prevent it from happening.

49. "RE: Finale discussion"
Well it did make me wonder what would actually happen if someone objects to the wedding when they ask that. I'm sure they don't stop the wedding just because someone simply doesn't like the fact that the wedding is taking place (now if they said one of the people are already married that would be different). But what does the preacher do if someone objects without any real reason? My guess is that the preacher says, "Well thanks for your opinion" and continues but I'm curious what the procedure is.
Any one know?
I asked my sister to ask her ex, who is a preacher (he actually married my wife and I) so I'll let you know what he says if no one else knows.

I liked the show.
I found it to be the funniest thing on T.V. for a long time....Especially the first 3 weeks or so.
I am not sure how it could have ended better. There had to be some sort of way to bring the Coy's back without hurting their feelings. Steve managed to do that by laying heavy compliments on the closeness of their family and their love for one and other etc.
The funny thing was the Coy family may be more disfunctional than most. All three of the children were spoiled immature babies. Can you imagine the beating Bobby is going to take when he gets back to school. I mean here is an 18 year old crying at his sisters wedding....Come on!
The sister laying in bed for days because she was being let out...The older drunken brother who said that Randi was only thinking of herself....Duh, its her wedding.....

Funny T.V., Steve pulled it out, big time.....I hope that Randi is getting a little somewhere, she sure could use it.

I agree with you on all points. Not sure how they really could have ended it better. Good job to the producers for putting the video together and get the family smiling.

Oh, and I was sooooo glad the hostess didn't get to spoil the surprise. Steve did a much better job than she ever could.

Oh I know that would have been a great ending! I was really disappointed with the 'Joe Schmoesque' ending! For one thing Matt actually earned that ending! And if FOX used the ending where Steve was already married it would have made the 'Schmo ending' much more palatable.

I just don't get it. Since when do siblings get to run your life?? If I were getting married and my siblings didn't like the guy, I would EXPECT them to show up at my wedding and be supportive of me. These people acted like they could dictate to Randi who she could marry.

That being said, Randi needs to learn the real value of $250,000. During her speech (before she found out how much they would be really getting) she said she did it for her family, that the $250,000 would change their lives. Now let's see, 2 parents , three siblings. $250,000 split 5 ways is $50,000 per person BEFORE TAXES!!!!. She was making it sound like her family could take that $50K each (before taxes) and never have to work again and live in luxury for the rest of their lives. Got news for Randi. Even the half mil before taxes isn't enough for that. Randi is as clueless as I thought she was.

LAST EDITED ON 02-24-04 AT 01:57 PM (EST)

I know ---- I was thinking the exact same thing regarding the money. Just $250K? And split between the entire family? And that's before tax takeouts??? So....the parents can "retire" on their measly split? And what college is the brother going to attend on his share where now he "won't have to worry about it?" And where is the sister going to travel on her share........to Las Vegas for a weekend??? And what about the other brother..........he wants to move out and this can help him.......what, pay his first three months rent???

Clueless, clueless, clueless. I can't figure Randi and the $$ situation out. They look like they have some money, so you'd think she'd have a clue.

That being said, I knew way back in the beginning that Randi and her family were each going to get Steve and Steve's family's share of their $250K as well once they managed to pull the wedding off. Good job on the producers' editing too in the previews leading up to the finale....making us believe that somebody actually stood up and objected during the ceremony. LOL

They weren't trying to run her life; they were trying to keep her from making a BIG mistake. It wasn't that THEY didn't like the guy, it was that she didn't KNOW the guy.

It would be WRONG of them to blindly support her under the circumstances they thought she was getting married under.

Agree with you about the money though
