I agree with you suspicions. The whole "we had to change the direction of the show" commentary was just BS to make the Coys feel better.

I felt the ending was really anti-climatic.....That whole family should spend their winnings on therapy. And what's up with the father? At the end, they had a little update and said something about the father's upcoming 50th birthday - I could have fallen off my chair - I will be 50 this year, and I thought the parents looked as though they could have been my parents!! I guess it must have something to do with the high altitude of Colorado affecting the aging process or something...The most pathetic thing of the whole show was the brothers and sister - how spoiled, selfish and psychotic are these morons? Perhaps they can all buy themselves new personalities. If my daughter would have pulled a stunt like that on us, I would have been so thrilled at the realization that she was not going to actually marry someone like "Steve", that I would have been elated....instead, this whole family made themselves look like poor-sports, no-sense-of humor, stick-up-the-a** idiots.

Okay, I'll start by admitting that I'm a shameless conspiracy nut - I'm always convinced the twists on all reality shows are much more "shocking" than they end up being or that we're not being told everything (okay, 1. Duh! I know, I know... and 2. Example: I still think Matt from Joe Schmo knew). So, it occurs to me that Steve felt really bad for Randi, who is just breaking down, losing it, and since part of being a good actor is being comfortable with ad-libbing... He made that whole speech thing up right then. He seems like a stand-up guy, and felt bad for her since her dad just cut her off and basically told her she was an idiot. I don't think he had any intention of making some grand speech about how great Randi and her family are and how amazing their familial bond is, but he thought, "Gee, folks. You really are that uptight. Can I possibly say anything to make it so Randi and her half a mil aren't sleeping on my wife and my sofa now that her family has disowned her? Hmmm...okay, here I go." One last thought...OHMYGOD, WHAT IS UP WITH PAT AND FIRE?! Contemplating arson, weird incest-type feelings for Randi, somehow managing to be the only guy I've ever seen NOT look adorable in a kilt... This guy should be committed.

yes. Maybe it was the editing, but they sure did seem to be in a better mood after they found out about the money. But, of course "it's not about the money".

Ladro, I'm not so sure about that. I think the original intention was to find a family that would kind of play along and make it a comedy, or even farce. I know if it were my family (and I was from an upper-middle class family) it would have been a far different show. My family would have gone along with anything I wanted, been supportive and had fun with Steve and his family. The comedy would have been in their expressions and their comments behind closed doors. In fact when my sister had her bridal shower her future mother-in-law "entertained" my parents' high-brow guests with anticdotes about her days in women's wrestling, throwing out such classics like "Well it wasn't too bad, except whan they smacked you in the boobs or stomped on your crotch" (you have to read that with a strong Texas drawl to appreciate it, and it's absolutely true). The looks on the guests' faces were priceless. In spite of our disapproval of her choice in men (and his family) we never had an attitude like the Coys. We did express their concern that she perhaps wasn't doing the right thing but it was her choice and we supported her. I think once the producers discovered how uptight the Coys were that they did change the show a little. That's why the first 3 shows were so much funnier than the last.

Melanie: This is not how I envisioned my sister's wedding! (did i say sister? i meant mine...because it's really all about me...pay attention to me! Look what I can do! I can cry on command!)Nameless, useless brother: She's only thinking of herself! (um.....uh....yeah.....get yourself another beer and shut up...) Mom: Tell it to everyone else, I dont want to hear it (paraphrased, but essentially the same level of uselessness. there...are...no words....that family(re:committee) is messed up.

I liked the ending. I think Steve saved it, and turned it around so Randi's lies seemed not as bad. She really did start out with a fun attitude and then had so much trouble with hurting her family. She had come too far in the farce to let it all go.I liked it, all of it. I think Randi is precious, I think Steve was great. Maybe I'm gulible but I believe that they changed the tone of the show because of the better drama the Coy's presented. Yes, her sibs were selfish and immature, but her parents were great. I enjoyed the whole show, and really loved the way the ending saved what could have turned completely mean spirited into something that had some heart. I hope to see more of Steve, he was funny and over the top when he needed to be, and made this show work.

29. "RE: Finale discussion - disappointed" |
I was disappointed in the ending, not because I wished to see any ill-will towards Randi and her family, but because the first few shows were so funny with Steve's antics, that I was hoping that the family would be good sports about the whole thing once they realized the joke. I imagined everybody sighing relief and laughing about the situation....Instead, these people obviously were way too intense, so the ending was very uncomfortable to watch. I think that if another show is ever done using an unsuspecting family as part of the joke, they should really make sure that they do more research on the stability of the family members - make sure they can take a joke!

Well we could have had Nelson from the Simpsons come out, point at them and go "HA HA". No but I agree, as much as it goes against my character I thought the ending was classy and appreciated it. And no way did Steve ad-lib that ending. He was performing his lines. And rather well at that. He did a great job.

Well it did make me wonder what would actually happen if someone objects to the wedding when they ask that. I'm sure they don't stop the wedding just because someone simply doesn't like the fact that the wedding is taking place (now if they said one of the people are already married that would be different). But what does the preacher do if someone objects without any real reason? My guess is that the preacher says, "Well thanks for your opinion" and continues but I'm curious what the procedure is. Any one know? I asked my sister to ask her ex, who is a preacher (he actually married my wife and I) so I'll let you know what he says if no one else knows.

I just don't get it. Since when do siblings get to run your life?? If I were getting married and my siblings didn't like the guy, I would EXPECT them to show up at my wedding and be supportive of me. These people acted like they could dictate to Randi who she could marry. That being said, Randi needs to learn the real value of $250,000. During her speech (before she found out how much they would be really getting) she said she did it for her family, that the $250,000 would change their lives. Now let's see, 2 parents , three siblings. $250,000 split 5 ways is $50,000 per person BEFORE TAXES!!!!. She was making it sound like her family could take that $50K each (before taxes) and never have to work again and live in luxury for the rest of their lives. Got news for Randi. Even the half mil before taxes isn't enough for that. Randi is as clueless as I thought she was.

LAST EDITED ON 02-24-04 AT 01:57 PM (EST)I know ---- I was thinking the exact same thing regarding the money. Just $250K? And split between the entire family? And that's before tax takeouts??? So....the parents can "retire" on their measly split? And what college is the brother going to attend on his share where now he "won't have to worry about it?" And where is the sister going to travel on her share........to Las Vegas for a weekend??? And what about the other brother..........he wants to move out and this can help him.......what, pay his first three months rent??? Clueless, clueless, clueless. I can't figure Randi and the $$ situation out. They look like they have some money, so you'd think she'd have a clue. That being said, I knew way back in the beginning that Randi and her family were each going to get Steve and Steve's family's share of their $250K as well once they managed to pull the wedding off. Good job on the producers' editing too in the previews leading up to the finale....making us believe that somebody actually stood up and objected during the ceremony. LOL
