"the one thing i still don't get"
is there anyone who can explain why randi NEVER acted like she was having fun? why she did not "play along" with steve for the big bucks...she knew this was a show to WIN money...so why would she be acting like it was a REAL wedding too? i mean if she wanted to convince her parents she should be really having fun with it.

i just don't get this part.
help

Yep, as a spectator, that certainly would seem most appropriate and realistic.

Maybe she knows the Coys don't know fun, or how to have fun.

I just don't think she was capable of faking it. That's probably why they chose her. They knew she would give them the reactions they wanted.

I don't know that she was chosen because of that (though it sounds right) but I definitely agree that she couldn't fake it well enough. But then, I don't know that I could've done any better. Her family is obviously an upper-middle-class family with high expectations of her. Her sister was mad because Randi wasn't having the wedding the way her sister had envisioned it.

Her sister! It wasn't her sister's wedding but her sis had it all envisioned in her head, the way SHE wanted it. These folks obviously had some real tight in-family gears and Randi knew it. It would be a real strain on a non-professional actor to keep up the farce in the face of her family AND with Steve there literally doing everything possible to make things go to hell. Heck, just being around someone like Steve acted to be would try the patience of a saint. Having to pretend to adore him? Yikes. If she could've pulled it off flawlessly, she would deserve an Oscar.

I know she can't even convince us she really loves Steve. So how does she expect her family to believe it? She needs to play along but she just doesn't seem able to let loose.

IMHO, For Randi, the lying about being in love with Steve was bad enough, and she felt terrible having to tell them Steve was the one, etc.

I think she subconsciously felt that if she actually ACTED the part, she would REALLY be trying to trick them-- so I reason that she just couldn't go that extra step (not only because she was SO not attracted to Steve) but also because she felt that that would be crossing a line that her family might not recover from so easily.

Saying something is one thing-- acting it sincerely is entirely different, and it seems a lot more duplicituous.

I agree with you. Randi seems like a very sincere person. She doesn't seem like the type of person who would fake falling in love with someone. I think it's exactly this quality that the producers were looking for and that's why she was picked.

She does seem sincere in some ways, but she must have a dark side as well. It seems like she really did hurt her family by doing this. Sure they'll get over it over time, but it's not like they really needed the money. I'm surprised someone so close to their family would put them through this.

Lots of people keep alluding to the fact that the Coy's don't need the money, but I didn't get that impression at all. I got the impression that they were an upper middle class family, but I didn't get the impression that they were so filthy rich that a million dollars between the six of them wouldn't have a significant impact on their lives. You would have to be pretty darned well off for that much money not to have a major impact on your future.

Yeah. Same here. Randi mentioned her brothers wanting to move out of the house and go to college, and not being able to yet. Didn't sound like they were hurting but.. well. Just. Normal, if on the higher-income side. But even if they make a nice income of $80K a year from job or other returning revenue, that's still a ton more than they'd make annually. A wise person could make $500 turn around so that they'd never have to worry about money again. Good on Randi for scoring. Looks like it was worth the strife she put her relatives through.

Gotta wonder how all the extended family and friends who were there are going to feel. I sense a sudden petition for loans on the horizon...

Personally, I just don't think she's that good an actor. What we saw was her pathetic attempt at acting like she was having fun. And since she knew this would be aired she didn't want to be too convincing then her friends might see it and think she really liked the guy, oh-horror that would make the perfect princess look bad! But, if she would have been paired up with a hunk, I bet she could have managed to make the act look a lot more convincing.
