PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.
As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

"Too Intrusive?" |
Get to work today and find an email and would really like to hear others opinion of it. I know we don't get the traffic we used to around here but there is more anonymity here and I am really interested in hearing some thoughts. My workplace issues a cell phone, tablet or laptop to employees. They are strictly for work and most of us have our own devices for our personal lives. Today, they announced a pilot program where our personal and business devices would be combined. Employees would use their personal devices for business purposes. Supposedly they would create a "business shell" (I am not the most tech savy, so my explanation may not be completely clear)on our personal devices, where usage and fees would be paid by the employer. According to them they would have no access to any personal information on these devices. It is being sold to us as way to free us from the cumbersome burden of carrying two devices instead of one. A burden I've yet to hear anyone complain about. It is voluntary as of now. Unless I have no choice, I will not be participating. Wondering if anyone else feels this sounds a little to intrusive into a employees personal life?

 Tribe!

We have had voluntary pilot programs that became mandatory before.

Everyone who hasn't complained about it should say, "No thanks, I'm fine with how things are."

I'm hoping very few are willing to sign up and this balloon doesn't fly.

I wouldn't volunteer either. The "business shell" would presumably isolate your personal stuff from your professional stuff on the same device. But that sounds like something that an over zealous, paranoid, or just nosy system administrator could override. And if the company was paying for the service, the administrator would be working for them. I don't think they can make you do it, however. If they tried, what would stop you from signing up for a service that they had no knowledge of? Which, BTW, I would do if they did insist on it. Actually, if you see it coming in the future, you might sign up for a service that you could use as a dummy private service to offer to them.

I'm not familiar with the "shell" technology mentioned here, but I think it's safe to say that whatever is on one device is accessible to anyone who knows how (or has the authorization) to get into it. I used to have PC's with both "Unix shell" and "DOS shell" which were operationally completely separate operating systems, but they both still resided on the same hard disk for anyone (including me) to get into.

Add my name to the HELL NO! club. Sounds to me like a move Big Brother (the George Orwell version) would instigate.

I have visions of becoming something akin to the Borg collective. All connected all the time.

The queen Borg was pretty hot though. Except for the metal parts.

Sounds like they want to free themselves from a lot of capital overhead costs by dumping the up front costs of hardware onto their employees.I say screw that. If a company thinks I need a computer or a phone to do my job, they'd dang well better provide it. If the path to work-hell is already being paved with the souls of the butt-kissers you mentioned, you should probably start polishing up your resume. But do it on your personal computer.
