Yes, I'm watching and so is a friend of mine IRL. I didn't even know there were diamond mines in Canada. It is interesting and I was so afraid we were going to see someone go through the ice and die. Fortunately, we haven't. So far. I felt sorry for Drew. I still can't figure out how they thought that all his problems were brought on by his own actions. Ok, he should have checked his gas tank that one time, but the others I didn't see as being his fault. Seems to me the newbies don't get much help or advice from the old timers. Not like RealityTVWorld at all! Ok, one more tidbit: I was at one of those Japanese restaurants last week, the ones where they cook at your table and if you're a party of 2 you sit with others. I mentioned this show and one of the guys at the table said he used to work in the field of gems and Canadian diamonds are considered SUPERIOR (in spite of the fact that the miners are probably watching hockey most of the time). Well, he didn't say that part about hockey, I threw that in. Watch the Cancucks all come out and say "But of Course" in French. Charter Member: Club Anti-DAW

LAST EDITED ON 08-06-07 AT 01:53 PM (EST)We were just waiting to see if Danny had the same problems w/the truck as Drew, who seemed to have all the bad luck. Interestingly, the truck DID have problems! So it wasn't 100% Drew...but Danny seems much better at being able to cope w/the problems and even "fix" some of them (like the over-heating). At first, we thought Hugh was a really gung-ho owner/driver, but it looks like he doesn't keep his equipment in very good shape. Have no problem w/him making big bucks, but keeping the equipment going strong is important too. They did a pretty good number on the viewers last night about what "might" have happened to T.J. Glad he was okay. Those pics of some truck going through the ice are creepy. Just hope it doesn't happen this season! We've heard that the diamonds are superior too. Our question is "how in the world did 'they' find those areas in the first place"?????????????

I'm wondering if Drew being left sitting around was the work of Hugh -- what a jerk -- or the producers, to generate drama. Jeez, this is their livelihood, they shouldn't be messing with them. I hope Drew changes his mind, goes back and earns some money this time. Rick was a lucky duck. Guess he ran across some caribou on the road, or at least that's how it looks. I can see how it takes a special kind of person to do this. Not an easy gig. Someone mentioned a friend who lived in Alaska. I watched just one episode of Tougher in Alaska. They have to go get their water, or have it delivered, because they don't have pipes and such. Guess the pipes and water would freeze anyway. They also showed how to build an igloo.

>Drew clearly has an attitude problem >and I think Hugh and >Rick told us why. >My message to truckers everywhere: > It's not the size >of your TRUCK that counts. Good one!!! LOL And so very true! >Gotta hand it to Hugh, >he got that old truck >going. Wonder how long >it took him in real >time. DH & I talked about that too. The guy must be a real wiz w/the machines as well to pull that one off. >That "trap door" thing creeped me >out. It's a death >sentence; no way out. > *shudder* Agree completely! Wonder if there is anyone who drives the roads to check on things...or if they just let "someone" discover the trap door or cracks, etc. on their own? This show is such a hook!!! Saw that about Tougher in Alaska. Now I know why I'll take heat, dust, rain, hail, & tornados on the prairie!!

well yeah, there is risk in flying in such cold too, that's why one would fly the stuff in before winter, but flying is and always has been the safest form of transportation. I'm sure it's still very cold in the "summer" up there, but the risk must be reduced significantly during the "summer", no? So why not just go ahead and fly what you need by plane (C-130) before winter even hits? Then there is the C-5 Galaxy that can carry way beyond what the C-130 can. The point is, the stuff can be flown in, but to add suspense and danger for the viewers, they omit this fact, and leave it up to the viewers to assume that the Ice road is the only way. Nope. This is a show about the guys they found stupid enough to do the job. Maybe it IS cheaper to truck it, but it's also cheaper to rent a uhaul to move furniture yourself than to just pay to have some professionals do it right.

LAST EDITED ON 07-18-08 AT 08:48 AM (EST)I'm also not sure what you do if a wind gust hits and your very heavy piece of equipment now lands a few hundred yards off the landing area in terrain you aren't allowed to tear up to go get it out and over to where you have solid ground. They say for the antarctic air drops they do get in the winter when you can't land a plane (in the summer they can land on landing strips, but in the winter if they land they are there until spring because of some physics I'm not going to look up right now) one of the biggest problems is getting people from the shelters out to where the stuff ends up landing. Wherever they can drop the stuff they still have to haul it to where they need it, and if you drop it in the summer you may not have enough solid ground to transport it from where it landed to where you need it and they aren't going to let you build a new road (with as expensive as that is on swampland during the summer) to every place the wind blows a several ton piece of something. I assume the drop zone would have to be far from the mine/rig/etc because you need to make sure it doesn't land on top of something it could crush. It would make more sense to build one airstrip even if you can't use it in the winter than drop stuff over a wide area and have to go dig up each piece and haul it around. The reason they don't drive trucks in the summer is there isn't enough solid ground to work with. How you get around that to get to wherever the wind blows something I dunno. ETA: And you do know they were doing this for decades before anyone decided to do a show, it isn't like they built the road just to have a show so there will be something suspenseful for us to watch. I also never got the sense they say the ice road is the only way. It is the way a lot of the heavy equipment already gets transported up there. If they had already gone to flying everything in I'm sure they wouldn't restart trucking just for TV.

LAST EDITED ON 07-18-08 AT 11:37 AM (EST)Ummm... So why don't we use aircraft to transport virtually EVERYTHING? Hey, just airdrop stuff in front of the local Walmart! Some of the reasons they don't are well stated by other posters; I think that some airdrops would make sense, but can you really, airdrop or land some of the huge, heavy equipment from one place to another safely? In many cases a truck is the best way to go. Also, if you watch the show, they are often moving things from one place "up north" to another. They'd need landing strips at everyone of these locations. ETA: Hey, I like the show too!

LAST EDITED ON 07-20-08 AT 10:23 AM (EST)You are right, Snidget, about them using planes for some of the items. Good link. To IHSP, welcome to the board. Glad you're watching IRT. They did address this issue about using planes several times during last season. You can see, though, that what Hugh has been hauling ("waste) from the rigs and what Rick hauls (trash), that those wouldn't be things suitable for planes. Further, it appears that everything is "delicate" because of the perma-frost, habitat, etc. and that dropping things from planes just wouldn't work in some situations. Seaplanes can land on the water, and obviously do during the summer season, but they are limited in what they can haul. No one would argue that the C-130 and C-5 wouldn't be able to transport, but no commercial ventures use those military planes. And, finally, just as in that rig move, they are just going from one short-distance to another (fifty miles they said), it would be difficult--and expensive--to build airstrips for that. The ice roads were there for decades before someone decided to show us what they do...and yes, it IS risky, and yes, those guys do take risks & chances for the money, for the thrill, and for the bragging rights............but they are hardly any different from any other type of "dare-devil" workers like on "Deadliest Catch." Just my opinion.

LAST EDITED ON 05-31-09 AT 01:39 PM (EST)DH and I just caught wind of this show and are hooked! We have been watching this weekend's marathon, trying to catch up for the season 3 premier tonight. We love it... more than Deadliest Catch! I am fascinated by the job and by the fact that I had no idea this job existed (for a while now, too! How long has Alex been doing this? I thought he said something like 20 years, but I could be making that up...). We watched all of season 1 with the exception of the last two episodes: our DVR recorded over them with the beginning of season 2. Thoughts: a) Holy mother! What an insane thing to do for a living. b) After watching Drew and his drama back-to-back-to-back... DH and I wanted to shut.him.up. When on his first day he had his truck on cruise control and was not even paying attention, I was angry... where is the respect for the ice road and its fellow travelers? c) I really enjoyed the camaraderie of season 1, hopefully season 2 (we are only a few episodes in) turns out that way. Anyone else gearing up (pun intended) for season 3?

Well, thank goodness I surfed over here and found these posts again! Didn't know we'd already missed ep 1 of the new season. Fortunately, by reading here, we were able to catch it on the repeat tonight and then watch ep 2. SO glad that Drew and Rick are NOT here! Can you imagine them driving the roller coaster! Will be interesting to see our favs Hugh and Alex back, but we're already liking Jack, George, & Lisa. Tim, hm, will have to see. Did anyone catch how long Jack has been driving there? Can't believe he could take those extra-long pipe casings over the roller coaster! He must be a really, really good driver to get loads like that. Whoo-hoo that the IRT are back!
