"Ranking Winners:"
It’s been years since I’ve made one of these lists mostly because it is pure folly; a list is never final or completely objective. With that in mind, this is a picture of how I rate the winners at this moment. For me, the best winners are those who relied on their social game in order to obtain a good position in the game, one in which he or she could influence the vote and avoid being on the block. With that in mind, I feel that players who needed Hidden Immunity Idols to advance in the game had faulty social games and are less deserving than others who did it on their own skills.

A few notes before I start the list: I only ranked first time players in this list. Seasons that crowned returning players all suffer from too much production interference to be accepted as real Survivor seasons.

I'll be posting them in groups of 4, trying to put up a new group each day.

1. "The Top Four:"
LAST EDITED ON 12-28-18 AT 02:08 PM (EST)

1-Kim Spradlin: In my eyes, Kim played the perfect game: She used the One World concept to get to know everyone in the game right from the start. In her tribe, she stood back at first, waiting for the right time to let her voice be heard. Once she took more control in the decision making we saw someone who was very decisive in her actions despite having many options at her disposal. The mind games she played on Troyzan and Alicia to get them to eliminate Michael and Tarzan respectively were simply magnificent.

2-Todd Herzog: He was the first child fan to win the game that he knew inside-out. Seizing the concepts of “The Art of War” he installed Aaron as leader of the tribe bringing some order to a tribe that could have been completely dysfunctional. That gave him a numerical advantage at the merger and he used those numbers to keep everyone unaware of his true plan, alternating between eliminating the opposing alliance members and his own tribe mates, keeping his solid core of three up to the end. It was at that final tribal council that Todd assured his victory, killing it with his answers.

3-Earl Cole: Another player who seized the opportunity offered by living on one beach at the start of the game. His season coming right after Cook Islands, Earl first made sure that the African Americans were solidly aligned and that no one would drive them apart. When Dre informed him that an alliance of 10 was formed during a group exploration of the island, Earl countered by forming an alliance with the ones that had remained behind to build the Shelter. While the Explorers’ alliance had only been designed in case the whole group of 19 went to Tribal Council and was dropped as soon as they were split into two different tribes, Earl never lost count of who was in his alliance and who wasn’t. When it came time to swap, Earl picked a team of “Shelter Builders” and while it looked to the viewers that it was Earl and Yau Man alone against 7 others, the merger was actually fought between 6 “Shelter Builders” and 3 “Explorers”. From there, Earl got into his ideal Final 4 and while the surprise Final 3 guaranteed his win, it is important to note that Earl had a plan for a Final 2 and could have won even against Yau Man.

4-Tom Westman: Like Kim and Earl, Tom took full advantage of getting to know everyone right from the start. Tom took leadership of Koror, a position that can be very dangerous but Tom, like no other, carried that position to a win. In the tribal portion of the game, he used Ulong’s softness to build a “Koror Strong” mentality in a tribe that looked weaker on paper and that gave them a unique winning streak that lasted to the merger. It’s interesting to note that Tom himself would have liked to lose a challenge or two before the merger but when a tribe is on a roll it’s hard to stop it and it wasn’t going to be the pathetic Stephanie and Bobby Jon who would be able to profit from competing against Koror’s B or even C teams in the last four ICs. After the merger, Tom's series of Immunity wins were much more impressive and even when he didn’t have the protection of the necklace, he and Ian found a way to fool Caryn, trick Gregg and completely corner Katie to get their way. His last two immunity wins sealed the deal.

2. "Numbers 5 to 8"
5- Danni Boatwright: Danni was tribe leader before the merger and only a freakish tribe swap deprived her of the numbers when the game became individual. She was able to become the perfect follower and she was the only one to realize that Rafe was driving the vote for Stephenie’s alliance. She understood that Rafe saw himself as a master manipulator so she started manipulating him, marveling at his schemes, making him feel the genius that he always thought he was. Rafe was indeed playing a great game, focusing on destroying Stephenie’s game, letting her take the blame each time they blindsided one of their scumbag allies. Her best move was to offer Rafe a Final 2 deal even when Rafe said he could only offer her the Final 3. From the nice position she created for herself, Danni managed to influence the vote to get to Rafe’s ideal Final 3, one in which he felt both women would take him to the end. Of course, Danni had to win the Final Immunity but she was going against the pathetic Stephenie and the very ordinary Rafe so she liked her chances and she didn’t miss. The vote was mere formality.

6- Natalie Anderson: Farmer Dale warned everyone on his tribe: If they let the twinnies make it to the end they’d backstab everyone. His tribe heard his warning and got rid of Nadiya but that only stoked Natalie’s fire. She stayed quietly behind Jeremy until his surprise elimination but then out of nowhere Natalie seized control of the game, eliminating the opposing alliance and blindsiding members of her own alliance. Even when Jon Misch proposed an easy Final 3 deal where the two remaining couples would place their strongest member with Natalie sitting next to them, she didn’t stop, backstabbing Jon to claim authority in the game. It was all brilliant manipulation and another example of a player that can switch gear from follower to leader and have the perfect timing to do it.

7- Nick Wilson: Nick played one of the best social games we’ve ever seen. After a shaky start where his enthusiasm for the game got noticed by his tribe and put him in danger, Nick started creating one-on-one alliances that put him at the center of the information hub. The Mason-Dixon alliance he had with Christian got him on the right side of the Jessica vote. He then quickly connected with Davie and Carl who had been left hanging by that surprise vote. His connection with those two, while it remained unnamed, was the key that opened the door for Nick to find his advantage and know who had other secret powers.

The swap could have been problematic for Nick but he quickly connected with Mike, forming the Rock Star alliance. He also befriended Angelina forming a Jabeni connection that seemed to dissolve at the merger but would eventually prove vital.

At the merger, Nick’s connection seemed to gel into a powerful “Strike Force” alliance but the Goliath members of that alliance got cold feet one after the other. Nick realized that Mike wasn’t ready to jump ship on the Goliaths so he regrouped with Davie, Carl and Christian, using all their advantages and sources of information to overtake the Goliath alliance. Then, inexplicably, Gabby and Christian turned on Nick and Davie when they went after Carl. That move gave the advantage back to the Goliaths but they had been so broken by then that not even Christian’s elimination could keep them together. Nick pounced on that opportunity, reviving his Jabeni alliance and even trying to insert Davie in the mix. At that crucial part of the game, he was smart enough to make a fake idol that he pretended to find himself, giving him time to look for the real idol without interference. It didn’t exactly work as he had planned but it was all part of playing the game hard and having fun doing it. When Mike turned the vote on Davie, blindsiding Nick in the process, the public defender realized he needed to count on no one but himself. He won the Final 3 Individual Immunity Challenges and then a brilliant Demonstration during the Final Tribal Council sealed the deal.

8- Wendell Holland: Being on the Naviti tribe was both a blessing and a problem for Wendell. It was a blessing because Naviti dominated the challenges, sending Malolo to the first two dates with Probst. The problem though was that Naviti was a typical D-tribe, probably the worst we’ve seen on the show since Samburu. Both Chris and Dom saw themselves as leader of the tribe and, despite Wendell tremendous conciliation efforts, those two never came close to working together.

The swap didn’t help Wendell, keeping him in Naviti with the same two rivals. Things didn’t start well when the undermanned Malolo seized on the Naviti division to get rid of Morgan, an ally of Wendell and Dom. Neither panicked; they used the swap to make new allies with Donathan and, more critically, Laurel.

The merger was the occasion to get rid of Chris, opening the door for the new Naviti tribe to decimate the New Malolo tribe. With Laurel’s help, Wendell and Dom were able to navigate all the way to the end. There, Wendell’s excellent social game narrowly prevailed against Dom’s schemes.

3. "Numbers 9 to 12:"
LAST EDITED ON 12-31-18 AT 11:36 AM (EST)

9- Tina Wesson: After Borneo, SeeBS realized that they had a hit with a problem; this amoral game seemed destined to be won by evil players like Hatch had brilliantly demonstrated. Many viewers complained that the format rewarded an #####. With the power of editing, Burnett changed that perception with the winner of season two: Tina was a devout Christian, a practicing nurse and, by all appearances, a nice Southern mom.

That was in real life because, in the game of Survivor, Tina was probably a bigger villain than Hatch had been. Of course, the editors didn’t really show that but it was all pieced together through post-game interviews. From the start, it was never shown but Jerri, Mitchell, Colby and Tina formed an alliance during the trek. They added Amber as their fifth to have a majority. Before they ever got to camp, Kel, Mad Dog and Keith had been designated as the first three boots. On TV, we didn’t really see Tina as being part of the alliance but she was. We saw Tina being friends with Mad Dog and Keith and being the most sympathetic towards Kel, the cheater (something else that was never shown; SeeBS protecting the reputation of a soldier but Jeff, much later, all but confirmed that he had smuggled meat into the game.) Ina’s friendliness served the editors well but it was all feigned. Tina had ulterior motives; she wanted, by all means possible, to avoid receiving votes at Tribal Council because, in season 2, prior votes were more powerful then hidden immunity Idols, just ask Mitchell.

Speaking of the musician, Mitchell’s elimination in episode 4 (the episode that, to this day, remains my all time favorite) was the first occasion for Tina to impose her game play. She had followed Mitchell and Jerri’s plan from the start. After all, Tina and Jerri were allies and even good friends in the first few days of the game. The losing streak changed all that. Ogakor had expected that the challenges would be a lot like they had been in Borneo and that the two tribes would alternate wins and losses but The Outback’s challenges were a bit more physical so Tina realized that they needed Keith’s strength. During the walk to TC, she approached Mitchell about voting out the useless Amber instead of Keith but Mitchell would not even consider voting against one of his friends. Tina changed her target, going after Mitchell and, despite a tie vote; she got her way because of those fatal prior votes.

Her next move was to repair the fracture in the tribe; she did that by promising that Keith wouldn’t make it to the end and that it was only done to save Ogakor because Mitchell was done. The repairs were so effective that when the merger approached and the Ogakor women met the Kucha women, not only were they able to convince their rivals that the three were tight but that they were running the show together. (That, in large part, convinced Kucha that Colby must have received prior votes and influenced their critical decision at the first merger TC)

Tina was the one that received information from Kimmi about Varner’s prior votes and that guided Ogakor’s vote at the critical Tribal Council. After that accomplishment, Tina and Ogakor could have followed Tagi’s game plan and decimated Kucha but Tina was smarter than that. She recognized that Elizabeth was a devout Christian and that Rodger was tied to her like a doting father. The two women became friends and Tina realized that Elizabeth would be much more trustworthy than Jerri who by then, had become disliked by everyone in Barramundi. Like Todd would do much later in China, Tina kept alternating the votes between former Kucha and Ogakor members, knowing that, with Colby, Keith, Lis and Rodger in her back pocket, she was always in control. It was that control that was rewarded during the Final vote.

10- Brian Heidik: Mr. Freeze told us he was on a business trip and he was in total control for the whole season. The unsavory incident between Ted and Ghandia could have derailed his whole game, (I personally think Ted should have been disqualified) but Brian, the used car salesman, tricked everyone into thinking he was their best friend. Ted saw him as a brother, Jan loved him like a son and I suspect Helen had a crush on him despite their age difference. She certainly trusted him completely and was therefore set-up for the blindside of the season. Only Clay saw Brian for the villain he truly was but Brian knew he could be true with the restaurateur because they were alike. Because of the huge difference between his true nature and the perception he gave to his allies, I say that Brian had the best social game ever.

11- Sandra Diaz-Twine: I’m putting Sandra right up here with Brian even if she played a completely different game. Few winners were as honest as Sandra ever was and that honesty probably played a big role in both her wins. Here, I am only judging her Pearl Island win. She was honest but she wasn’t nice, that’s for sure and we saw that in the very first confessional of the season when she turned her anger on Jeff.

It’s interesting to note that Sandra probably doesn’t win if she had gotten her way with the votes after the merger. After the Rupert blindside, Sandra was dead set on eliminating Fairplay and Lil but we have to wonder if she could have won with anyone else in the end. Like Vecepia before her, Sandra played an “anyone but me” game but she was much more hands on than the Marquesas winner. When Burton threw a challenge to get rid of Christa she turned the vote against him. When Fairplay asked for her vote at Final 5 she made a promise to him but had other ideas all along and she booted Burton a second time. Sitting next to the biggest goat of all time, her victory in the final vote was a sure bet (!).

12- Chris Daugherty: Few players had as much fun playing the game as Chris did. Few managed to take the lead of a tribe without anyone realizing who was truly in charge. Propping up Sarge as the figure-head leader of Lopevi, Chris decided who should go and who should stay. He used the men versus woman format to perfection, realizing that Lopevi didn’t need the muscles that the young men could provide. Of course, Chris made a big mistake when, just before the merger, he got rid of John Kenney because that gave the numbers to the women. But Chris had diagnosed the women’s alliance and he knew a few things: Julie and Twila weren’t together and Twila was much more comfortable with the men than she had been in Yasur. From his point of view, he still had the numbers but then Twila was spooked by Julie and returned to the safety of her alliance with Scout, Leann and Ami.

Despite the men being voted out one after the other, Chris kept chipping away at the women’s divisions. Lopevi had been portrayed as the “War Tribe” while Yasur, led by the lifelong hippy Scout, wanted to be the “Peace Tribe”. Lopevi found peace when they got rid of all the young men but Yasur never really had peace. Their biggest point of discord was Eliza and as soon as he identified the frictions the law student was creating, Chris tried getting her voted out before himself. With help from Twila, Scout and his own wife who had bonded with the women during the family visit, Chris got his way: Leann and Ami were ready to get rid of their nervous puppy. That should have been a three day reprieve for Chris but, with Scout and Twila’s help, he convinced Eliza to vote against Leann in the most memorable Tribal Council ever.

From there, it was mostly smooth sailing, Chris dominating the challenges and Twila earning the wrath of the women for flipping on them. In the last joke of the season, Chris encouraged Twila to make no excuse for her actions because he wasn’t going to apologize. What happened? Twila stood her ground, argued and fought throughout that Final TC while Chris begged for forgiveness.

4. "Numbers 13 to 16"
LAST EDITED ON 01-01-19 AT 12:40 PM (EST)

13- Natalie White: Many place Natalie at the bottom of their list because she rode Hantz’s coattails and they believe he deserved the win but I’m not one of them. Natalie didn’t play a strong game, for sure, but she knew she could beat Hantz in the end so she did everything to stay on his good side. The Elizabeth and the Jaison votes were critical moments for her and both times she proved her loyalty to Russell and made him realize she was better for his game than the other two. What impressed me most of her game was that even if Foa Foa had been decimated, she had such a strong bond with Laura that she could still have pulled it off much like Danni had done before her.

This more or less divides the winners I considered did a great job and the ones that had big flaws in their games.

14- Aras Baskauskas:
Aras had one great fortune in the game: His alliance with Cirie. The funniest thing is that, at first, Aras wanted Cirie gone at either their first or second TC. He would nver have won without the player who proved the one that was the glue to Casaya. Cirie held the tribe together and she directed most of the votes that led to Aras’ ultimate victory. Every time someone flirted with Terry, Cirie sensed the danger and got rid of the threat. Had someone other than Terry or Aras won an immunity necklace then Aras would have been sacrificed by the Casaya women. We can say that Aras won in large part because he kept losing immunity.

15- JT Thomas: There is something wrong in a season where everyone wants to see one of their rivals win the whole game. After the merger, Timbira had the numbers but did everything wrong because they all fell in love with JT. There’s even a question about JT’s ability to play the game without someone like Stephen telling him what to do.

16- Mike Holloway: He did a solid job to get the Blue Collars to a majority at the merger but he misread Kelly’s game, thinking she was with him when she was actually closer to Rodney because she knew whom she could beat. Throwing that final immunity challenge was a waste as was the decision to save Joe without even solidifying an alliance with the guy. Voting out Rodney would have been a much better choice than Lindsey.

Mike’s social game was atrocious: He got on everyone’s nerves with all the work he imposed on his tribe and not recognizing their efforts. Later, he became practically hysterical when he heard Rodney plotting with Carolyn, Tyler and Will. There was also the Auction fiasco where he showed he couldn't be trusted. His behavior was so wrong that Sierra and Dan pulled away from him. His game was doomed but an idol and some immunity wins saved his bacon.

5. "The Rest:"
17- Yul Kwon: With the all powerful idol in his pocket, Yul never entered a Tribal Council where his future was at risk. At least Terry was at risk at Final 3 but the surprise F3 abomination saved Yul. There had never been a season with as many twists as Cook Islands and ALL of them went in Yul’s favor. Yul is a smart man and it would have been interesting to see him play in a real season of Survivor but we never saw Yul playing Survivor. Production gave him the game.

18- Ethan Zohn: Ethan was a very sociable person, liked by everyone. Throwing the challenge after the surprise tribal swap was a strong tactic because it insured Boran’s majority at the merger. The problem is that Ethan didn’t use his connections to guide the votes. That he let to Lex who was much too paranoid to leave in control. The first two votes after the merger should have turned the game against Ethan’s alliance but Samburu was much too fractured to profit from it. Ethan didn’t have to do a thing to win the whole thing.

19- Sophie Clarke: Sophie’s social game was atrocious: She was seen as a spoiled brat and no one approached her to talk strategy because she was a dead end. A player would approach the trio of Coach, Albert and Sophie to plead their case or propose a new plan and she’d ignore them. At least Albert would listen and even consider some of those schemes but Sophie never considered making a move of any kind. In a season designed to see either Coach or Ozzy win, it was refreshing seeing her win the Final Immunity Challenge to eliminate Oscar for the third time (!) and to see her whip Coach’s butt in the Final Tribal Council but her game was much too bland to put her any higher. She only got the jury's vote when she cried at the Final 5 tribal council when she finally realized how she was being perceived.

20- Denise Stapley: She is the only player to have attended every Tribal Council in her season. That gave her tremendous arguments to present to the Jury but she had no control in all but the very first Matsing tribal votes that the argument should have been turned against her. For her, outlasting was more a question of being forgotten. Mike was an idiot to vote out Abi-Maria instead of Denise at Final 5. His argument for keeping her was incredibly flawed: He figured that Denise gave them a better chance of beating Malcolm in the F4 immunity challenge than Abi-Maria but, had she been the one to beat Malcolm then she’d have been even more unbeatable in the vote. Mike had to recognize that his chances of winning existed only with Denise out of the game and by beating Malcolm himself. He actually did beat Malcolm in that fateful challenge but Denise was still there to foil his game.

21- Jenna Morasca: If we were to listen to her arguments then we’d have to rank her much higher but her story isn’t entirely believable. She claims that she gained more information from Dave than she gave him during their “date” to set up the swap. She also claimed that she wanted Heidi picked by the other side so that they could control the two tribes but Heidi had no control in the new Tambaqui and she survived their vote mostly because Jeane had nothing to offer the men. We can even say that Jenna herself had no control in the new Jaburu where Deena and Rob were running the show and Shawna captured all of Alex’s attention. She even claims that she gave her immunity necklace away because she knew Rob wasn’t voting her out but the real reason was that Jenna wanted to quit. Right there, that desire to quit even when the end of the game is in sight makes her a poor winner.

22- Adam Klein: What did he do exactly to win the game? I’d say nothing. Along with Zeke, he was completely isolated for the Millenials first vote. Then, with vewry little contribution from Adam, the strong Millenials had no problems beating the older Gen X at every immunity challenge. The swap was very beneficial for Adam, putting him with a majority of Gen X ready to target obvious couple of Figgy and Taylor. The merger saw the regrouping of four initial alliances: the core Millennial alliance; the Millennial outsider alliance of Adam, Hannah and Zeke; Chris's alliance; and David and Ken's alliance. While the latter three alliances initially formed a majority coalition, it eventually splintered as David and Zeke targeted each other. Zeke rallied together the remnants of Chris's alliance and the core Millennial alliance, while Adam and Hannah joined David's alliance; David's alliance ultimately won out but it left Adam with very little power in the game. The funniest thing was that the jury rewarded Adam because they saw that he was the one that got Ken to eliminate David when we saw that all the work in convincing Ken was done by Hannah. She played a much stronger game than Adam but she didn’t have a dying mother...

23- Vecepia Towery: Many place Vee higher marveling at her ability to switch alliance and make sure the vote was always anyone but her. I can’t agree because the vote was never her not because of her tactics but because she was inept at the game. There was always a bigger threat to eliminate in the first fluid game if Survivor’s history. Also, she found herself in a Final 4 where Neleh was the only one she could beat but Neleh never should have survived that F4 Council if Paschal had played to win. Neleh’s surprise win in the Final 3 Immunity Challenge eliminated Kathy and sealed Vee’s victory.

24- Bob Crowley: Gabon probably saw the worst game play of all time. Fang took control only after so many tribal swaps and immunity loses gave them the opportunity to eliminate all their Kota rivals. That left Bob mostly playing alone and benefitting from Sugar’s daddy issues.

25- Michele Fitzgerald: I’ve always said that the jury is always right and Neal was part of that jury until that weird twist stole his well-earned right to vote. So, I’ll go by what Neal said to Michelle has he was forced to exit the Jury box: Michelle was useless, doing absolutely nothing to merit the title of Sole Survivor. (I wish I had Neal's exact quote because I thought it was perfect) Without Neal there to vote, the jury was dominated by dumbasses like Jason Chris and especially Debbie whose bitterness sealed the vote against the much more worthy Aubry.

26- Tony Vlachos: No winner was louder than Tony but no winner had been luckier than him either. His first stroke of good luck was having casting strangely putting two cops on the same tribe and giving Tony a gullible ally who believed a cop would never lie! The second big stroke of luck was providing him with someone as loyal as Trish. The was she stayed with Tony despite all the bad treatment he gave her was a sickening demonstration of why battered wives stay with their violent husband and why they even defend them. For me, it was an example of the Stockholm Syndrome: Tony kept Trish prisoner of their alliance and all she did was help him escape “justice” that Jeff’s snuffer provides in this game. Trish was the one that got Kass to flip at the merger, a move that Tony thought was impossible. It was Trish who kept Jenna in the alliance after Tiny backstabbed her allies. Tony was so obsessed with the women taking over the game that he kept Spencer, the only player who could beat him in the end, much too long. In fact, Tony would never have gotten the opportunity to eliminate Spencer if Kass hadn’t beaten the youngster in the Final 4 immunity challenge. Then, in a final huge stroke of luck, Woo took Tony to the Final 2 even if his only chance to win was by keeping the obviously huge goat Kass.

27- Ben Driebergen: No winner had been luckier that Tony up until season 35 aired. Ben’s game was done, over, finished when he lost the Final 4 immunity challenge and with Chrissy, Ryan and Devon set to vote him out like we had seen in the 34 previous seasons. Then, out of the blue, Jeff told Chrissy that he Immunity Challenge win had an “advantage”: She wouldn’t be voting with the other 3 but simply choosing one player to accompany her in the F3 while letting the other two compete in a fire challenge. What kind of advantage is that?

28- Jud “Fabio” Birza: An idiot can win Survivor.

Where is Richard Hatch, you ask? For me, Hatch is “Hors-Category”: His victory cannot be compared to anyone else’s because he was the only one playing the game in the original season. He deserves accolades for inventing the game’s basic strategy, even understanding the game’s first flaw; winning immunity can be a bad move. Letting Kelly win the final immunity challenge was pure brilliance and shows just how far ahead of the average player he was.

6. "RE: The Rest:"
Hey Michel...how the heck are you!!

As you can see, I’ve been away from these Boards for about two months but decided to venture through today to see if anything is posted for the upcoming S38 “Edge of Extinction” premiering Feb 20th. OH MY; what a nerve-racking theme! *snort*

All kidding aside, I can see you’ve been busy between seasons. As always, an impressively thorough and comprehensive ranking! I feel bad no one has shown you any “love” even if just a laudable comment. Thank you for only including “real” seasons in your ranking.

Well, Aruba has come to the rescue. My response ranking will only include my Top 10. And the envelopes please...

1 – TOM WESTMAN: The most perfect castaway to ever play this game. The late great golfer Bobby Jones had a memorable quote, “The game is played on a five-and-a-half-inch course...the space between your ears.” It was Westman’s leadership, charisma, and challenge prowess that dominated the season. Ulong’s futility was a direct result of Koror’s dominance led by MVP Tom Westman. Tom’s presence had defeat in the five-and-a-half-inch spaces between every pair of ears on Ulong even before Jeff uttered his two words, “Survivors ready!” This was confirmed when Bobby Jon (arguably the most physically imposing castaway for that season) said to Jeff during a Ulong TC (that became a weekly occurrence thanks to Westman,) “Tom is a Man among men…” he can’t be beat.

When he found out his closest ally (Ian,) the tribemate he treated as his own son was going to turn on him, most in that situation would have flown off the handle and provided a classic Survivor blow-up that would have had Production licking its chops. But not Tom Westman...he stayed cool and stated very as a matter of fact, “That’s all I needed to hear,” calmly walked away and set his focus on controlling HIS OWN fate by winning out and earning a spot at FTC where he won going away.

Final words on the best to ever play the game. In a post-game interview, he stated his strategy coming in was to not put an initial target on himself by being the dominant player. In his words he said, “I was hoping I might be able to hide beneath my premature gray hair.” Well, we all know how that turned out. And why...because you are...who you are...who you are.

2 – DANNI BOATWRIGHT: With 10 seasons in the books, many fans were beginning to feel in order for a female castaway to win, she would have to either ride someone’s coattails, be so pathetically inept it would punch her golden ticket to the end, or perhaps use her attractiveness to Ho-down and get the necessary mileage from a skanky showmance. I present to you Danni Boatwright. Yes, she was smokin’ hott, but never considered using the skanky Ho tactic. That, in itself, ranks her high on my list. She proved to be much more than looks...she emerged as the best female athlete that season. Props for using her birthday during the season to bolster her social game.

What was also impressive is during the sappy and obnoxious Love Ones Reunion (when I need to borrow my mom’s insulin kit to administer a double dose to myself) Danni did NOT get caught up in all the hoopla and stayed grounded to the game. She kept that same discipline during the Survivor Auction to obtain the IC advantage. And yes, the way she manipulated Rafe, the self-defined puppet-master, was vintage Survivor. Oh...did I mention she was smokin’ hott? LOL

3 – BRIAN HEIDIK: Personally, I think he’s pretty scummy, but Brian at #3 is a pristine example of putting my personal feelings about an individual aside and ranking in the true spirit of the game. He had to have felt snake-bitten when his early fate was in the hands of Scatterbrain Jan selecting him via a schoolyard pick where, on paper, he was placed on the weakest of the two tribes. But much like Tom with Koror, Brian was the MVP on Chuay Gahn mounting a tribal turnaround putting his tribe in a position to pagong Sook Jai.

Brain took another hit during a RC when his wealth was showcased on video for all to see leaving the rest of the castaways feeling, “why should they give this guy a million?” He followed up that hit by taking the final three ICs and earning a seat at FTC. At FTC Brian had to clear yet another hurdle with enough Bitter Bettys on the Jury to make the vote closer than it should have been. But in the end, one of the best to play the game prevailed.

4 – TODD HERZOG: Now see; Aruba can rank even a challenge joke high on the list. More often than not, we see how being a Superfan can be detrimental to one’s game by overthinking or applying former tactics not applicable to the current game in hand. This did not happen with Todd. Every move and decision Todd made during the season was instrumental to his and his alliance’s advancement. Todd did not win any challenges but enjoyed the last three rewards being selected by three different individuals. A true testament to his social game.

His loyalty to his alliance rewarded him a seat at FTC where his FTC performance was one for the ages. Coupled with arguably one of the worst FTC flops from “Doe-eyes” Amanda all but assured his victory.

5 – KIM SPRADLIN: Much like Tom Westman, Kim treated us to a wire-to-wire dominant victory. She clearly benefitted from the “Battle of the Sexes” format. And if that advantage was not enough, the worst twist in Survivor history IMO was Sabrina being forced to hand over her HII to someone on the other tribe (like DUHHHHH, who else other than Gay Colton) who was able to use it to decimate the male tribe. Nevertheless, she played an outstanding game socially and physically.

Her IC run in the end (winning four of the last five ICs) probably benefitted her alliance more than it did for her individually contributing to an all-female F5. She found a HII she never had to use. As long as she wasn’t medivac’d on her way to FTC, Kim’s victory was a forgone conclusion.

6 – JT THOMAS: Statistically the most dominant winner in the history of the game. Not only did he take the title by a unanimous vote, he did not receive a single vote throughout the entire season...AND as an extra scoop of gravy on the mashed potatoes, wins the fan favorite “Player of the Season” vote. No other winner can claim that trifecta. Had he tripped up on any of the last three ICs he won, he would have most surely been Anti-Darwined out of the game proving his dominance.

And for all you social butterflies out there; consider this.... As one of the youngest players (24) casted that season, at a RC when questionnaires were answered about the remaining players, it was JT who was selected by most as the castaway one would “trust the most with their lives!” I thought that was astounding. Personally, I’d struggle with trusting a 24-year old with my pizza delivery...never mind my LIFE!

7 – NICK WILSON: Our most recent sole survivor makes my Top 10. He came out of the gate playing hard. That can be a risky approach early on as we saw with Nick, but he weathered the storm with his...Alliances. I don’t know what we saw more of last season: Tears from Squonk or alliances from Nick. Mason-Dixon, Rock Star, Jabeni, Strike Force...

He knew right from the start he would need to separate Gollum Girl and Christian, but never got consumed with that agenda. His proactive approach to playing the game served him well to advance, and the Squonk/Christian dilemma took care of itself when Gollum Girl got bitten by the Green Monster called “Jealousy.” In the end, Nick wins handily even without the other half of the Mason-Dixon Line’s vote.

8 – MIKE HOLLOWAY: What red-blooded American does not appreciate a nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic? I know I do. Although a few chickensh!ts who wanted the game to be more like some juvenile teenaged summer camp were initially rubbed the wrong way. Unless of course, when that same approach was most instrumental to assure his tribe a majority at the merger. Even though Rodney stated he was getting irritated with Mike’s 100 mph approach to the game, he flat out said he “respected” Mike. Another tribemate specifically stated, Mike was the “glue holding the tribe together!”

The very traits a parent would want to instill on their children is essentially what put Mike’s back against the wall. Yet it was that proactive taking-the-bull-by-the horns admirable work ethic approach that assured his advancement in the game. He achieved this through impressive IC wins and his proactive success finding a HII. Naturally, those on the Jury were not happy they were out-hustled, out-worked, and out-played by the quintessential “Blue-Collar” player. At FTC, Jenn proved to be a voice of reason when chastising the bellyachers on the Jury for being bitter against Mike’s hard work and gameplay. In the end, enough Jurors got it right rewarding Mike with a satisfying and deserving win.

9 – NATALIE ANDERSON: I had a coach who always said, “It’s not how you start the game...it’s how you finish.” If that coach was watching S29, he’d be beaming at Natalie. She had arguably one of the most impressive second halves of the season in Survivor history. Embarking on the game and having to look over at a noted racist pig in John Rocker had to have been beyond unsettling for her. It even festered into a massive blowup in front of both tribes—a confrontation that could have been damaging for her going forward. But that was in the first half.

Post merge we saw every tactic that defines a winner. IC win, finding a HII, forming alliances, breaking alliances, manipulating players. All in all...PROACTIVE approaches and not being satisfied to let the game come to her. The 5-2-1 final tally was mostly due to a daughter voting for a mom and the other finalist getting her vote from a Fiance. The other votes convincingly were casted for the winner on how she finished.

10 – RICHARD HATCH: Yes, the winner from the season that started it all appeared to be the only one who had a finger on the pulse of the game. But it’s THAT finger that puts him in my Top 10 being so far ahead of the curve compared to the other castaways during that inaugural season. His ability to catch fish kept him around as the “provider.” Just as he utilized that strength, he also recognized his weakness—being inept in challenges. We’re not talking about a Tom Westman, Mike Holloway, or Terry Dietz “letting Kelly win the Final IC.” LMAO! Kelly was going to win that Final IC hands down regardless. His brilliance was WAY BEFORE that Final IC and how he was able to posture each of the other two in the F3 to have to take him to the Finals.

The “basic game strategy” he “invented” was to make lying, deception and villainous behavior acceptable all in the name of winning a million dollars. And it would take 10 seasons for a player with integrity not needing to advance by coattails or ineptness to be added into the fraternity of Survivor winners.

7. "Comparing Lists"
Hello Aruba, I'm doing fine, thank you for asking. In fact, I'm even happier now that you're back. How are you?

You're right about this season's stupid gimmick. It's obviously an attempt to give the win to Joe. He's a tremendous Survivalist but not that great at strategy so, of all the people that could wind up on extinction island, he has the best chance of returning to the game.

Now, back on topic: My first observation is that your list is very close to mine. In fact we have 7 common winners in our top 10, 8 if we count Hatch which I have as "Hors Catégorie". So, all in all we are practically in agreement.

I do have a few comments though:

1- You have to be kidding about Colton's idol being the worst twist in Survivor history. Nothing is worse than the F3 that was sprung on the CI contestants. I could also name three dozens that are worse than that. The most important thing is that Colton's idol had a nul effect on the game. He kept it when he left and the Msfots would have allied against the roosters even without the idol.

2- Bobby Jon was actually very poor in challenges. We saw how easily Rafe, Jaime and especially Brandon continually whoopped his ass in Guatemala. Actually, Jeff was the best athlete in Palau but, like many others, he wasn't tough enough to go through the game and quit because his ankle hurt.

3- Don't you think there was something abnormal about everyone wanting to see JT win? I mean, Brandon, Coach and Beebe all said at one point that they'd be happy to see him win and he wasn't on their tribe. JT had it way too easy in Tocantins and proved to be a dumb player later.

4- About Mike, you wrote: "At FTC, Jenn proved to be a voice of reason when chastising the bellyachers on the Jury for being bitter against Mike’s hard work and gameplay." I found it very interesting that, during the reunion, Jenn raised her hand when Jeff asked who would have voted for Rodney over Mike. Granted, Mike still had a 5-4 advantage but who knows what would have happened if Rodney had pleaded his case. I know those polls mean very little but Jenn had been voted out for a while so she had nothing at stake at the end of the game contrary to Sandra in PI.
Why would Jenn vote for Rodney? Because Mike had an atrocious social game compared to Rodney. Consider that!

5- Hatch's brilliance was on display in the first 15 minutes of the season when he sat in the tree trying to organize the group. Nevertheless, letting Kelly win was surprisingly bright because I remember the play-by-play from viewers back then who were SHOCKED by his decision.

8. "RE: Comparing Lists"
Doing well myself...other than a little Reality Show withdrawal; but that will change next week. I’m not thrilled about the returnees, but a majority will be newbies. We’ll see how it goes. I’m not familiar with the format for this season, but given your synopsis it appears booted castaways will have a chance to win their way back into the game. That certainly does bode well for Joe.

It didn’t dawn on me until I read your comments that we have that many common names in our Top 10s. Although the rest of the list is where we would differ greatly. My response to your comments:

1 - OK, after further consideration I would rank the purple rock travesty in Marquesas as the worst twist ever, but Colton getting the idol literally placed in his lap is a close second. Just because an idol was not officially played does not mean it had “null” effect. Quite the contrary in One World. Several castaways stated had Manono lost either of the first two ICs, Colton was gone. When they did eventually attend their first TC, Colton already had the gifted idol. Jonas even said Colton went from the first voted out to possessing a ticking bomb that gave him newfound power.

Listen, had Colton possessed that idol because he proactively searched and found it while the other dudes were sleeping, or while the alpha-males were bonding in the ocean, then shame on the Manono tribe. But the manner in which Colton came into possession of the idol was a complete and utter farce thanks to one of the worst twists ever. That farce was a game-changer.

2 - Yes, Jeff was a physically imposing castaway...until an early season injury changed that. For the record, it was not your typical “hurt ankle.” It was later determined his tendon was completely torn away from his ankle bone and Jeff needed extensive surgery to repair it. Ah OK, he officially “quit,” but players have been medi-vac’d for FAR LESS critical ailments than THAT.

The point being made here is during that season, Tom got into the “five-and-a-half-inch space” between many ears to mentally and psychologically beat down the competition as Bobby Jon literally attested to. Mentally beaten, psychologically defeated, “Man among men,” quitting...whatever verbiage you choose to use, Westman’s dominance contributed to that mindset.

3 - You appear just as astounded that players would want to see JT win as I was astounded the cast, much of whom were older, would trust JT “with their LIVES.” It would certainly explain why he received no votes to be booted and every vote to earn the title Sole Survivor. I can understand getting no votes when you are pathetically inept and suck at challenges...actually I would expect it. But that was not the case with JT. I’m surprised a fan who covets social gameplay would not regards that as socially off the charts. It was enough to put JT in my Top 10.

4 - In addition to being the voice of reason at FTC, Jenn also stated during the season she really liked Rodney because he made her laugh and was a lot of fun. So, I could see her ultimately voting for someone she really liked. I did not interpret Jenn pointing out Mike’s hard work, hard play, and hard approach to the game as why everyone MUST vote for him to win...it was more do NOT use that as a negative or criticism to vote against him and essentially give the title to someone else by default. Simply put, Mike’s nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic and approach to the game owned the season and thus put him in my Top 10.

5 - HMMMM, I believe Hatch’s fishing and providing for his tribe extended WELL beyond the first 15 minutes. I also would say it took a hellava lot more than 15 minutes to work Rudy, an old seadog who dropped the word “fag” as often as the others said “alliance,” into promising to take him to the Finals or vote for him if on the Jury. Forget Social “Game...” for someone like Hatch to get that assurance from someone like Rudy was Social “Genius.”

It continues to be comical when someone pathetically sucks at challenges and you spin it as great “strategy,” thus it continues to be preposterous to believe Hatch “let” Kelly win. He (and Rudy) didn’t have a chance to beat Kelly in that Final IC. A Hatch-Sue-Kelly menage-a-trois was more likely than Hatch or Rudy outlasting Kelly! LMAO!!

9. "RE: Comparing Lists"
1- For some odd reason, production liked Colton (so much so that they invited him back in the Blood versus Water season) so of course they stessed his underdog status by editing in every sentence that put him in danger in the episodes where Manono wasn't going to TC. HOWEVER, and this is key, by the time manono went to TC, the Misfits alliance was in total control and the vote was between Matt and Bill. The idol had absolutely NO EFFECT on the outcome of that season.

2- Where did you hear that Jeff needed surgery after the season? From what he said at the reunion he only needed rest. While on the island, he was able to walk and to work so there was no emergecy need, just a low threshold to pain. And Bobby Jon simply sucked at challenges even when Tom wasn't there to play with the space between his ears.

3- I really enjoy social game play but the way everyone in Tocantins fell in love with JT was unnatural. They gave him the million.

4- Mike's poor social game put him in my bottom 10.

5- Yes, Hatch worked hard to stay safe but his first 15 minutes impressed me a lot. From the start, he had a plan and understood the needed tactics to win where everyone else thought the prize would be awarded to the best person out there.

Also, Hatch wasn't that bad in challenges. He helped Tagi to a few wins before the merger and won an immunity himself. Sure, Kelly was probably going to win that last IC but what I applaud was Hatch's understanding that HE shouldn't win.

10. "RE: Comparing Lists"
1 - I’m not talking not about Production and some spun “underdog” role. I’m talking about ACTUAL players that season who confirmed Colton was NOT long for the game...until that Idol was placed in his lap. Colton does not get a sniff of ANY alliance if not for the gifted idol thanks to one of the worst twists of all times.

With Blood vs. Water, Production needed a former gay castaway whose significant other was willing to join in and play as well. Colton was a recent gay castaway who fit the bill and had a partner willing to join. That factor weighed more heavily than any “love” affair with Colton.

2 - I read a number of sources upon the conclusion of Palau about Jeff requiring surgery. In one of them it disclosed the severity. From what I remember at the Reunion, Bobby Jon even referenced Jeff’s injury as serious. Jeff injury aside, fact is, most everyone’s performance came off as subpar compared to Tom’s dominance and the way he got into the opposition’s head.

3 - And the way the players “fell in love” with Kim in One World was NATURAL? LMAO!! The castaways in One World “gave” Kim the million as well. The big difference—in One World the winner was female and in Tocantins the winner was male. Nuff said.

4 - Mike wasn’t going to win any Miss Congeniality contests with his “Blue Collar” work ethic and proactive approach to the game, but earned the respect he needed to win the game of Survivor. Afterall...the guy was casted as a BLUE COLLAR for crying out loud—even though Production did a horrible job casting a majority of the other "Blue Collars." THAT proactive work ethic places him in my TOP 10...and will undoubtedly rank him low on your list.

5 - Hatch “wasn’t that bad” in challenges...but Bobby Jon “sucked” at challenges. LOL. One thing about you Michel...you never fail to make me laugh!

Bobby Jon did not perform poorly in the team challenges. In Palau he was on the short end of Westman’s dominance. In Guatemala, he held his own helping his tribe win several challenges (not having to face Tom.) In his two seasons, BJ did not have enough opportunities to definitely say he “sucked” at individual challenges.

11. "RE: Comparing Lists"
1- You know as well as I do that Troyzan, Tarzan, Jonas and Leif didn't want a thing to do with Matt and his roosters. Colton's idol had absolutely nothing to do with Manono's votes.

2- I don't feel like watching the Palau reunion just for this argument. The fact is that Jeff was able to walk and work on his leg so he should have toughed it out. Amy O'Hara twisted her ankle in the very next season and she didn't quit.

3- In Tocantins, Brendan, Coach and Debbie all said that they'd be happy to see JT win WHILE THEY WERE STILL IN THE GAME! No one said that about Kim. Also, JT was down in numbers at the merger so he should have been easily voted out. Kim, on the other hand, worked hard to have many options at the merger.

4- Mike won only because he had an idol and won immunity. I value strategists much more.

5- You're missing a couple of points:

- We can judge contributions to Tribal Challenges and Hatch helped his tribe more than BJ ever did.

- In season 1 the challenges were much less physical so Hatch was able to help his tribe reach the merger with even numbers. BJ failed twice, not winning a single immunity in one.

- BJ was thought to be a strong physical player and, as such was picked early in Palau but he simply was no match not only for Tom but for Ian and Gregg also. With Sean and Dirk, Hatch was able to match up with Greg, Joel and Gervase.

12. "Where would Chris fit in?"
Considering Chris was voted out early, especially at a time when he had no idea that the Edge of Extinction would save his butt, I'd certainly have to place Chris in the big group of winners who had big flaws in their games. Where exactly? Probably just behind Vecepia who never lost control of her game and switched alliances on numerous occasions and always at the right time.
