"Episode 5 and 6 program descriptions" |
From the NBC website:THE CONTENDER #105 03-27-2005 8:00PM The competition continues to heat up as the east and the west face off in another difficult challenge. This time they compete in an urban obstacle course to determine the next two contestants to enter the ring. So ... nothing about the fight! I still think it's the Peter-Anthony rematch. THE CONTENDER #106 04-03-2005 8:00PM A smoldering hot day and a medicine ball challenge force the East and West teams to push themselves to the breaking point. When one man's unexpected decision changes the plans of the team, his respect is lost forever. Sugar Ray Leonard and Sylvester Stallone host. Stallone also serves as Executive Producer. I think this is about Miguel. In additional footage in episode 4, Miguel indicates that he wants to fight the easiest fighter left on the East, which (at the time) was Jeff. Ishe tells him that they've been "saving" Jeff for Joey, and Joey has been working his guts out for the team, so the West would oppose that match. Miguel says that it's his choice, not the team's, whom he fights. Ishe finally gets up and leaves. In another clip from episode 4, we see that Joey's hamstring hurts, and he limps up onto the scale for weigh-in with Jackie. He tells Jackie that he's trying to cover for the sore hamstring, and the West will hold him back a couple of weeks to let him recover. So ... I think Anthony fights Peter next week, and the week after that (ep. 6) the West is still letting Joey heal, so either Miguel or Tarick will get the nod. I think Miguel tells the team that he'll fight a tougher guy ... but then he calls out someone else -- someone the team was planning to save for Joey (the show set us up for that with the scene of Ishe asking Brent to come up to the line before Ishe called out Ahmed -- why else specifically tell us that a boxer isn't wedded to the team's pick for him when they were showing it?). Thoughts?

On Alfonso's site, he talks about Miguel and Sergio both wanting to pick easier opposition, and Ishe and Alfonso working to sabotage the plan. In fact, Alfonso says that they at point arranged for the West to throw the challenge in ep. 4 so that the East would win and pick Najai to face Sergio. So the suggestion that that might still be a factor certainly makes sense.

4. "Thanks" |
It seems like Burnett is including extra clips on Yahoo! because they are consistent with the editing but they just didn't fit within the time constraints. Last week, we saw Najai explaining why he sleeps in the closet. which sets up Najai for this week's story. It seems to me that Alfonso's comments are totally consistent with the clip of Miguel and Ishe ... and would help set up this story in Ep. 6.Therefore, I think Burnett would be OK with Alfonso's discussion. But just in case Burnett wants Alfonso's comments sanitized (it's happened before!), here is the key part: Some of the Westside members found out that Sergio and Miguel were thinking about not following the plan to earn your spot in the Final 8 by fighting hard opposition. We had all agreed who was going to fight whom, but Sergio and Miguel were thinking otherwise. Therefore, Ishe and I talked to Juan, Brent and Najai. I told them, "We are going to throw the challenge away, but only if Najai fights Sergio." The Eastside agreed to do it. We all knew Sergio didn't want to fight Najai because of Najai's style. Unfortunately, the rest of the Westside team didn't like the idea of throwing the challenge away, but Ishe and I didn't tell the Eastside team because, in case they won, they could still continue with the plan.

>>I have no clue what is going on any more.<<Sounds like my life. But seriously, I heard that and assumed they meant cumulative totals. It seems to be settling dowwn at about 8 million viewers per episode.

7. "Episode 7 details" |
LAST EDITED ON 03-28-05 AT 12:59 PM (EST)OK, so the boxer who loses respect in Episode 6 for fighting a mismatch isn't Miguel. Well, here's the advance info for Episode 7: THE CONTENDER #107 04-10-2005 8:00PM THE CONTENDER EPISODE 7-- When the East and West are challenged to clean up the ghetto, tempers flare as each man struggles to do his part for the team. With only a few boxers left to fight in the first round the power to choose who will fight will be key. Sugar Ray Leonard and Slyvester (sic) Stallone host. Stallone also serves as Executive Producer. Slyvester? ROFL. Doesn't sound like any real spoiler value here. After all, isn't the power to choose who will fight always key?
