Jonathan is shown as the poor black guy. Jesse, a (quote) "loud and lovable country boy" (with a shaved head). Pretty obvious what was "fuelling" Jesse in this fight. His trainer, also had a "shaved" head? Kinda weird yet? What was Jesse's reason for wanting to fight Jonathan? I couldn't find one. Unless it's because? Oh! Here's somethin' even more weird. The show at the end has a shot of Jesse infront of an American flag in all his glory. Is there a message being conveyed here, and by who?

LAST EDITED ON 03-11-05 AT 04:56 AM (EST)Shaving your head these days has no real meaning any more, every one is doing it. Are you impling that Jesse is a racist? I doubt it. If he was racist he would not be able to stand being surrounded by so many ethnic minorities. Maybe you are reading into something I don't see. We are all racist in one way or another. But the American flag symbolizes land of opportunity regardless of race, creed or color. I don't want to get into a debate about our country. Nothing is perfect and there is no such thing as utopia. I was mad at jesse for picking jonathan but I think since Gomez set the bar real high as stallone put it, I think jesse was trying to show Ishe that he aint no coward and like Gomez he too could take out one of the best guys on the other team. Thats that West Coast mentality for you. But I don't think Ishe can keep playing this shiet talking game anymore. He will be fighting sunday and may the best man win.

Good response, very well said. Let's put that first part to rest now.Amazing how the west has been the underdog both times and has won both. It's smart of them to try and take out the strongest east boxers. It messes with their team psyche. It's pretty obvious that Ishe will have to step up or else the team will not respect him. I hope he takes out Ahmed and I think it's a pretty good bet he can win, but we'll see... By the way, I like your siggie!

I read in another thread that Johnathon had retired in Jan 2004, and only came out of retirement to participate in this show. Given his clearly advanced age and his comments after the fight, that seems very credible. I don't know anything about boxing, but Johnathon looked pretty slow to me for that weight class. I think Jesse thought that Johnathon was either over the hill or rusty.

Reid did retire in January of 2004 after fighting Roni Martinez. I thought Reid would do much better than he did. After all he was 165 pounder that dropped weight class to be on the show. He also fought some big names in his career, and his only loss was to Joppy in 2000. His heavy hands and strong arms should have carried him into the final four, but one needs to rotate those big arms and swing those big hands to wins matches. As far as the whole race card goes, most fighters be they White, black, yellow, red, brown, or pale (The Irish) shave their heads. Get your hair tangled in laces once and you will be on the bald eagle band wagon. There is allot of racism in boxing, its mostly fan based. Most fighters don’t care what color of skin the guy punching them in the head has. Racism from boxing fans has no boundaries, its an emotional sport, and people say and do things they wouldn’t normally when they are that emotional. Think your parents were nuts at your youth Baseball or soccer game? Check out the parents and families at a youth boxing tournament when a lanky country boy from Erie CO, shows up to fight a short stout city kid from Montebello CO. The crap these people scream from both side of the ring is crazy. And people don’t often hug, kiss on the cheek, and say I love and respect you to people they hate.

I watched the show last night, and I have a question: Can anyone explain to me why it really matters if you win your challenge? All the boxers eventually need to square up, right? Maybe you can go farther if you face a weaker boxer early on, but eventually, you'll face someone decent. I just don't get why you'd even care if you won the challenge. It seems like a waste of twenty minutes of television.-ESB http://www.thevirginbook.com

The advantage is the choice you get for the match. Not only does your team get to choose who will represent, but that team also gets to choose the opponent.Strategically, winning a lot of challenges can be an advantage because the losing team gets absolutely no say in who fights whom. If a team can look at the big picture, they can sort of arrange some pecking order to pick off the other team. If one team could win all 8 challenges (not highly likely, but for arguments sake...) and then win all their matches, the other team is obliviated.

I would like to see them mix up the challenges a bit, how about a game of scrabble? Or jeopardy? Lets see who can produce the most blood in their urine in a three-hour time frame. Or lets see how tough these guys really are; make them live with my wife, and the last one to jump off the roof wins the right to challenge. The contenders think they are so tough, please, iv gone 12 year long round with the crazy big breasted Norwegian and I’m still standin. P***y’s

As for the shaved heads, one main reason is it helps the gloves of the opponent slide off and make blows more glancing than direct. Same with vasaline on the face.

Yes it seems that vaseline has many useful purposes LOLMy top comment has nothing to do with the comment made below. Please dont read into things that aint there. It was an observation. Nothing more, nothing less. Did anyone see Jesse kiss Jonathan as they shaked hands? Yup, yup. He kissed him on the right cheek.

Hi everybody, I just wanna say that Jesse Brinkley is an excellent human being. I am Mexican and we still talk and try to hang around all the time. He is so funny and charismatic...so the comment above is waaaaayyyyy wrong. He is an all american boy but that aint got nothin to do with his shaved head and picking jonathan. The only reason he picked jonathan is because he was the guy with the best record in The Contender. He wanted to step up and he did. That's all heheheAlfonso S Gomez www.alfonsosgomez.com

Welcome to the boards! Is that really you, Alfonso? If it is, great fight! I enjoyed your performance in the first episode and look forward to seeing you featured again. You were an inspiration to underdogs everywhere! I know you can't tell us anything about the outcome, but what was it really like living with the guys?
