"NCAA tournament(s) complaining thread" |
At this point, i have two theories on the seeding.1. Someone in the committee was truly desperate for a Fantastic Four joke. 2. This thing is more rigged than a Crimean voting booth. In totally non-important news, I'm in on the Coke Zero seed draw this year. (Win a prize of escalating value each time a team you drew advances.) I didn't participate in the original -- the one with the good prizes -- because I was saving my black caps for double points days and the seed draw was loaded towards the bottom of the bracket to a degree many found comedic. Of course, then double digits happened. a lot. This your, the prizes mostly svck and the top tier is a poor substitute for the first go-round. But gee, at least I've got every #16 in the tournament! Whee. Sort of. Let the deliberately blown referee calls begin. It's possible to draw both sides of a matchup if you play enough times: I have all four 7-10 matchups and one 5-12, so I'm guaranteed five free 20z coupons from the first round. There are 1,750,000 total seeds available. Exactly four of them are #1s.

1. "RE: NCAA tournament(s) complaining thread" |
A while ago, someone (I think byoffer) was asking about the relative successes of the Carleton Ravens, who are currently the Duke/Kentucky/MSU of Canadian college basketball all rolled into one. They've just won their 10 national championship in the past 12 years and 4 in a row. Their cross-town rivals, University of Ottawa, were second this year and third last year.I think one of the reasons for this success (for both teams) is that they run the Capital Hoops Challenge where they invite NCAA teams north of the border for a tournament in August. This year, the teams were the Syracuase Orangemen and the Wisconsin Badgers. Syracuse, of course, went to the Final Four last year and went 25-0 to start this year and got a 3 seed. Wisconsin is a #2 seed this year and is a fixture in the NCAA tournament. Carleton beat Wisconsin 95-82 and lost in overtime to Syracuse 69-65. And I think they were playing mainly their starters though I couldn't know for sure. Carleton's coach was actually absent because he's also the national team coach and had national team commitments. http://www.ottawasun.com/2013/08/23/carleton-ravens-lose-to-syracuse-orange-in-overtime-in-pre-season-basketball-game-at-canadian-tire-centre Carleton could be the Gonzaga of the north but as the article above points out, it's unlikely that you'll ever see them in the March Madness tournament even though they could shock as much as any team from Wichita, VCU or Butler.

Dayton. You would think this would mean a flood of Coke Zero winners. You would be wrong. After what happened last year, some genius in Atlanta decided the best way to protect the company was to shortchange the #11 seeds. Seriously. Each region has a total of 2500 #11 pieces available. Contrast this with 43,750 #12s and 13,750 #10s. For the record, my best seed is a #5: VCU. Only 499 others available.

Congrats to North Dakota State, for pulling the upset and winning the first tournament game in their schools history. Great game. Great finish.

Do you think Baylor was going to pass up a chance to tell Nebraska that they should have left the Big 12? I'm pretty sure there was a little extra motivation there for Baylor. Which is why I didn't pick an upset here!

He's not entered in the billion dollar bracket challenge, though. Just on Yahoo!, so Buffett's off the hook for this year and can reinvest that billion dollars into even more billions.

Yeah, I saw the post on the RTVW bracket board about that last bracket not being in the billion dollar challenge. I just clicked on the Leaderboard from the billion dollar bracket group, not realizing that it captures everyone in every bracket. Goes to show how astronomical the odds are of having a perfect bracket in just the first round of 32 games, much less for the whole tournament!

That might be part of it but my guess is that the talent pool and the level of parity in the women's game isn't quite as deep as in the men's game. It's almost like baseball where only 8 or so teams know they've got a shot heading into the season.

Definitely the parity and large pool of great talent spread amongst the schools. Looking at the BPI and Kenpom ratings for the teams this past year, they were pretty closely bunched together, meaning any one team could beat another team on a given night. Instead of a team being an overwhelming 80-90% favorite to win, it's more like 55-60% with a lot more "upsets" likely to occur.

I'm going to be lazy and not bother to research this myself -- seems to me that within the last four-five years there was another opportunity for the same college to win both Men's and Women's BB tournys (it may have been UConn). I'm pretty sure they did not get both titles -- or maybe they did -- but has it happened?
