"Stupid sports rules"
A space for anyone to post sports rules that they think of as stupid or unjust, or even to query how to play balls six inches under water and in a bunker.

I was reminded of this one at the Crystal Palace Diamond League meeting last week.

In the olde days an athlete was allowed one false start and was disqualified if they did it again, then the entire field was allowed one false start and any of them false starting after that was disqualified, now there are no second chances, if you false start you are out.

Well IMO the definition of "false start" is wrong! If someone takes off after the gun has sounded but within 0.10 seconds after the gun has fired then they are deemed to have false started based on tests that show the human brain cannot hear and process the information from the start sound in under 0.10 seconds. Well I'm sorry but surely the rule should be that one is allowed to start after the gun has sounded, if athletes want to try to jump the gun this doesn't change the disqualification rules, but the 1 in a million start doesn't get penalise its recipient.

Lovely cheese Mooney

1. "RE: Stupid sports rules"
It's a tough rule but it's the same for everyone so I don't have much of a problem with it. Allowing one runner to false start and then DQ anyone on the second was bad because the slow starters would intentionally false start first to make everyone react slowly. Giving everyone one false start meant that it would take forever to run the race. Now, it's simple: Wait for the gun and go.

The main reason I don't like basketball is that, at the end of the game, it becomes a good strategy to foul the opponents when you are trailing. By definition, the rules should be such that it's never good to foul.
