"Falling consumer prices?"
Color me confused.

Heard something this morning about Obama wanting $250 for each social security recipient because there would be no cost of living increase in social security this year due to falling consumer prices.
By law, cost of living adjustments are pegged to inflation, which is negative this year because of lower energy costs..............
.......The Labor Department reported Thursday that consumer prices had declined 2.1 percent since the third quarter of 2008.

My thoughts are not so much running on the socials security side, but more on the report that consumer prices have dropped.

I've not noticed any drops - except in gas & that is still popping up and down (local early this week was $2.27 then yesterday was $2.35).

But as far as other prices? Have you noticed any decreases in what you are paying for groceries? I've noticed several things that I buy where the quantity has been reduced & the price has stayed the same (I figured that was their way of keeping from raising the prices - you pay the same but you get less).

What price decreases have you seen?

Locally, the only savings in my grocery budget have come from my slow shift towards the few store generics which actually compete for quality with the majors. (A very few exceed the base level.) Beyond that, my sale searching and coupon clipping -- with the later always difficult around here -- have remained pretty stable, mostly from lack of available options/resources for making them better. Prices have either been stable (a very few here and there), taking a slow trend upwards (basics and meats), or oscillating just so they can increase by 60% one week, cut by 40% the next, and call it a sale (fruits & vegetables, many frozen items, and just about all of every snack aisle).

There are certain food departments where I can't save money no matter what I do: the only way to cut back costs on greens is growing my own. I do as well as I can on meats by looking for discount coupons on packaging, but that's an irregular savings at best. Sometimes a ridiculous one -- anyone want four pounds of premium loin lamb chops for nine dollars? -- but it's not something I can count on.

I'm doing better on home and apartment support items than I did last year, but much of that can be credited to my Costco membership. Laundry detergent has hit just about an all-time low for me, other cleansers are following suit, I don't pay anywhere near as much for paper now, and even the rubber gloves are cheap. Of course, this all comes with a price of its own: that membership is going to need renewing.

My clothing and personal support items (and let's pretend you already said it, okay?) can't be used as a universal model. (I reworked that sentence a lot before picking a working-if-not-workable version.) Those costs are moving up, but they never do anything else.

Transportation... insurance remains the statewide nightmare which no one ever wakes up from. Gas has been dropping, but I had one major car repair this year and don't want to face another. *knocks wood* I do fully own my vehicle, which is a help.

I already sighed about my energy bills: there's no decrease expected locally, and all savings will be due to my just using less whenever possible.

The apartment rent is likely to increase sometime next spring. I'm bracing, but I'm not sure what I'm bracing for just yet. Could be fifty dollars. Could be a few hundred.

Recreation costs have been lower, but there's a punchline there: thank you, Coca-Cola! I usually go for a film, and most of my solo, pair, and group movie excursions have been paid for by the Twist-Text-Get program. Clubs, shows, concerts, and the like have had more low-cost options available, but I'm not always paying for those to begin with. Some of my casino-going friends are seeing their ticket comps start to increase -- Atlantic City's not doing well in the recession, and one of the results is more shows opening up here and there. I bought less new books this year, and that bothers me: if novels go any higher, libraries will have to be guarded like banks. I can get an entire TV season for the cost of a single new hardcover: ten hours of viewing versus two hours of reading. This is a problem -- and I think it's a societal one.

*looks back* Huh. I don't think it was bothering me that much until I stopped to work it out.

Sticker shock at the supermarket: Food prices poised to rise

If there's any silver lining to a recession -- albeit a thin one -- it's that consumer prices typically go down. Make no mistake, deflation is a sign of a sick economy, but at least the net effect of cheaper prices for the basic necessities -- food, clothing and shelter -- helps folks get by when they are struggling to make ends meet.

But consumers should brace themselves for things to change, especially at the supermarket

Am I the only one that missed seeing prices go down?

I'm still waiting for Barack to tell us how he plans to pay for the additional $13 billion these extra Social Security payments will cost the government.

Oh, wait. That decision will be in the capable hands of Harry Reid and Charles Rangel, with support from Nancy Pelosi. Now I feel better.

NOT!

Apparently the formula for calculating Social Security increases only works when inflation is positive? *head tilt* While I don't advocate decreasing benefits due to negative inflation, I can't justify a $13 billion program to "fix" the formula just because inflation isn't where it usually is.

I got a 0% cost of living increase this past year too.

*waits for mass influx of liberals with pitchforks and torches*

LAST EDITED ON 10-15-09 AT 12:54 PM (EST)

http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/surveymost?cu

Run the reports and you see that it's energy cost that drove it down: Oil at $150 vs. $70.

You can do just food, energy, etc. We use it to adjust our fees so there year there was no adjustment.

Edit: Medical had the highest increase.

Edit2: Here is all the individual numbers in a table: http://stats.bls.gov/cpi/cpid0909.pdf

Don't believe it, inflation is ongoing, I mean really the two hotdogs for $2.00 are now two hotdogs for $2.50. Onions and chili extra. It's just that more and more people are having to resort to cheaper goods and services. Except milk, milk is dirt cheap these days, the Labor Department must be seriously into milk.

no one i think is in my tree

The only area that I've REALLY noticed savings is in our housing. The value assessed to our house is down about 20%, which makes our property taxes much less. As long as we have no plans to move, I'm delighted to see the assessed value of the house go down.
