I feel nothing but contempt for W and Dick, but I don't think that hoping for a change in leadership as the result of their deaths by poisoned fish is the way to go. I'm overwhelmed by the tragedy that Katrina has wrought. I've cried so much over the last days, and felt anguish, sorrow, anger, frustration, fear, the whole gamut of emotions. For me, the picture brought a brief moment of levity, something I really need right now. In no way do I think of my moment of levity at the President's expense is me laughing at the loss and tragedy of Katrina victims. Sometimes, in the darkest of times, the only humor is dark humor. I'm sure this is a tough time for you and so many others who have experienced the loss of someone they loved in a disaster, and I hope you'll find comfort and joy in some of the stories of hope, kindness and selflessness that are coming out now. While I did find the Bush angle humorous, and feel our dear president is deserving of the insult, I also was reminded of images on CNN of fish laying on their sides, dying, and of a bird covered in oil in the filthy water, unable to fly (can you say Exxon?). After which I e-mailed IFAW asking if anything was being done for wildlife in the area. I agree that we have to lighten it up at times. I also believe the humor is a way of remembering how safe and secure those are who failed those who sufferred and died -- human, animal, fish or fowl -- and how much more work needs to be done. I am not sure how you read my first post, but I think you missed the point. Let me try again. TJ made a joke. Some people think it was funny. Some people do not. Wanda shared a personal experience which explains why she doesn't like this brand of humor. Several posters responded to her by sensitively giving condolences and a couple even stated their own opinion as to why they were not offended. I think that was all great. I think when you asked her not to "pee in everyone else's coping mechanism" without acknowledging her tremendous loss, it came across as insensitive. But maybe that's just me. FTR, if you were to drag your father's unfortunate death into it every time an ANWAR joke was made, I'd hope you would receive a little sensitivity as well. I'd also like to point out that this is the first time I've heard Wanda mention the loss of her sister.   Top

I hoped the first words at the top of the thread (visible on the board) would warn people that the post might be offensive to some. And of course I have a reputation for being pretty snarky. But in any case, I'll answer your questions. This picture satirizes the seemingly insensitive reaction from the president. Satire is, by nature, very sharp and pointed. It often draws a laugh along the lines of "Ohmigod, that's rude!" Humor is one way that many people cope with horrific circumstances. It's not for everyone. I'm probably thicker-skinned than some, because I deal with horrific news all the time. I found this funny because it provided a break from the hundreds of images I've seen this week. Is it necessary? It is to some. And there should never be a ban on satirizing the president, from either party. You'd put editorial cartoonists out of business. No disrespect intended to your family. I know the pain, because I went to three funerals that September myself. I'm fortunate that none were relatives, but I understand your reaction. These reality show contestants need a reality check!   Top
