I'm sorry but this whole leg was about 40 to 50 miles of driving of following the ribbons. What ever happen to getting a map and finding out where you need to go? Yes you’re in the bush so you can get some great shots of Africa but you got those same shots when they were on the main roads. Why don’t they just give these guys GPS units with the destinations mapped out because that’s what TAR’s has done with all the ribbons.

The directions, I think TAR calls them clues, are so simple even to tell them they’ll be driving through a town before you get to the right water tower. Now if the teams were smart enough to read they might figure out that they need to go further plus I think the mileage is listed in the directions so why not watch to odometer?

I’m I glad there is a lot less bunching but this TAR’s is just boring except for the scenery as usual and last weeks foot race. I’ve have never seen such a bunch of losers who can’t read directions.

And Can Lenny and Squiggy say anything that is not inflammatory or bitchy? Oh how do I wan these losers to be gone because every time I hear or see them it’s like fingers on a chalk board.

Ok…my rants done for this second because I have to go back to work....

How about this:

You know how sometimes when, say, a candy company wants to make more money, instead of putting the price of their product up, they just put less in the box (or whatever)?

OK, so...

The producers didn't want the challenges to be so difficult, but then they couldn't have smart people, 'cause that'd be dull. So they got dumber people. Now the challenges still look hard and the producers don't have to put as much thought into everything. Everybody wins.

No?

Good I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought the challenges were stupid.
The one question I have is why couldn't they just run over the branches the TAR producers strategically placed.....oops I mean "elephants" knocked over? Granted some of the branches were to big to just drive over but some were small flat ones and I would think with a jeep like that it could do some four wheeling.
I guess the instructions said move move them out of the way. And nice promo TAR did that sd Rob and Amber had to go thru "Crocidile invested waters" Oh, no how will they ever accomplish that???
Whatever they were in a JEEP and it was like 20 feet wide.
Stop leading us on TAR.....ALL THE CHALLENGES ARE STUPID!!!!!!!

I agree, this leg was lame. Easy as it was, TWO of the teams had to got back because they missed something. How pathetic.

Agreed. I thought this was an unbelievably short and easy episode. The first teams left around 5:30 am and I bet it wasn’t that late when they finished – I wouldn’t even be surprised if it was close to noon. I suspect that the ease of it was intentional to set up the timing of the next episode. But I miss the way it was in the first season when they got a lot less information and had to figure more stuff out on their own.

On another point, if they are going to have non-elimination episodes (which I would be fine without), and an episode is going to be so easy that there is virtually no way the previous last place team can move up, then that episode should be one of the non-elimination episodes. Lyne and Alex had to get two replacement vehicles and deal with not being able to drive a stick and the brothers were still not able to catch up. Way, way too easy.

Welcome to the boards Cipher. That's exactly what I was thinking. The brothers had no chance of catching up unless another team really, really screwed up. When TWO teams have to go back and the brothers still come in last, there is something wrong.

The something wrong was that the brothers spent "hours" at the first water tower when it was made out to be a few minutes. On the Early Show they said they never saw another team the whole day. So they did deseve to go but the task were too easy and too close together. I'm sure R/A finished at noon after leaving at 5 am.

8. "Where were the brothers?"
From the Video section of CBS's Amazing Race page:

Lost - :42
Brothers Brian & Greg lose their characteristic charm and laid-back attitude when they become lost in the bush. This just wasn't their day.

Still Lost - :58
Brothers Brian & Greg, lost again later that day, regain their sense of humor even if they don't have a sense of direction.

So, it was the brothers' inability to read the clue and find red-and-yellow route markers that lost them the race. (FTR - I didn't watch these clips)

Also from that page, a fun video in which Phil gets lost on the way to pit stop, which I did watch. Their satelite phone was fuzzy and they couldn't use cell phones. It surprised me that Phil was driving. He said the toughest part was staying ahead of the other teams, so that he could meet them at the pit stop.

Phil's da man.

Thanks for the info. From an armchair quarterbacks's position it was still too easy. Just goes to show that no matter how easy they make it people will make mistakes or just not pay atention. Some advise for furture contestants: Read the clue! And after you've finished reading it, read it again! And then repeat.

Still, I'm *glad* they lost due to their own screwups rather than the luck of the draw with slow cabs.

I did watch the clips and I disagree that that is what lost them the race. Meredith and Gretchen had the same problem. I watched that clip too.

Yeah, even Phil gets lost! That was fun to watch.

How is it you know that Hobbs? As bungling as the brothers can be, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me that they would spend hours there. They would be able to figure out in minutes that they were at the wrong place.

It's also true, is it not, that all the other teams were hours ahead of them to begin with?

According to the interview someone posted in another thread, the started out 8 minutes behind G&M, but spent a bunch of time at the "water tower", and then went 45 minutes in the wrong direction, which put them an extra hour and a half behind. When they got to the roadblock, they saw that all the clues had been taken and then saw that the other teams had completed the roadblocks.

On the Early Show this morning they stated that when they stopped to change clothes, they were hours behind the other teams.

They also said that they spent 35-40 minutes chasing the oats around the pen before they milked them. That shouldn't have taken much time.

21. "RE: The Brothers' problem"
I think their main problem was they were following the freshest set of tire tracks.

It wasn't shoved down our throats. Remember that at the beginning of the episode, the Bros mentioned talking to a bushman and learning "how to read tracks." Maybe it was a joke? I think that wherever they got the info, that is what they were doing.

Working on the erroneous assumption that the team ahead of them, which had produced the freshest tracks, was on the RIGHT track, the Bros followed and invested alot of time into investigating the water tower, rather than reading the clue for themselves thoroughly first. They only read the clue properly when it finally dawned on them that there wasn't a clue box on the tower, under the tower or in the general vicinity of the tower at all, and that maybe, just maybe, they'd missed something.

Had the Brothers not wasted all that time, I feel pretty sure they'd have been able to remain in the race. They started out only 10 minutes after Mere/Gretch.

I was wondering if the instructions said they had to use those straps on the bumper. Looked like many of those were small enough that the guys could have just tossed them to one side.

Maybe then I wouldn't have had to keep encouraging GIRon to hurry up.

another major concern I have is the fact they dont travel as much anymore =( I mean, theres been like 2 or 3 times this season where they stayed in the same country as they started off in >_< I feel this makes the race much more influenced by randomn luck factors like findig helpful locals to lead teams around, or the bad cab driver that screws a leg up for a team. take Rob And Amber for example:
In legs they changed countries - finish 3rd, 1st, 5th, 5th, and 2nd (Avg - 3.2) - one of the 2nd place finishes was a direct result of Lynn and Alex stopping to help Brian / Greg

In legs they stayed in the same country - 1st and 1st (Avg - 1)

I think everyone can agree that Rob and Amber have been insanely lucky during the race, and I contend that they arent nearly as great of races as everyone seems to think they are. these legs where they stay in the same country and just drive around heavily favor Rob and Amber, who recieve a significant amount of help from the local populace who reconize them. ;/

This has been argued ad nauseam and insanely lucky just doesn't cut it. Luck had NOTHING to do with their win last night. No one helped them. There is some luck and LOTS of skill.

yeah... so much skill went into last night =P
the only "skillfull" thing they had the choice of doing was carrying those things on their heads, and R/A backed out of that =P unless you count driving as a skill ;/
this episode was so overly simplified everyone pretty much stayed in their rut and made no significant progress (besides Uchenna and Joyce)
Sure Rob and Amber finished first, but they're like a minute (If that) ahead of Ron and Kelley. The only thing this leg accomplished was to knock off Brian and Greg.

I think that if the other teams asked for help, they'd get it too. In past seasons, a few teams had people actually guide them to places or hop into a team's car and navigate them from there. There have been instances where they didn't need to ask for help, as in the marketplace where they met the Survivor fan, but usually Rob will ask for assistance. Like when he got the police escort in South America (I forget which country) among other times.

People shouldn't be afraid to ask the natives to lead the way.

I agree. I'm not a Romber-fan, but I think their fame can be a hindrance instead of help at times, eg people stopping them for autographs and to talk to them. I think most people, when they see the production crew filming you and know that you're legitimately asking for help coz you're in a race, will be willing to help if you only ask. Heck, if even evil Jonathon can get help from locals, I'm sure ANY one of us can do the same if we're just willing to smile and chat. It's not hard to ask for help, and most people who get on the show aren't shy (otherwise they'd be boring to watch), making it easier for them to go up and talk to total strangers (compared to someone who's painfully shy, I mean).

LAST EDITED ON 04-11-05 AT 01:22 PM (EST)

I personally wish they give clues about where they are suppose to go and have the teams figure it out themselves rather than being told to go from Point A to Point B.

For example, a clue can be: Find your way to Jagiellonian University where the late Pope Paul John II studied and find the marker for your next clue. At least that way they teams' have to figure out they have to get to Krakow, rather than a clue telling them to go to Krakow.

Or: Go to the site of the world's tallest building for your next clue.

And so on and so forth. I do find the whole hand holding way of getting around rather tedious though. Of course it could be disastrous if temas guessed wrong and end up with several teams going off to wrong cities. But it would make for good drama.

The way they follow each other I would bet one or two teams would go to the right place and the rest would end up on the other side of the world as one person says he/she knows where they need to go.
