"AI Rumor!" |
My co-workers and I are constantly talking about AI and some have sworn that AI contestants are required to sign lifetime contracts once they make it past the first auditions just in the case that they win AI. However, those that claim this is true cannot reference where they heard it! Can anyone confirm this rumor?

I don't know where the original contract is posted, but it is discussed and large portions are included in this Salon.com article.

Some of the contestants aren't even 18 yet. How can a contract like that be enforced, say, if Diana were to win? (By the way, I'm rooting for Diana. Am I the only one?)

I'm rooting for Diana too. She'll need some good luck and some really exceptional performances over the next few weeks - but I think she can do it. She's only 16 so yea, I doubt she could legally sign anything that would tie her up for the rest of her life.Although, I have to admit Kelly and Ruben do seem to still only be associated and remembered for AI. Maybe they just have to sell their Soul to the devil er Simon to win.

Not sure about this rumor, but I do know a lifetime contract *does* exist over on OT. I believe we sign something from Landru...

I don't really think that it's legal to sign someone to a lifetime contract in such a situation. Isn't that what Bette Davis went to court about a long, long time ago? No more than 7 years, or else it's considered slavery or servitude.Contracts can be renegotiated, also. Which I hope the AI winners do asap, as the original contracts they sign are not the most advantageous to them. Yes, Diana can sign a contract. Her parent(s) or guardian needs cover her signature for her, though.

Like I mentioned in the "Is this a reality show" thread, John S was on David Letterman last night and Dave kept trying to get John to sing a note or two (must have asked him half a dozen times, you know Dave). But John just kept sheepishly grinning and said he couldn't. Dave finally asked him why and John replied, "Well it has something to do with the guy over there making this gesture" (makes the throat-slashing gesture). So apparantly they have have exclusitivity (sp, yeah I know) clauses in their contracts where they are resticted from "performing". They can give interviews but can't sing. Dave did mention that after John finished his AI tour that he would like to have him back so he can actually sing. So they might only be tied up until after the tour. Or Dave was just giving him a hard time again.

Well Dave didn't want him to sing because he thought he (or we) would enjoy it, he was just messing with him, in fact that was pretty much the entire interview. But it was obvious they had been told beforehand that John would NOT "perform" (is that a better term than sing?). And if Dave can embarrass a shy 16 YO he will.

13. "Lifetime IN CONNECTION WITH THE SHOW" |
The contestants are not required to sign lifetime contracts with 19. However, 19 retains the rights to their performances on the show forever ... just as Ed Sullivan retained the rights to the Beatles' performances on the Ed Sullivan Show. If there is a 25th anniversary Idol show, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and the others have no grounds to object to the show including their on-show performances. The contestants ARE required to sign recording and management contracts with 19 at 19's option, except for the winner, who "wins" such a contract. These are standard contracts, not lifetime ones; the conflict comes from the fact that 19 owns all your rights, from A&R to merchandising. I think they're five-year deals, although 19 retains an annual option to drop you like a hot potato (right, Justin?).
