"Top 7 April 17 East Coast Spoiler Thread" |
Please keep all sig-pic free discussion of tonight's Country Show on this thread until the West Coast finishes gagging or swooning over which idol decided to go after Haley's fans by performing half naked. Oh I would pay anything to watch Simon react to Sanjaya performing in one of Haley's skimpy outfits. Especially that one when he called her a "naughty thing". But I digress. As is usual, I will be late for the thread because I likely won't make it home from class in time, so anyone silly enough willing to host until I get back gets smooches in advance. Public Service Announcement: For those joing us for the first time tonight, or anyone who needs a review the Complete Guidelines for the board can be found at this link either here or in the fine print at the top of the page.

Here is a link to the song spoiler thread:http://community.realitytvworld.com/boards/DCForumID44/2291.shtml Read on another board that Blake may be singing another song than the one in the spoiler thread; also that Jordan was supposed to sing second this week. ------- New update: a poster on MJ's Big Blog now says that the original list is wrong (big surprise)...so sorry if that is true, it was fun to speculate for awhile. It will be interesting to see how many, if any, are correct.

Well, whatever the song selection, this season's group isn't up to the task of performing bonafide country songs. We may see some rearrangements, but I can't imagine they're going to shine as a group tonight. We might be treated with a near-stellar performance and a possibly a few good ones if we're lucky.I'm not a huge country fan, but I think I know good country when I hear it, and I'm not expecting a lot. We'll see!

I don't know, country isn't all that complicated, and there's such a wide range from twangy to country rock and country pop, it just seems there's something to suit everyone's voice. I'm thinking this could be a fairly pleasant show. Until, of course, Sanjaya dances the Achy Breaky or Boot Scootin' Boogie!

There's an actual reason he's on the show! And that reason -- believe it or not -- is because he can sing! Really, who saw that one coming? The judges said it all: he just found his niche. This may be his only good week and the effects of watching nine seasons of Dallas in one week will wear off eventually -- but let it be known: Phil has the heart of a country singer. Eventually, he'll have to give it back.

I wonder if country music is what Phil will try after AI S6 is over.---- Phil goes out to the audience and to the judges, song is ok, and he is wearing a black shirt with silver stripes and black pants. Judges: Randy who would have thought...you could have a career in country...who knew....I didn't even know Paula...this genre seems like it is most comfortable for you...you sound good from the beginning to the end! Simon....it has only taken ten weeks, Phil, I agree with the others, only time I have heard you in a long, long time --it was a good song, good style of music for you and you showed some personality. ---- Phil says it is his genre and what he wants to do.

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-07 AT 08:12 PM (EST)Jodin is second; song is "Broken Wing".... Simon reads from AI script for the top 7 show and tells Jordin (in extreme pimpage) that for the first time since they met where he actually believes based on that performance that she could win AI. And since she sang second....we are on track for the rumor that said she will sing "I will always love you" next week in the pimp spot on the big Idol extravaganza show. --------- She did sound like Kelly C at the end of the song, though, so good job, Jordin.

To me, it felt like there was something a little off in her performance. Dissynched. For the first half of the song, her face didn't match her voice. It was like she was emotionally distancing herself from the lyrics. If I'd gotten that on pure audio, it would be a great effort -- but that lack of connection in the visuals threw it off.

Here is some very interesting info on our Sanji Courtesy of The AP Conspiracy theoryIt's a solid lead. Dave Della Terza founded votefortheworst.com in 2004. He proudly claims Malakar as his candidate this year. Besides being awkward and odd, "he seems like he's embracing that he's the worst _ ponyhawked, screaming and acting crazy," said Della Terza (Age: 24. City: Chicago). Chanteuses like Melinda Doolittle and LaKisha Jones are as predictably smooth as 12-year-old scotch. So Malakar is "helping to liven up a really boring season," he said. Della Terza is having fun. But "Idol" viewer Sharon Mosher of Elmira, N.Y., is suffering. She thinks the show will, too, if Malakar bests Doolittle, Jones or the talented Jordin Sparks. "It would not be fair to some of those really wonderful girl singers if Sanjaya won," Mosher said. "I really think it would be the death knell of the show." Delta

Jesus doesn't have a driver's license. And I'm pretty sure the word 'wheel' isn't supposed to take up forty percent of the song.Agree with Randy: she just turned that into a gospel song. Wrong week, wrong style. It's not a bad performance, but it's not country.

Brown wrap dress with fringy cap sleeves. Gold high heel boots.Randy: Crowd won't stop. Had some pitch problems at the beginning. Wasn't my favorite. Could have made it more gospel Paula: I'm going to have to agree with Randy. I believe with the swell of the band you may have heard differently and you were shouting (I thought she was shouting.) Simon: IT is like eating a hamburger for breakfast. They didn't go well together. It didn't hold the Lakisha treatment. I'm going to tell you that you absolutely blew us away a few weeks ago. Light shirt over a dark grey tshirt with dark jeans. The first part was really nasal for me. Randy: What is funny, you sang it ok but it was nasally and some pitch problems, I just didn't get the emotion, I was lost. Paula. The joy and the love that you have on stage didn't come through. Simon: I think sometimes this audience and me are hearing different things. I heard a very nondescript nasally tinny vocal that had no impact. It was completely and utterly insignificant. Oh Chris says he INTENDED to sing nasally, I guess all the other weeks were just flukes?

Chris is FROM Virginia, a-hole, and I'm sure he had some friends who went there. It's not like he was just trying to get sympathy votes or whatever. I've never really had a problem with Simon before (this is my first season watching, after all) but that was so low class and uncalled for. LOVE how he tried to make up for it after Blake sang. From the sound of Simon's comments, he seemed to be already aware of the impact of the event on Chris, even before airtime. It seemed to me, too, that Simon was rude, and it was clear he (heartlessly or not) didn't want too much mention of it (i.e. as a distraction on the show.

I haven't taped the show, so I'm only going from impressions. It was the way he waved it off as a weird week right for Chris at the end of his comments. I'm not sure he said 'week' (or the exact word), but I got the impression that he was aware of it (the impact on Chris) over a period of time prior to the show's airing. I could be incorrect about this as I may not have heard it clearly.

That was all the comments that Simon had for Chris. Then Melinda sang. Then Blake sang. Simon gave his comments for Blake's performance and then said:"I thought it was ok... Um. I would like to say on a more serious note just to pick up on what Ryan said on behalf of the 3 of us, that we would also like to offer our best wishes and support to the... um, to the families of this tragedy as well. And uh, it's been a tricky week for you guys, but, um, it was ok." Call me cynical, but I feel that Simon only said these things because someone (some producer or whatever) told him what a ##### he looked like rolling his eyes at Chris's speech.

Yup, you're right, I was referring to Simon's comments that came after Blake's performance, not Chris'. I initially misread the earlier post and I thought we were commenting about the same comments by Simon, and it turns out there was more, which you transcribed. Simon was in quite a mood this episode, in sort of battle of wits with the audience. We can only thank Phil for getting the show off to a reasonably good start, which seemed to temper Simon a bit. You're 100% right, Silver...Simon rolled his eyes like Chris was only giving his little shout-out in order to garner some sympathy votes (which hey, maybe he was on some level, but damn, that eye-rolling was cold).Pretty weak, transparent attempt at damage control by Simon, to then interrupt his own subsequent commentary after Blake's song, to try to salvage his dignity after being caught in such a boorish gesture. Clearly, one of the producers got on the horn and said, "Hey Idiot, you just cruelly dismissed the pain of the grieving nation that lines your pocket with million dollar bills." Not a classy move--maybe he doesn't have the "heart of gold" we sometimes optimistically (naively?) credit him with. On the other hand, maybe he was still just reacting to CR's pathetic "I sound like a nasally sheep on purpose" argument in the same way everyone else was....could just be a case of bad timing. But that's just the kind of faux pas that loves to rocket its way through the blogosphere.....stay tuned?

LAST EDITED ON 04-18-07 AT 10:01 AM (EST)LAST EDITED ON 04-18-07 AT 08:11 AM (EST) I disagree. I think Simon was counting on Chris's wiping out this week and then the VT comments come...which would garner some sympathy. The more I have thought about it the more it bugs me--Simon said "best wishes" as part of his closing comment and in America we say best wishes at a wedding but after something like VT? I agree with those who suggest it was a hurried attempt to put right whatever impression people had from his earlier eye roll. If there are any Brits posting I would love to know if people in Britain say best wishes at a funeral service or the visiting hours. A country is mourning; G Bush, who could not find New Orleans after hurricane Katrina (for days, well, eventually he remembered where it was), even went to the convocation one day after the horrendous event. Is Simon that insulated? (suppressing all kinds of snide remarks right now) ETA: (the suppressed snide comments are about Simon) and to fix spelling.

I'm thinking that yes he IS that insulated. The horror is real for me because I read the detailed news stories, I vicariously lived the nightmare. To him it's probabably just a headline, like something that happened in Iraq or something. Oh yeah, people dead. well that happens doesn't it. Underneath his snarky facade yes he has a heart, and he's a swell guy in person and all that. But I think he's clearly insulated himself from "real" life, including anything that could threaten his own delicate sense of personal security. Money, the latest business success, his next cutting remark -- so much easier than really contemplating all the Big Questions, you know? We all do it, but he seems to have a PhD in it. So Chris tearing up over the fragility of life was just irritating.

wow. even though I was ready for it, and looking for it, it somehow was worse than I expected. eye-roll doesn't quite cover it. it was really searing, in an icy way. and he looked soooooo uncomfortable when he made his forced little speech in the middle of his comments to Blake. so obvious. I'd love to know who said what to him, and during which of those two commercial breaks. I'm betting the second, he seemed pretty mellow during his comments to Melinda. I hear there were a lot of comments about it on the offical Web site, and they were killed out pretty fast.

White shirt, gray plaid sweater vest. Black pants, just a bit of stubble. He has a thing for the plaid doesn't our boy Blake. I don't know this song, but the softness in the falsetto is nice. Randy: I got a couple of things for you. I like the vest, you picked the right song and the arrangement suited you. You know who you are. Paula: You have the whole package. Pick the right song, choreography Simon: Wasn't a jumping out of my chair performance. It was a wise thing not to go down a route that doesn't suit you. Congrats, Blake, you got the pimp spot--even if it was country night--and you got if before Taylor got one last year.I feel like the band overpowers him some of the time--especially at the end. Did you all catch Simon whipping his neck around to look at the fans as they cheered for Blake? Simon cuts short his Blake comments to add his condolences for VT (from the all the judges) saying it was a tricky week for the contestants. Maybe now he is thinking of the impact on Chris R-- he is from Va, right?

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-07 AT 08:56 PM (EST)Yeah, I pretty much agree -- although I think it's going to be Lakisha, not Blake, in the bottom 3. It's interesting -- 3 people performed really well (I'd put Jordin first, along with Melinda and Phil); 2 were mediocre (Blake and Lakisha); and 2 simply reeked (Sanjaya and Chris R.). I don't usually think of "country week" as a key talent separator, but it surely looked that way tonight.

I think you're right about Lakisha. The other two women sang so much better than she did. Meanwhile, none of the guys hit it out of the park. Phil sang well enough to energize his fan base, and Blake has been doing so well so far that he should be all right. My rankings were solely on performance merit. As long as the top 2 are safe, then that's fine by me.

I had Lakisha and Blake switched on my list. Melinda was awesome again. In a weird way she reminds me of a Janet Jackson type performer. What I mean is - she has 2 very different personalities when on stage and when off. Janet has always been very quiet and unassuming during interviews, acceptance speeches and the like. But when performing, she's like a totally different person. I get that from Melinda. Jordan - Thought she did a fantastic job. I am a Martina fan and she nailed it. Phil - Have not been a Phil fan at all. Gotta give him props, that was his best performance by a mile. Blake - I thought it was the perfect song choice until he sang it. Was dissappointed. Lakisha - Again I initially thought good choice. Again dissapointed. Agree that she just wasn't with the music and just yelled the chorus. Expected much better from her. Chris - Dude, nasally may be a form of singing, but if you are told repeatedly that you were nasally and not as a compliment, you might want to re-evaluate the decision to sing that way on purpose. Sanjaya - Not awful, but still not good either.
