"The Great American Songbook... Take Your Picks" |
Next week's theme is Rod Stewart's album, "The Great American Songbook". I took the liberty of looking for the songs that the compilation included and here they are:Disk 1: It Had To Be You 1. You Go To My Head 2. They Can't Take That Away From Me 3. The Way You Look Tonight 4. It Had to Be You 5. That Old Feeling 6. These Foolish Things 7. The Very Thought of You 8. Moonglow 9. I'll Be Seeing You 10. Everytime We Say Goodbye 11. The Nearness of You 12. For All We Know 13. We'll Be Together Again 14. That's All Disk 2: As Time Goes By... 1. Time After Time 2. I’m In The Mood For Love 3. Don’t Get Around Much Anymore 4. Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered 5. 'Till There Was You 6. Until The Real Thing Comes Along 7. Where Or When 8. Smile 9. My Heart Stood Still 10. Someone To Watch Over Me 11. As Time Goes By 12. I Only Have Eyes For You 13. Crazy She Calls Me (no, Yoda didn't sing this one) 14. Our Love Is Here To Stay Disk 3: Stardust 1. Embraceable You 2. For Sentimental Reasons 3. Blue Moon 4. What A Wonderful World 5. Stardust 6. Manhattan 7. S'Wonderful 8. Isn't It Romantic 9. I Can't Get Started 10. But Not For Me 11. Kiss To Build A Dream On 12. Baby, It's Cold Outside 13. Night And Day 14. A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square Disk 4: Thanks For The Memory 1. I've Got a Crush on You 2. I Wish You Love 3. You Send Me 4. Long Ago and Far Away 5. Makin' Whoopee 6. My One and Only Love 7. Taking a Chance on Love 8. My Funny Valentine 9. I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm 10. Nevertheless 11. Blue Skies 12. Let's Fall in Love 13. Thanks for the Memory Take your picks, guys and gals! Which songs do you want your favorites to sing? Can anyone top Constantine's performance of "My Funny Valentine"? (I can definitely hear Elliott doing that song). Or Diana deGarmo's "Someone To Watch Over Me" (I think Katharine could do well with that song).

Gee not a rocker in the bunch. Well, at least the ones I know. What will Chris sing? He could follow in Constantine's footsteps with Valentine. Too bad they aren't singing Rod's songs. Chris could go with "Do ya think I'm sexy". Then we'd all scream YES!!!!

I'm with you Zip -- Not a HUGE fan of his early stuff, but can't deny that there are some classics in his past... HOWEVER -- I have never liked his singing/caterwauling, and the sound of him croaking out those amazing standards makes my skin crawl, my teeth itch and my hair stand on end. Yucky. (plus, I can't get out of my head the "South Park" Stewart who only says "pooped my pants")(tee hee)

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-06 AT 10:09 PM (EST)I'm also with you Zip, he makes my skin crawl. I actually banned RS from my wedding. I knew my goofy relatives would try to bribe the DJ into playing he-who-must-not-be-named so I had it written into the contract that the DJ would not be paid if any RS was played. Turns out it was my MOTHER who tried to slip the DJ a $20. Still haven't forgiven her for that one. I am really conflicted about if I am able to see any of AI or the results show. Sorry Lasann, we agree on almost everything else. Yes It's Vintage Tribephyl!

Whew, I thought I was alone in my hatred for recent Rod. I didn't mind the early stuff, and honestly remember seeing the "video" for Hot Legs on TV (Don Kirshner's Rock Concert for those who remember) in the late 70's. My hatred and disgust has developed in recent years when he started killing classic songs. I enjoy most of the original or famous versions of the "great american songbook". I didn't need a lecherous drunk who sounds like he's singing through a mouth of scotch and rocks (and I don't mean ice). We already have Barry Manilow. Rod doesn't need to morph into the oversexed Barry. Bashing aside, I think this week should be good. These are songs that have been heard so much over the years, that it will be difficult to change them around. Everyone pretty much has to make it not sound karaoke. Oh, and I have a rule that if I hear Lynyrd Skynyrd while out, I leave. Sorta like banning them from my personal event.

I have three favorite contestants at this point, and i'll pick songs for them, because quite frankly i don't care about the others.Elliot - I think he's proven that these songs are strong points for him, so i think he'll pick the right song. He has many to choose from Taylor - the one that jumps out at me as a good choice for him is "What A Wonderful World". I'm thinknig back to Anwar last season, and can see Taylor doing a similar arrangement. I can also see him doing "Blue Moon" in a Ray Charles way, since i'm sure Ray Charles has recorded that song. Chris - I can see him singing "I'll Be Seeing You" to his wife. But what bothers me is i have this memory of some rock band doing "Blue Moon" and i have this horrible picture of him rocking out to that song....it would just be wrong. Maybe i'm just thinking of Elvis, who i know did "Blue Moon" geekboy

well shoot. I made this list last week, and now I already know that TWO of them must be wrong. (I picked a correct song, but have the wrong person singing it!)But I won't cheat, dang it. lol. Kellie: Baby, It's Cold Outside Paris: Let's Fall in Love Katharine: It Had to Be You Ace: But Not for Me, or As Time Goes By Taylor: Our Love Is Here To Stay Elliott: What A Wonderful World but Chris? I checked out all 55 songs, and I honestly can't imagine him being anything but horrified by all of them. these seem to be least ridiculous, but they're funny too, for him: Chris: Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, or maybe Night and Day

I'm with Geekboy, I'm only going to guess for the people I care about.I'd like to hear Elliott do: My Heart Stood Still Stardust The Way You Look Tonight A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square I'd like to hear Taylor do: Don’t Get Around Much Anymore You Go To My Head They Can't Take That Away From Me Our Love Is Here To Stay (I agree with those that say "What a Wonderful World" would be fabulous, but a little predictable.) Ace will do well because there are many songs on that list that you can croon while makin with the puppy eyes. Paris -- hmmm, she's already shown that she's got a fair knowledge of standards....BUT, she's also shown that she can't sing softly. But she'll probably find something to belt. Katharine -- who cares. She'll pick something, sing it fine, wear an ugly dress, and put me to sleep. Chris -- Oy. He'll probably do a servicable job with something (he does have a good voice), but he'll probably look really uncomfortable & be boring...'cause I don't think you can alt rock these songs in one week. Kellie -- will probably suck this week. Her astoundingly thick accent (I don't have an accent! barf) will make her trip up -- and if she doesn't know any Stevie, she probably doesn't know any of these standards. Lordy I hope she REALLY sucks this week.

If it's the same "Time After Time" that Cyndi Lauper made popular in the 80s then maybe Chris will find a way to rock it. I think it's been remade a few times since the 80s by alternative bands. Not sure though. Time will tell.
