"Queen week is coming April 11-get your earplugs out now!" |
Just saw this on the official Idol site:"Then, on Tuesday, April 11th, the Top 8 Contestants will take on the music of the legendary Rock Band, QUEEN. Will someone be able to top Constantine's performance of Bohemian Rhapsody? Tune in to find out! Then, come back on Wednesday for a special hour episode, when the Top 8 will also perform a QUEEN song or medley!" In another thread I said ugh to country week, but I take that back. I'm now looking forward to country, but Queen? Is this a guaranteed disaster for most of the contestants? Chris will be ok, if Ace is still there (and I hope he's not) he might actually do ok with his little high falsetto self, but Kellie or Mandisa or Paris or Bucky singing Queen? PLEASE. GOD. NO!!!!!

I hope this is not an April fool's posting joke because as much as I love all types of music, when aked to name my favorite band, group, or single I always say Freddie Mercury, Brian May. Brian's guitar is as distinctive to hear in a song Willie Nelson, Slash, Bon Jovi, or Eddie Van Halen. It will be very interesting to see what choices are made. There are actually a lot of good Queen songs. The problem is that you always hear the same ones on the radio - Fat Bottomed Girls, We Are The Champions ..etc. The greatest challenge with them doing Queen songs would be that NOBODY can sing like Freddy. Freddy had the most awesome voice, God Bless him, he will always be missed. I have heard some things about Queen touring with Paul Rodgers, who is a great singer. Some of you might know him from Bad Company and with the group The Firm in the 80's with Jimmy Page. Obviously I think nobody could "replace" Freddy, but I think that would be a cool concert. Brian May is still as awesome as ever on guitar!

Okay, the producers have finally done it.The country and disco theme weeks are horrible enough. But I can sit through them simply because I can't possibly be so disgusted by any song butchering that I won't watch. Mainly because I pretty much hate both genres. But they've finally set something up that I will refuse to watch. Queen was one of my all-time favorite bands (notice I said "was." Paul Rogers is no Freddie Mercury and never will be). The only two that could possibly sing anything by Queen that wouldn't cause me to rip out my eardrums would be Chris and Taylor. And I even question that. But Kellie or Ace or Mandisa? Whoever thought this disaster up should be shot. Goddess of the Steeler Nation

So true. Queen is such a group production. I cannot understand who it is that produces this stuff. I thought the Stevie Wonder week sucked, too. His stuff is so particular to him, hard to sing, and just not suited to anyone but him. Why not a Journey week, a Bon Jovi week, or about anyone else?

LAST EDITED ON 04-07-06 AT 11:36 AM (EST)I don't think this is a disaster. I do think it will show that most of these peeps aren't that good at rock singing. What songs will we see? There are lots of Queen songs that would work with this pop-oriented Idol crowd. After remembering Constantine's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and, of course, "We Are the Champions" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," there's "Under Pressure" (one of my personal favorites, and a song that performs well), "You're My Best Friend," "Killer Queen," "Don't Stop Me Now," "Somebody to Love," "Save Me," etc. More than enough songs for each of the eight to come up with something appropriate. But they won't be able to pull off Freddie Mercury's dramatic vocalizations (e.g., "Another One Rides the Bus," "We Will Rock You") or the changes of pace (e.g., "Bicycle Race"), and I hope they won't try. And I don't think either the song or the subject matter of Brian May's bad joke "Fat-Bottomed Girls" (which really hurt Queen's Top 40 career, BTW) is appropriate for Idol, so despite all the jokes in this thread, it won't be there.

I don't like Rodgers' rendition of anything I heard but Brian May and everyone else was incredible. I hope the idols do better than Paul Rodgers. I hope nobody does "We will rock you" or "We are the champions". That would bore me. Maybe Taylor will do "Fat bottom girls" as homage to a recently eliminated contestant...

LAST EDITED ON 04-03-06 AT 11:30 AM (EST)First of all, I absolutely love Queen's music. Secondly, WOW, those producers are getting meaner. This is clearly calculated to be really rough on them. This will probably make “Stevie Wonder Week” look like “Sing Happy Birthday Week”. Freddie Mercury had an enormous range, and a TON of skill (not to mention huge talent). Queen’s songs reflect that with sophisticated melodies, layered harmonies, full orchestrations. I actually think the girls may do better than most of the guys because of Mercury's range -- he was such a high tenor that most women with a decent mezzo range can pull it off without transposing too far out of whack. (Journey songs are like that too – Steve Perry is a castrato. Pass it on.) Ace will suck - crappy falsetto is not a replacement for a big, facile, high-tenor range. Paris will sing something slutty while dressed like Carmen Miranda Katherine – eh…who cares. She’ll find something and sing it fairly well, but it won’t be exciting – except for her really horrible dress Mandisa – Would kick arse on “Somebody To Love” or “Save Me” Elliot – “Killer Queen”? He’s got Freddie’s facility, he’s good with intricate melodies – and he’s got a decent range (though it's lower than Freddie's), so I’m sure he’ll find something. For these guys, song choice will be critical, and difficult. Chris – *sigh* Yes, I think he’s talented. No, I just don’t give a crap anymore. Yawn. Go open for Creed. Taylor – Yes, he’s a tenor, but a very different kind of tenor. Maybe “You’re My Best Friend” Bucky….ooh. Bucky is just going to have a hard week. How about “We Will Rock You”? NOBODY, but NOBODY should do: Another One Bites the Dust We are the Champions Bohemian Rhapsody (nobody CAN sing this, so nobody SHOULD sing this (including Susie & Constantine) (ETF spelling) (And to say that I just realized I forgot Kellie. Oops. Needless to say, she will suck more than Ace.)

well, Randy and Paula make a big deal about making songs "your own" and not just doing a poor imitation of the original. that's way too musically deep for Simon to contemplate.so with Queen they obviously all will have to do that, for whatever its worth. which isn't really about how good THEY are at changing the arrangements, unfortunately. I imagine it's the Idol image-makers and musicians who will be responsible for any tweaks. i mean, you can't expect a kid like Paris to know as much about changing up arrangements as someone like Taylor who's been playing live gigs for 10 years. So it's not at all an even playing field. (and yeah, I heard all those snorts, thanks.)

Simon usually calls it a lot closer than either Paula or Randy when someone makes a song their own. That being said, Queen was so much more popular in the European countries than in the US (unfortunate for us) so I expect Simon to judge even more critically if one of the idols butcher a Queen song. Making the song good without trying to mimic Freddie Mercury (because no one - no one could ever sound as good as him) will challenge each of them. Can't wait. Love Queen. Hope Brian May makes an appearance but that is probably too much to hope for.

How could they possibly sing Prophet's Song and give it any justice at all? First the song is very long, and then with all the change ups and operatic parts, it would be a total mess.I want to hear someone sing "I'm in love with my Car" Sigs by Cyg

>Just saw this on the official >Idol site: > >"Then, on Tuesday, April 11th, the >Top 8 Contestants will take >on the music of the >legendary Rock Band, QUEEN. Will >someone be able to top >Constantine's performance of Bohemian Rhapsody? >Tune in to find out! >Then, come back on Wednesday >for a special hour episode, >when the Top 8 will >also perform a QUEEN song >or medley!" > >In another thread I said ugh >to country week, but I >take that back. I'm >now looking forward to country, >but Queen? Is this >a guaranteed disaster for most >of the contestants? > >Chris will be ok, if Ace >is still there (and I >hope he's not) he might >actually do ok with his >little high falsetto self, but >Kellie or Mandisa or Paris >or Bucky singing Queen? >PLEASE. GOD. NO!!!!! > > ITA I don't believe any of them can pull through doing ANY of QUEEN'S music other than Chris. I can almost bet he comes out on top next week with this. I hope he picks something besides 'We Are The Champions, Or Another One Bite's The Dust'..<sighs>

I just hope he doesn't do Stone Cold Crazy --- I love that song and it's right up his alley, but that's exactly why he shouldn't do it.I would like to hear Chris sing Keep Yourself Alive or Fat Bottomed Girls.

Chris would make a terrible mistake trying to sing WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS as they all would. First it would be predictable, then it would be horrible. The Kat and Paris could hit the notes but no ROCK in there Blood. and none of the guys could hit the notes to give it justice. jags

Lifted this off the idolonfox boards. check out: http://hollywoodrecords.go.com/queen/americanidol/It states: You saw your favorite Idols perform these classic Queen hits, now own the original Queen songs that inspired American Idol Queen week. and lists tracks: Tie Your Mother Down Fat Bottomed Girls Another One Bites The Dust Crazy Little Thing Called Love We Will Rock You We Are The Champions Radio Ga Ga Bohemian Rhapsody The Show Must Go On These Are The Days Of Our Lives I Want It All Stone Cold Crazy Bonus tracks All Right Now Can’t Get Enough Kind of looks like 8 of those are the songs for next week. I guess we'll see.

People get down on Paul Rodgers because he is not Freddy. Well, I agree Freddy was in a class of his own and there will never be another singer like him. That being said (ahh-Simonism), Paul Rodgers is an awesome singer. I think if he is on AI next week with Queen, his influence will be a good one. He has had success fronting rock bands (ie: The Firm), and also singing slower more ballad type songs (ie: some of the Bad Company songs). His versatility is a good example for all singers. Chris especially comes to mind because I think he has similar ability to have success with a wide range of song styles.

Just adding to this. I have another idea. Chris, is the only one who can come close to even thinkably pulling this off in a respectable manner.Save us the agony, PLEASE!! Why don't we let Chris, sing all eight songs this week, skip the other contestants and have everyone call in a pick there favorite song. This makes more since to me. Queen is one of my all time favorite groups.I hate the thought of anybody trying to sing like Fredie Mercury and not destroying the song and their career at the same time. Also, queen without Fredie is not even the same group that I remember so long ago. Paul Rogers isn't Fredie and that's what I miss more then anything.

geez, NOW you tell me. lol.the other night I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying make a prediction list of Queen songs for that crew. (for a thread on another board.) it was a #####, yes it was. this confirms my thoughts that night. it just makes no sense of make them all do that! it's just so random.

Ooo, I agree.Simon's a Brit. Brits look at Queen, especially Freddie, as some kind of almost deity. This does not bode well, not well at all. Well, at least not for the contestants. I, for one, plan to laugh my azz off for at least one hour tonight. I planned to highly entertained, in a William Hung kind of way. Goddess of the Steeler Nation

I enjoyed seeing the contestants play with the band. You could tell who the band was impressed with and who they were not. They had good things to say about Bucky and Chris. They liked Kellie, but I think in a sympathetic kind of way because of her youth and personality. They also really seemed to like Paris. You could tell that they did not like what Ace wanted to do with their song. I don't blame them because I thought he did totally bomb it! Ace is probably what they were afraid of when they agreed to do the show! With exception of Elliot and Bucky, I think the perfomances were overall disappointing. I didn't care for most of their song choices, or they way they were sung for that matter.
