"Can looks be deceiving?"
LAST EDITED ON 03-04-06 AT 06:10 AM (EST)

Hello there everybody!
It's been a while since I posted, I've been watching the Olympics so I'm a little behind on the American Idol front.
Anyways, I had a friend tape the episodes for me, and when I finally got down to watching them, the first thing that hit me was how good looking most of the contestants are this season.
Ace, David, and Will all have looks that apeal to the teenage demographic, Taylor will win over the older folks, and then theres the rockers image played by Chris. On the girls side I'm not familiar with names but alot of them wouldn't seem out of place on a runway. So my question is, when the judges pick the top 24 do you think they take appearances into account? Because in my opinion, it seems as though many of the singers do not have amazing vocals, but rather a little of everything that will make them commercially marketable. I know some people will vote solely on vocals, but there are others who go for "eye-candy". So Is this a fair representation of talent? I mean did Patrick Hall deserve to be voted off, while those who had less talent but high appeal stayed. In the end, is this just another high school popularity contest?

Oh also did anybody think Carrie Underwood looked a bit different last night?

Well because America votes it is absolutely part popularity contest. Although that isn't any different than the music industry as a whole. Plenty of people who look hot make it mostly on their looks alone and not because they got great voices.

I do think they take the whole package into account. It is a combination of looks, personality, ability to perform and voice. It is that "likeability factor". That doesn't have to deal just with looks, personality is a big part of it as well.

There is more to the performance than just the voice. Do they stand there like a dead fish that happens to have a great voice, or do they bring their passion and personality to the performance. Do they look like they are sincere in what they present, or is it just some put on for show.

A great voice will get you through if you don't have looks or personality. If you look good or have a personality that really shows up on stage that can make up for having a weaker voice.

I agree. I think the judges are really trying to search for a total package... I mean I think that's what I'd want as a fan... someone with a great voice who's great to look at. I really think that Lisa Tucker and Katherine McPhee embody that ideal for the women. I think it will come down to those two. Ace on the guy side is great but Lisa and Katherine are untouchable.

ya they do. Simon says it over and over again. Kelly Clarkson was no 10 but her vocals carried her. Ruben was more on personality. Fantasia was vocals and personality. Carrie was just on looks IMO. Ace is overrated IMO.

It's funny how people see things differently. IMO Carrie had vocals and looks but no personality. I love how some on this board nicknamed her "Carrie-Bot" because it was so spot on accurate. Very robotical stage presence.

She had a ton of makeup on, and also she did look thinner to me. She probably has "people" that advise her on her image now.

Carrie did look crazy. I think Hollywood and the entertainment machine has a tendency to screw with young stars. She's definitely become a victim of that secret little monster. Remember Lindsey Lohan two years ago? She was a hot little number with a big personality. Now she's a scrawny little drug attic who looks like she's in need of a couple of sandwiches with extra cheese. So sad. Poor little Carrie.
