"Is American Idol homphobic?" |
I never watched American Idol, but then I heard all this talk about the show being against gay guys with Simon and Randy being anti-gay. But then I read this article http://www.afterelton.com/TV/2006/2/idol.html and it made me think maybe not. Any thoughts?

Perhaps you should watch and draw your own conclusions about American Idol, as opposed to reading articles, and asking on an Internet forum?geekboy

I'll say that I certainly wish they wouldn't make thinly veiled comments about some contestants' supposed sexuality. (ok, 'not-at-all-veiled' comments.)And, they've received complaints from GLAD over the years for the...less than funny cracks between Seacrest & Simon re: sexuality. (I wish they'd stop that too.) However, their comments to/about contestants are typically in the city rounds, and typically to some pretty outrageous people. Once they get to final 24/12, they mostly pick on each other about homosexuality. And they don't hesitate to make negative comments about other aspects of contestants either. (Like weight, style, etc.) Sooo, I don't really think they're homophobic, just tasteless. Are they sometimes immaturely cruel? Yes, definitely. But institutionally homophobic? I doubt it.

So Simon and Ryan exchange jokes about their sexuality. So what? Our world is becoming way too politically correct. What's wrong with two guys joking about their sexuality? For me, i find it funny. But no, the show is definately NOT homophobic. geekboy

>>So Simon and Ryan exchange jokes about their sexuality. So what?<<The issue is using homosexuality as an insult. Inferring that anyone who is gay is insultable -- less of a person. While I agree that political correctness in general is way overdone, and I long for the days when we can all laugh at ourselves and each other without being accused of being bigots... I still gotta agree with GLAD that it's not a good idea now, today, to perpetuate that particular brand of humor. I'm NOT suggesting that we should NEVER make jokes...please make jokes. I'm not even suggesting we should never make GAY jokes. However, nowadays the word "gay" is thrown out sooooo very casually as a synonym for "bad" -- it's not a good thing, and that's what folks have an issue with AI about. Especially with the young audience AI has. As I said above, I don't believe that they are fundamentally bigoted or homophobic, but they do perpetuate a problem attitude.

But no, the show is definately NOT homophobic.I guess you should say that this isn't homophobic IN YOUR EYES! I don't like others making that decision for me. I also don't like others making fun of or making light of a lifestyle that I have to live daily. To hear these idiots make fun of and smartass remarks as to what is deemed "gay" (in their eyes) is truly pathetic to me. I won't call the show homophobic but it doesn't set well with me sometimes.

I think the gay-themed "banter" between Simon and Seacrust was homophobic. The show, in general, is not.
Otherwise, Clay would never have done so well (oh wait -- he's *wink* straight, isn't he?).

So is this the wrong thread to mention the American Idol slash community on Livejournal? Coconut: Taking love triangles involving Ryan, Simon, and Constantine to a whole new level.
