"Leaving Idol early = the death of the show?" |
I was discussing this the other day. If Mario gets out of his contract, who is to say Idol contestants in the top 12 in future years drop out and sign contracts with other music companies. I do think Idol has a case because of the exposure, but I would think a music company would simply pay that money in a settlement. This is a calculated risk, as the music comapny better be making their money's worth. But if Clay's proven anything, its that Idol contestants are viable investments. So, if this becomes a pattern in future years, will the best in the competition leaves early, giving us mediocore talent in the competition? Or maybe just one strong contestant and a bunch of medicore comepetition, as the better contestants leave earlier, knowing they won't win and will have to wait to relaese their record? Thoughts...

I think what needs to play out is what actually happens to Mario. That is the unknown factor here, will there be a backlash against him, or will the fans follow?Alternatively, i think this may force AI to revise the brutal contracts that the contestants sign, and bring the contracts to a level that is competitive with non-AI contracts. a 50% take is a bit harsh, but the fact remains that the contestants agree to that. Leaving the show after the exposure just to avoid the contract is very unprofessional, and Mario is taking a risk, but watching how this falls out will be interesting. I don't believe it will hurt AI, but it may force some changes, be they better or worse for future contestants. geekboy

All they have to do is add a provision to the show contract stating that if they make the final 12 (or even 32) and drop out, they'd owe Simon Fuller their first born child and the family homestead, or the monetary equivalent anyway.Would kind of discourage pulling a Mario, no?

I don't think Top 12 contestants leaving AI for their own record contracts or personal gain will be a big problem. Fantasia won AI and I've never even seen her since the show - if she would have left early it would have been a bad move on her part. Diana DeGarmo and Clay are good examples of how staying with the show is a good idea. People will forget about Mario in time. In the end, those of us that walk away winning, win more than just a loss - Audrey, Apprentice loser

Mario was an idiot. He now has a reputation as a sell out. He was tempted by some google searches and some informal polls that said he was popular. He's toast without AI. He needed the rabid fans to build up his sales. Without that exposure, he's screwed. Who thinks Clay Aiken would have sold diddle without being seen week after week on AI? If he'd walked after being in the finals, he would have become another AI has been, just like Mario has. Miscellaneous Ramblings --I hated him and was glad to see him go. I thought he was cheesy and goofy and wouldn't have voted for him unless by some freak of chance he was up against Mikalah in the finals.
